Hey all, in today's video we install IPD's fuel pump upgrade kit in the Volvo 240. I highly recommend this kit for anyone anting a little extra oomph or especially if you plan to replace the pump anyways. The time and money spent are well worth it!

The fuel injectors have an over pressure relief unit. If the fuel pressure to the injectors is increased then the excess fuel is dumped back to the fuel tank.

Using the actual tool is better because you don’t risk damage and steel on steel (screwdriver) can cause a spark which will end in a bad day. For anyone not looking to buy the tool just make sure you use a brass drift instead of a screw driver

I bought the tool. I haven't done this yet but I'm getting ready to here soon. My pump is growling.

@@jasonsawyer123 after finding my 92 sending unit pretty well corroded, I decided to get the tool. a few days of deep creep and the tool worked well. for me i found I needed massive downward pressure and a few slight turns to get it moving a bit

just hold two large open end wrenches like a X, hook the ends on the ring and twist. No strange tooling req and no sparks, enough radius and leverage is the key

Pretty impressive results I didn’t think a new fuel pump would make it that much faster. Definitely need to do this sometime.

Mine didn’t come with instructions and I’m using a new part sending unit so that’s why I’m watching your video.

Hey Kid.... !!! You are far more braver than myself to work on any of the mechanics. I learned the "hard way" when I needed to replace the main fuel line in the engine, so "pain in the ass" is absolutely correct.... !!! Wait... Was that a dulcimer in the background... ???

Haha thanks! Not a dulcimer no, just a ukulele I haven’t touched in years ha..

I ended up removing the entire fuel delivery and return lines. The hard lines were rusted through so I went with some Dunlop and Continental rubber hose.

Hey Max- Well 5 months later it looks like my tank side hose clamp could not handle the pressure with how I torqued it. Pump spit off, and the ground side of the connector came unsoldered. After correcting the wiring, confirming the pump was still good, I went back for reinstall. Shockingly easier the second time around and with new seals to work with:). On my last attempt, I was thinking the unit would go in better with the fuel float in the up position. That seemed to be going OK until the last push where the lip forced the float out of the holder. (My replacement sending unit from IPD seems to be a bit shorter than the one that was in my 92. This time around I tried this method again, but used a long hose plyer to keep good tension on the float arm in the upright position. Once I was past the final mm of resitance, the float dropped right down without issue. As long as the float doesnt pop out (still have the old one rattling around in the tank!, this method seems to get the bottom of the unit and pump in easy with then just some attention needed when lowering the raised float so that it doest pop off on the last compression. Back in business!

Check relays, fuses and for spark… usually it’s the simple maintenance related things

can you explain how by changing the in-tank pump, which simply feeds the main pump has made the 240 go faster?
@max._jolley
@max._jolley Жыл бұрын
honestly no, I would have to read some more about it. I’m assuming the rear pump takes less load off of the main under the car pump due to it moving more fuel so it can work more efficiently. However, I can tell you the car is faster from driving it, and if you watched to the end you will see the car is faster than a 100% stock 240 and mine has no other performance mods. Thanks for watching!

Hey Max, just installed the upgraded pump with a new sender unit yesterday- I as well noticed a better wide open throttle response, While I have not yet sealed the hatch or put my wagon floor back in, I am finding that I can hear the rear pump running now while driving. Did you find that this upgrade pump is more audible while driving?
@max._jolley
@max._jolley Жыл бұрын
I have not noticed that no… maybe its the unsealed hatch. I also have a sedan so maybe that makes a difference since it’s not directly in the cabin
@420bmore7

@@max._jolley thanks for the confim. With the hatch sealed and floor in it is much quieter- thats idling with no fan or radio. Even with the fan on 1 i can then not hear it, nor when moving. cant wait to test some pulls later

Did you notice an improvement with the sound deadening material?
