Deep box frames often need glass spacers to lift the glass away from the artwork. You can buy wood art spacers, but they are set depths, so can sometimes be limiting.
Making your own glass spacers means that you can:
colour match the spacer (sides of the frame) to the mount supporting the artwork
paint the spacers fun colours (not suitable for conservation framing due to outgassing)
make any depth you need
stop storing store spacers - I make mine as and when I need them. I use foam core and mountboard. You can also use layers of mount board to build up the depth.
use conservation or even museum mount board. This means that you don't have wood touching the artwork or outgassing into the box.
Enjoy making spacers!
