You kinda forgot the biggest difference between the 481 and the 486. Internally the 486 rotor drives a few extra 1000 rpm's more then the 481. It's gear reduction is bigger compared to the 481 to get it back down to the 2100 rpm's in speed 2. The internal rotor moving a few thousand rpm's higher means the ventilator that provides cooling air pushes alot more air and the dhp486 cools alot better. That alone is the whole reason Makita made the 486

Cools a lot better but heats more too. Only difference is noticable between these to is when you use bigger screws and big heavy drills that you dont usualy use. Only when testing. My oppinion is that there is no need to waste money on 486 if you already have 481.

The gearboxes on those models are really bad, within a few minutes the first gear is gone. happend to multiple drills of these two models. Makita must be ashamed of those models. With such major disign flaws i cannot recommand this drill to anybody. Doesn't come close to being a professional drill.

No concrete, because: 1, only 486 has percussion, 481 is the model without. 2, I do not test drills with percussion in concrete, because that percussion is not for concrete, but only for light masonry. And the percussion on these drills is almost irrelevant.

Now are the 2 drills considered professional or home owner use? I don't have a standard platform that I follow I have many different brands as I feel each one has a certain tool that works better than the rest I'm not a diehard this...or diehard that. I buy what works.. but with that said...my heart is with makita all the way!

Hopefully the DHP486 isn't as fragile and the higher RPM motor keeps the controller from burning up... Then DHP481 is the only drill I've ever actually had completely die on me. It's also the heaviest, most expensive and most heavy duty cordless drill I own, the gets the least amount of use, and yet it died with light use... DHP486 is likely a redesign to improve on reliability and longevity.

Can you take them both apart? The gearbox of the 481 contains plastic gears which break far too easily during job site use. Ive seen the 486 advertised as having metal gears so this would be good to see. Would also see me buying one if so as my 481 has been away twice now in the 3 year warranty period

on a job site those little performance superiority of 486 is not counting. 2 aspects are considered : the overall weight 600g in plus for 481, and 2 rings for setting screwdriving or drilling on 481, an advantage for 486 because when you have gloves it's hard to rotate the drilling ring. best improvement on ddf 484 too.

Wrong on both counts. 486 has the same ~ weight as both 481 and 458, if same DDF or DHP are considered, and the spec shown here is false, 2.1Kg is only without battery pack. That second ring was a feature only for top of the line drill drivers, coz' you can switch much faster to driling when you have preselected a lower torque limiter, and back again, very useful when you predrill and then screw, or anytime realy. That ring was removed only in extreme pursuit for compactness when still having a mechanical torque limiter and not an electronic one, so for a lower price realy, and more so coz' is hard to make some inexpensive torque limiter with reasonable useful low setings. Both "Milfucky" and Makita 40V failed to do this, the lowest setings is absurdly high.
