Thank you for the walkthrough :) I went even farther and took out all those gears, all the way to the chuck. One question though: what kind of lubricant are you using ? What criteria should I be looking for when buying ? Thank you.

I use Bearing grease, but universal grease is also good. Good luck

Beautiful job. How would you rate this drill? It looks rather sturdy. I noticed the recent crop of power drills from Makita has problems, with the biggest disappointment being DHP486. Dreadfully unreliable and rarely financially justifiable to repair as they removed a lot of service parts like connectors from their design to make it smaller and lighter. Maybe I can get this one instead.

Yes, this older drills where built to last a long time but the newer ones are less reliable mainly the gearbox and chuck. but if they do not have a problem it's nice to work with. Good Luck
