+ Thanks to everyone who Clicked to see my vid + Well, this is something different.
Someone asked if I'd ever made an African Udu Drum or if i'd consider making one,to which I replied..uh,what's an Udu ?
But having seen some pictures on the web I thought I'd give it a go.
Don't know if it'll play as it might be a little thick but here it is.
My attempt at showing how to make an African Udu Drum.
Anyway, thanks to all who clicked,I hope to add some more videos shortly.

For anyone who wanted to know what clay to use, you can use any type of clay. Clay with sand or grog in it is a stronger hold and more durable. But can have a scratchy finish after you fire it. But if you get somthing without sand or grog like porcelain in comes out of the kiln smoother and probobly won't need glazing and has that nice white finish. But isn't as durable as clay with sand.

That tapping your wheel makes when you apply pressure for centering, I always turn it into a drum beat or pattern in my mind.

That was beautiful to watch! I thank you for making this video. I just made my first udu video with a simple groove. Now, I want to have a bigger one made for, or take a class and learn how to do this. The one you made looks beautiful. PLEASE, show us what happens next, and how much time went into making one of these. I thank you for your time. peace, Tim

I have two questions. 1) Do you wait until it's leather hard to "decorate" it? 2) What do you "paint" on the outside to decorate it? Is it just darker slip cause I know it's not glaze. Thanks so much for posting your videos though, I've watched a bunch of them as art research and I can't wait to throw again.

I'm a high school student, so I don't have much experience in the pottery world, so I have to wonder, what is the brown paint that you put on the pottery and what purpose does it serve? Can you safely glaze over it?

Is it possible to dry it without a kiln ? I want to make an udu but I do not have a kiln or access to one. Is it possible to do it with a home oven ?

Hi Dan, That is a very beautiful Udu Drum. I believe the size would make yours a base. You must give us a demo after firing :)

Dan I recently threw a couple Udu drums based on this video, thank you for the inspiration, but I have a question.. My first drum came out and had NO sound from the bottom.. Lots of lovely sound from the hole in the side but none from the bottom. When you fire your drum, do you low temp fire it or high temp? I am firing in an electric kiln to cone 6. No glaze, just colored slip. Kaz

Great Video again!. you were smart not on not doing it the long way like some other potters do ( they do half and half of the round shape on the wheel, and then glue it together) by the way what did you use to make the hole? I loved how you made the swirl design; you made it look like nothing. i'll give you a 5 on that one :)

Good day to you Dan I must also ask the same question as d3fjef, how many pounds of clay was that? I am looking at making one as a challenge in my pottery class.. Also how would you compare that stoneware clay to that of a porcelain clay? Kaz

@armydawg1292 I know that in order to do trimming it has to be at a leather hard stage, or close, but not too dry or it will just turn to powder. As for the slip I have no idea.. Good luck though(:

It depends on many things. If you find a stream, you can dig under the bank at the outside of a curve. That's where I've found it in my region (the Texas panhandle). There's a caveat, though. Clay of this kind is not pure, as it can contain a fair amount of impurities in the form miniscule remnants of decomposed vegetation. At the very least, you would need to knead the daylights out of it in order to achieve maximum consistency. I've seen many of my creations crack because of this. As charming as digging your own clay may seem, I recommend buying commercial clay as it has been properly refined and excellent consistency.

Ya know, I have been wanting a udu every since I saw one being played a few years ago. I also fool around with this ceramic/pottery thing and after watching this video, I don't like you very much. You make the throwing process look sooooo easy (this why I don't like you...lol). I want to make one but since I have a love/hate relationship with the wheel, it looks like hand building for me. As for the video, its great..... Thanks
