This is our first episode from the road. I talked to HempWood founder and CEO Greg Wilson at his facility in Murray, Kentucky. They make a wood substitute from hemp fiber.

I love that the Hempwood team really created a sustainable and cyclical process but also even more impressive is how you guys created/invented several machines specifically for the manufacturing. The repurposing of tobacco trolleys and dryers... so smart. That's awesome. Really looking forward to watching your business and company grow. :)

When I was a kid, we lived in Missouri, on a farm just South East of KC. We had Hemp growing wild, all over the place. We couldn't get rid of it, no matter how hard we tried. Oh, and if someone really wanted to, they could have "turned us in" to the authorities for illegally growing something that is essentially a weed that grows naturally, on its own. Even then my mother knew that Hemp was a wonder plant and was upset that it had been relegated to the status it had been. I'm glad to see things have changed, its just too bad it had to come to this treatment in the first place.

With the shiplap systems coming back so strong, shiplap would be a great use for HEMP Planks. A great replacement for Sheetrock as it could be pre-stained or painted and be as fireproof and yet have more structural support for walls.

This may have been said/asked but... Since you had to invent/create/alter your own machinery, have you looked into Producing machinery for sale to Other processors? Im sure the hemp lumber industry is Growing and those potential producers will need YOUR Specialized equipment to process raw material into lumber as you have! Basically you "invented" a tool that everyone else will need to help get This industry TO REALLY GROW!! I FEEL THIS IS A WHOLE OTHER BUSINESS VENTURE FOR YALL! Since youve done the "legwork" of Literally Creating the machinery for this market... And that is Exactly what is needed for the market to grow! The tools and equipment "readily" available for expansion of hemp products like yours!!

I love the idea of processing the hemp fibre for wood. Could you do a part where you explain the process and let us see the pros and cons of the board that you produce. For example what sizes and how hard is it to use the end-grain or is it like compressed fibreboard?. Does it fur up and expand if it becomes wet? Can it be obtained in Australia yet? Also I agree that you need to set up a persona;l microphone. For those who aren't using American accents daily we miss a lot!

With the price of groceries, diesel, etc., going up very much every day, he world needs new ideas. This is one of them. Happy hunting in the business world.

This is cool. He kept swaying that they were burning their waste by they are actually making biochar. That is also really cool and carbon negative! I got a quote for a small floor from their sales person today. Seems to be about the the same price that Home Depot is charging for bamboo floor. Almost twice the cost of Home Depot oak flooring. But much cooler, I imagine that it would be a real conversation starter for visitors.

Been thinking about this for years now good to see. Can collect gas or oil from the burner? Also run a water pipe through run a steam generator? if your shed running on electricity that is, I'm assuming.Nice work, in the process I been wondering how to make different grades of wood (bit softer) depending on application. Use as studs/rafters? Personally I prefer the hemp blocks for building just in case someone wants to do something different how well do nails shoot in? Glue adhere? Waterproof/resistant?

If built high-rise grow room/s with a water tank on top you can design a practical powrrstation running water down hydro generator. Build FISHTANK nextdoor can fertilise recycle water system build ecosystem produce own electricity, use minimal water, Lil to no waste. Adding gassifiers generators wind generators if in vac system if have 1. Use less space land wise same output or more supply food chain to support system thenb can reclaim land for rainforest bush land use minimal water. Designed aptly should be able to use no extra water once it's designed steam water into environment every 6 months once it's. Filtered all the garbage out revitalised with nutrients then we have clean rain clouds not GARBAGE & round up etc etc... Aeroponics systems on levels just incase get a disease don't lose whole crop grow different strains. Been trying to lights that don't need wires as grow lights for supplement light. Much easier to grow harvest etc etc..

It’s not wonder why weed has been illegal on the federal level for so long. The potential to put multiple industries out of business altogether is crystal clear. I’m sure we could even create a bio diesel for fueling trucks, cars, and home heating purposes. The possibilities are endless.

Your factory needs some automation. You might be better off making a plywood type sheets insted of logs, then milling the panels into flooring strips like a plywood factory or mdf factory and how its made less manual labor more mechanical production. After wide boards are cut per order toung and grooves can be milled into the edges high speed someone could place an oder for 3k sf of 2.5" strip flooring And x length boards configured to the room size. Bailed down like any wood flooring is and you could also stain to order or tottaly do prefinised flooring. The sheet goods can also be toung and groove sheet goods for walls roofs and subfloor use, a coating could be applied like hubblers sip wall system and a foam insulation added, also pre built walls using engineered walls like the 2x4 and 2x6 type foam walls sold in Canada that use 1x and 2x stock with foam and rods. To create a break between inside and outside walls contact that cut down thermal heat transfer insted of wood rods hemp rods becuse hemp has a better insulation value and its fire proof and termite proof. This would be traditional wood type framing hemp is also used in block wall construction. It grows faster then wood uses less water controls weeds itself and takes almost no energy to produce. Like tabaco its a cash crop. The whole plant is usefull.
