While I was in Yakushima, one of the southern islands of Japan, I stopped by a wood crafts shop to make my own pair of Yakusugi chopsticks. Yakusugi are special Japanese cedar trees native to Yakushima that are over a thousand years old. Cutting down Yakusugi is illegal, so all the wood used for crafts are sourced from naturally fallen trees.
The wood is split by hand, and each block is an imperfect shape, embodying the Japanese wabisabi aesthetic. The more wavy and twisted blocks are actually more expensive than the straight ones!

Note: They don't speak English, but during the class, the instructor will point to a book with English sentences written in it. There are two shops in Yakushima, each with morning and afternoon classes.
