Did you happen to notice the 2 ways that I showed, how to hold and utilize that toggle on the bowstring??? See 3:55 and 8:40.

Yucca is an extremely strong fiber and is great for cordage. I've used it many times for a bow drill bowstring and it has never broken on me. Today, I harvested several leaves from a favorite plant that I've been utilizing for years. I show you how to Reverse Wrap cordage and how to make the splices. Of course the best part... we get to try it out. I broke out the "never miss" Water Oak set and made 2 friction fires. *** I left an annotation referring you back to this Description to find out why I don't like pointy spindles which make cone shaped divots. I have found the most efficient use of a bow drillers energy is when all the force that he's applying is directed to the very bottom of the divot. Anytime the spindle contacts the side walls of the divot or shoulders out at the top of the divot, it's a waste of energy. So, a pointy spindle actually contacts more side wall of the divot than bottom. I only made this one work because my Water Oak Set is so good! Come see how well the bowstring held up, follow the LINKS below, and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You! Thanks a lot. The Spanish bayonet flowers and seeds are edible. The stalk is as sweet as sugarcane. The roots are rich in saponins, which can be used to make soap and shampoo. The roots of the Spanish bayonet can also be used to hunt fish. When mashed and placed in a small body of water, the saponins stupefy the fish, causing them to float and be easily caught. The leaf fibers can be used to make rope and string. They make great sandals. An extract from the yucca stem is used as a foaming agent in root beer.

I have used 3 Walmart bags braided for cordage but not reversed wrapped yucca. I'll have to try that. I've been having fun with horseweed spindle and willow fireboard hand drilling. Thanks for all the good advice

Yucca is an amazing survival plant. The dry stalk is my favorite material for spindle and fireboard.

We use something called snake grass here in the Caribbean (yucca family). I will try your spoon method, looks efficient. I also like the way you reverse twist and your bow design. Thank you for sharing, I'm going to harvest some snake grass today.

I make reverse wrap hemp string. Use for necklace and bracelets. Have not tried to use it for bow drill yet. Yuka appears to be very strong. The toggle in one end is new to me. I like that. Less knots which means shorter cord can do the job. Thanks for the video. You definitely are skilled.

The cordage sort of looks like one I made out of a type of grass from my backyard. The colors of the yucca is only slightly more uniform and vibrant--and of course much stronger

David What do you mean @1:36 " Then lap that bundle to the left"? What does lap mean?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 4 жыл бұрын
You're working with to bundles of strands. The bundle thats farthest from you twist it ti the right. When it is tight, lap it over the other bundle to the left. Repeat. Please visit my cordage playlist.

Great demonstration! My question: the yucca doesnt look like the yucca here. Your leaves look flexible. The ones I'm used to are very very stiff. Could it be something different? Oh! And I have made cordage using the reverse wrap with a couple different things. Hard to get used to doing, but once you get it, voila!

I’ve never used a bow drill but I heard somewhere years ago that you should slightly cant or angle the bow so the cordage doesn’t rub together possibly weakening it while sawing on the spindle. True? False? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 4 жыл бұрын
I was bowing at an angle. For years I've been telling people to bow at an angle to avoid Wrap Rub which will quickly destroy natural cordage.
