With Engines like Unity, you can really polish a turd up with limited resources. But you got something completely wrong. To make a great game, you have to make something you would play by yourself. That way if it fails, who cares. You still get your game. Corporate Game development is recycled low risk garbage. Real designers should never care what the audience thinks until the product is done and delivered. Otherwise they are just rating their own imagination at the expense of your personal sanity. Better to just ignore them and finish YOUR game. Games should be Art. Not a business model. When you were on the playground and one kid was off playing a game by themselves, it never took long for other kids to join them and try it. That's what this industry is for. Showing the children in us, a new way to play. Everything else is meaningless.

Well your vision of things is nice but sadly if you want to live from making games you have no choice but to think about it from a business point of view. That's what he is discussing here, and what can really help you not to face financial troubles. In a utopic world I would love to make games as I want them without caring about the sales, but it's simply impossible unless you make a livin another way already.

@Hugo Fergusson successful is such a loaded word. The instant you consider your project a marketable product is the instant it stops being Art. And no amount of "success" can rectify that failure. Much like the music industry has killed music, the gaming industry is murdering gaming. Art and Industry are mutually exclusive. Attempts to blend the two are perversions of reality that should never be entertained. Games that aren't created first as Art are worthless except as a means to stifle any possible competition with convenience. Companies like Valve and EA exist to suppress the real artists in the gaming industry. Because allowing anyone else to enter the market lowers their stock value. And they cannot have that.
@aaronkaminski9138
@aaronkaminski9138 3 жыл бұрын
@Hugo Fergusson I was thinking about this today, sort of related to what you're saying, but it's sort of similar to the book industry. With books, there's two different kinds of fiction: Genre fiction and literary fiction. Genre fiction are usually the books most people have heard of that usually get turned into movies. Think anything by Stephen King or books like Percy Jackson/Harry Potter. Literary fiction is more like what you would read in school like something by Hemingway or Fitzgerald. It's kind of arbitrary, but in literary circles genre fiction is generally looked down upon when compared to literary just because the former caters to the largest possible audience while literary really doesn't. It's sort of the same when it comes to AAA games vs indie. People think AAA games are made just to make money, but that doesn't mean there's not some artistic value to it. Stephen King might dominate the NYT Best-sellers with every book, but that doesn't make him any less of an artist.

I can only agree with this video... I am learning about game development for 4 years now and in the beginning I started way to big projects. This projects were so hard to manage that I always had to give up on them... But now I am more experienced and know what I am capable off! Also I am constantly learning new things so all new games will be a bit better! Finally this year my first two games were released in the App Store and Google Play store!

For me number 1: Learn the basics and master them. Learn simple controls in multiple forms like either using Charactercontroller or Rigidbody in Unity. I made the basic controls and they are smooth and I understand them completely through time and redoing the code in different ways. Then the camera movement and mastering that, then the gun position, the gun mechanics, the gun swaying so on and so forth then we get to my number 2: Want a single new simple feature and work on how to make that from different sources. I got the gun, it works but now I want a swaying movement when moving the camera. So I focus on looking that up and learning how to do that until I got it down and then step 3: Learn more basics. So you got variables, methods, classes, for and if and know how they work but what about delegates? constructors? or animation in the engine? When you're done with these small features in your game take some time to learn other small pieces and basics for a little more advanced level like going from beginner on Unity to intermediate tutorials and features and once you have done that you can get into the REAL fun which is number 4: Take what you have and expand on it. So I made a gun and a weapon holder for switching them, they are in the same place always. I made this weapon swaying that makes the gun move from it's original position to another smoothly based on my direction given by the mouse. Why not combine them? I change the swaying script which I originally changed to rotate with quaternion instead of moving with vectors and make it move with vectors again. The Ray in my gun script gives a position where it hits, the object next to me always goes back next to me when I don't hold down the mouse button and the Lerp in the swaying script makes it go smoothly to a direction. So I changed the Ray's point to localPosition coordinates and used the Lerp to make a new kind of weapon that moves towards wherever i'm pointing. And then I can do whatever I want, I can make it pick up objects or enemies and throw them or punch. So I took two different basic features and combined them into something new. Same with the meelee. I made q enter meelee and I can either hit left mouse to attack or right mouse button to block which expand the possibilities which comes to the last which is number 5: Take the basic concept and expand in new ways. People who says you should keep it small are wrong. You take it as far as you can go. Start with the core basics and then you make whatever you can come up with. Don't just do a simple platformer, change it. Add new things and just experiment to what you find fun. Have the enemies spotting you jump and dive bomb you and deploy a growing tree plant while they jump away and go back to attacking you. There is so much you can do so don't limit to basic trash that everybody knows. That's not fun it's tedious and pandering, boring. I hate it. I want more interesting stuff. There are tons of tutorials on making an fps, I made a basic build perfectly and it took me a long time but it came out well so fi I can do it you can do it three times as fast and well cause I suck at thinking and programming after 2 years of studying it, although I was forced to go from awful Java lessons, HTMl, CSS and Javascript to C# right afterwards the next year. The basics to an fps or any game besides a 3d platformer is a piece of cake that anybody can do. So just do what everyone has done and then add more of what you can

It only takes a week to learn a programming language and maybe a few more to become really competent with it. You just have to get into a mindset where you're gonna learn the language. I usually learn programming languages by messing around in programs and looking up tutorials, trial and error, at least for me, is the best way to learn a programming language.

