Making Tire Changer Machine

I always wanted to have my own tire changer, I was able to buy a lot of used parts for an affordable price and I undertook to make this machine. The machine can handle wheels from 6" to 20" in diameter, and motorcycle wheels.
When making the table, I modeled it on the original table, thanks to which I had no problem with matching the jaws and pneumatic cylinders. The table was twisted on screws because in the first attempt to make it, I welded the hub, which caused deformation of the table.

Very nice build. I used to change tires. One suggestion to make the upper arm easier to work with. Try using a compression spring through OD of the rod so when you release the knob and push it over, the rod will move up out of the way instead of dropping down or holding it to lock it again.

Was going to write exactly this. Every professional machine is equipped with a spring like that.

Yup. Bead unroller should lift up when released, not fall down onto the rim. Not a large a mood work to make the modification, but a huge improvement in usability. The bead breaker might want another look, too, to cater for different tyre sizes. They’re usually at a compound angle, rather than straight on, too, to help draw the tyre away and avoid the bead falling into the rim and causing damage to the sidewall

Attach a Metal file with JB-weld' to a strong old sawzall blade' then to attach to the sawzall _ 'and maybe that could be part of a helpful File system?!

Might add the air blaster for getting tire seated.... you got this far so its not even a challenge for you now. I have modified a few of these machines because of no mig welder or other nice welding tools. Even with all the stuff in front of me, the pattern is probably most important part of building one myself. I am seventy three so brain is slower than cold molasses. I started permanently in the southeast alaska islands right after coming home from nam in seventy. I was a diesel, gas, fab, welder, and not too bad of a story teller in those days. I did get my hands on a coats 40/40 tire machine that was rebuilt more times than letters in the alphabet. I then one day for no reason exception of boredom, make a larger one that handled the truck tires on "highway truck tires" but the off highway rims and tires were just manual labor intensive. Used a lot of starting fluid to seat tires back then. Of course the rule of thumb was bigger the easier applied most of the times. One weak link in yours is the foot controls will start leaking so needed to fix which meant removing the sides and fixing. I used a propane tank for air blaster to seat tires most of the times with most tires under the twenty four inch rim sizes. Just a simple all release of air in that tank would solve seating those tires to the rims. Teaching anyone how to determine the side up to mount and dismount. Lots of jokes about "are you from arkansas" were used on fellows who just didn't understand how dang easy its going to be if ya thought ahead. I best stop here as too long of comments are just that.... too long

An excellent build of a fairly complex but very useful garage machine. I'm impressed how your from scratch machining and fabrication capabilities have progressively evolved from almost nothing to what you have now with each build (or rebuild of used machines like the lathe) each adding more and more capabilities. Your design, fabrication, machining and welding skill improvement since you started has been impressive.

A curious question. Watching how your designs go together got me to wonder what kind of conceptual and dimensional design process you use. Do you just make draft sketches with dimensions and update those in the shop or do you use a cad program.

I would love to do something like this. I weld and have mill and lathe and all the tools required and I’m a mechanic. I always design stuff up in cad with the intention of making it but then I realize the steel it uses to make it costs more than just buying the machine from china. Chinese equipment is cheaper than the metal it’s made out of just can’t beat it.
