I think I might try and make this a kit people can buy for next year. Would anyone want one?

For less support waste you could make the underside of the spiral as steps instead of a ramp, and make sure to only have another material for the interface layer.

5:47 for tiny holes like that, I find it easier to hear up a pin and melt through. Then you can use a drill bit to widen to the final size. I have far fewer splits or cracks that way

15:31 I'm not really an ASMR guy, but there is something soothing and familiar, about hearing your printers going in the background. While I i watch this and hear similar sounds from mine printing right now too. 😂

I would also paint the balls in different colors, or anodize them

Great idea! I was thinking maybe even a rubber coating over them to make it a little more quiet.

For those plastics that tend to crack when drilled, and without using heated pins, run the drill in reverse. The drill will deform the plastic instead of cutting and possibly catching at breakthrough. Happy new year!

10:37 I recently learned about changing the supports settings right under where you choose standard or tree. If you play around with those, you can get supports that come off a lot easier and cleaner. Like 'snug' option for traditional or 8 think it's 'slim' for tree? Was a game changer for me as I spent waaay too much time cleaning off the little scars from supports that bothered no one bit me, lol

If you have incandescent lights, you could try powering the motor off a light bulb connector like how animated ornaments used to do. You could run the wires into a bulb connector that fits into a removed bulb from a strand. LED trees probably wouldn’t be possible since they usually don’t have removable bulbs.

I've been hearing about these. Would be a cool way to do it, but would need some circuitry to run the DC motor off of the 110V AC. My LED ones do have removable bulbs as well, but I believe its still just AC in the wires

12:30 for super cheap, slightly larger small balls, can use BBs. Modern ones are steel with a coating over

actually, the singular tree branch is kind of cool as a christmas decoration mode. i can imagine mounting it on a wall, probably in a corner, which gives enough space to hang anything of interest from it (such as the marble machine bauble) and designates a spot to put gifts and such, without taking up space or becoming a centrepiece in a living area (which, call me a killjoy, i personally find a little obnoxious).

The best support material for PLA is PETG.
@SeanHodginsToo

I think that's what it is, but Bambu just calls it "PLA support" on the spool for some reason. Maybe its a little different. It came with the printers.

Love the behind the scenes and problem solving style of these types of videos! Also, was hard to tell from the first video, but from this one, I'm guessing you could use other motors? (I was having trouble sourcing the one you used without either having to pay a crazy premium)

(would love in these types of behind the scenes builds of you explain why you go with one thing over another option, if there's ever a time when you choose one over another for a particular reason other than just what you've got on hand. Like is stronger etc.)

Hey Sean, I have an idea that could make creating the spiral tree much easier for 3D printing, it may or may not require supports. Your project is amazing, and I can see the strong interest from your followers. If you're interested, I’d love to share my idea and discuss how we can work out an arrangement to make this happen. Let me know if you'd like to chat!