This is a great help, right now like really right now I am making models for a game I plan on making, had a few road blocks a few weeks ago for making a realistic game so I decided to make it stylized, I hope it goes well for me this time; as for what kind of game I am going to make and the scope of it I am still struggling; I have a unique idea ( as far as I am aware of) but I am just not sure how I can pull this of alone and with a deadline. Plus I don't have any idea who will play my game or what audience it is for and how to reach them. That area of the creation process really baffles me
@MatthewPalaje
@MatthewPalaje 6 жыл бұрын
In terms of figuring out who will play the game. With this game you're making is there anything similar to it? If so figure out what games they are, who plays them and that is your target audience. Go to them and see if they like your game concept, if you have a demo that's even better.

After watching this video I think I'd better learn required techniques fast and find a game dev job soon, and if I want to do anything related to my dream then I'd better just be a writer instead. It's very specific for your game. afaik steam does give you keys for your own game. and i mean, why wouldnt they give a key to the developer of the game? a bit of a side note, in crowdfunding getting the finished product is a bit of a given. some people even crowdfund games to get the game for a lower price, ie. giving one dollar to get access to a ten dollar game. im assuming you didnt mean this like its gonna be the only reward, but do keep it in mind

Well, LinkedIn profile of the author of the article mentioned here is more a 10 years experienced lambda developer, with no significant game title. Take advices from people who can prove they've made exactly what you intend to realize yourself, otherwise, it's probably just empty words. And even in that case, it depends if you share the same context than them. Stop looking for a recipe for success guys, think by yourself. "99% of indie dev make the mistake of prototyping first". From where are your numbers coming from ? Your guess ? And what kind of advice is that ? Of course you have to prototype first, then once you have proven your core mechanic is good you can spend resources on market research / communication / marketing and then maybe produce your game. I don't want to flame, you probably want to help indie devs here, but please don't tell what you think as the truth, because some people will believe it's true, and maybe fail because of such wrong advice. Context is the key, you can't generalize an advice to everyone.

yeah, i could ask myself all that, or i could just make the game that i want to make :) I dont care if it will never be played. I dont know who will find it, or who it wil reach, time will tell No i don't care that i'm making it for free. What makes this one different, is that it is mine, and that's all i need. but thanks for the advice.

I just can't seem to break through this invisible vail and learn this stuff. Please, if anyone has any good recommendations for tutorials on learning to use Unreal Engine 4 and/or coding I would appreciate it! I have a world created in Unreal engine, it's not much and definitely not what I'm running with. I have downloaded assets, watched other tutorials and did some trial and error but I don't feel like i'm making progress. I love to create, I make videos, using in game cinematic cameras. I've been writing for more then a decade, I wanted to get into film making but i love gaming and creating. I've got so many ideas running around in my head i need to put it on screen one way or another.

Will you get criticised alot if you make a game with the same concept of another ?
@GordonSeal
@GordonSeal 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, if it's a carbon copy and by concept you mean the gameplay, style and story. No, if you make your own spin of it and you make your project be unique in the end. For example, there are hundreds of FPS or RTS games, and they all work the same way, but most of them have something that makes them unique, like the art style or story or gameplay features.

I love your videos MP and this video has great advice, but it's not about making your Dream Game. Your dream game is about what you imagine and want to bring to make it real (well, inside a virtual world), ideas that you can LIVE and those must NOT be the players ideas, or what the marketing area says or what the market likes. If you follow what the market likes, then you will be making a game based on others ideas and imaginations, not yours, thats not a Dream game guys. As Nintendo does, they dont give a fk about what their clients want, if they see an interesting idea that THEY like, they concider it, but they wont take any idea the market loves but they dont. Its all on you guys, and i know it hurts when trying to develop your own ideas, im in the process and its frustrating as fuck but also is fun as fuck when i see something i imagined there, in my screen

If you want to develop a commercially successful game, then you'll need to have a few nickels at hand. Or, well, cold hard cash, if you're more realistic. You'll need someone to create the assets that you can't create yourself (music and sound effects are generally something that we programmers and pixel artists can't create ourselves easily). And that's without even talking about the marketing of your game.

i think you can but it will be very difficult. it would definitely help to at least have a small team to help out. if i ever learn coding i hope to make a game, but not by myself I'll probably have help from at least one friend of mine. still if you really want to and you have the drive to do it and the skill to make it happen then go for it. but you may need a lot of patience, something i dont quite have much of lol.

I'm gonna be really honest here guys : the real difficulty in making a game on your own is motivation. I know it from experience as I've been creating my own game for a year now and I know I still have probably another year in development. You can find tutorials and free resources for almost everything if you take the time to do research, though something internet can't do for yourself is giving you motivation. Having friends in the project can be of great help to keep motivation though ;) Also don't let the "coding" limit be... a limit. I'm used to computer science but for instance Unreal Engine uses the Blueprint system which is very easy to use (and with nativized functions it also runs pretty fast).
