Purchased the XGT Mower roughly six weeks ago and am very pleased with it. Its quiet enough on quiet mode that I can mow early in the morning without waking anyone up. On regular mode, it has plenty of power to tackle thick and overgrown grass. The ergonomics are better than any push mower I've used. The only drawbacks I've found are accessory related; the 4 amp battery kit gets me 1/3 acre on quiet mode, and the standard blade is designed for efficient bagging whereas I'd rather have a mulching blade. I wanted the Milwaukee, but when HD had this on sale for $699, I couldn't justify the price increase. My Toro gas mower is great, but aside from mulching, the Makita is better in every way

I reside in Michigan. I'm debating on going with the Makita GML01PL with the two 8ah batteries. This only has 2800 rpms. I currently use a Honda HRX 217HYA 200cc with hydrostatic transmission. It cuts like a dream, and it sucks all my plant clippings up, leaves zero clumps etc etc. Like I've, vacuumed my lawn essentially. I also have large oaks and maples that drop basketball sized leaves in the fall that I use my Honda in the fall to suck them up or mulch them. Are there any issues with it or difficult to clean the underside carriage warranty repairs, etc?

They are both rated ipx4 so ok to use in wet grass/ light rain. Nice comprehensive review.

I got the 480mm/19 inch Makita XGT 40v Max lawnmower in Australia on 31st March this year. We don't have the rear rubber flap and we get the better quad swing back blades by default. I absolutely love this mower. The 19 inch with swing back blades packs the catcher 100% full and has never blocked up. The battery lid/cover doesn't hold itself up for very good reason. To stop water getting to electricals. Bound to be someone who would leave it up in rain or while cleaning and blame Makita for damages. The XGT is amazing at cutting tall grass. I haven't had an issue with build quality yet. I was wanting the Milwaukee initially but am glad i chose Makita. I looked passed the LXT because i had read of cut out issues. Tool store rep. pointed out that the mower i was ignoring was not an LXT but a new product XGT. Said it fixes alot of LXT issues has more torque/power and battery-tool communication. The kit version i got was 1 single charger, 480mm mower and 2 5ah batteries for $1599 AUD. Got XGT split shaft power head and chainsaw for free via redemption with Makita mower kit. Got line trimmer/hedger attachments, double charger and two 8ah batteries. Later got the XGT blower. I bought the xgt 40v self propelled mower a 2 months ago. It has amazing power, the bagger is great. Only issue is that the rubber piece that hangs out the back ripped off after a few days. Otherwise i dont regret getting rid of my honda powered husqvarna 160 mower. Its so easy to push i dont have to use self popel much. I have 4 4ah batteries, in auto i can do my full yard with 2 and it will take all 4 in full speed mode. I do notice when the battery gets low like you mentioned.

The reason the hatch will not stay open is to prevent someone from leaving it open then rain getting in, which would instantly destroy the machine. This is well discussed in other locations online and Makita has stated this explicitly. You can always form a little dowel to hold open the hatch, or fabricated a little block for the corner. You harp on it, but it's a feature, not a bug.

The owner's manual states that the LEFT battery is always used FIRST. When that battery is nearly discharged, swapping the batteries should give you full power again without waiting for the first one to completely empty and perform auto switch.

Get the 4x swing back blade. It has high lift and superior mulching.

I'm old enough to recall that Makita was famous for their battery-operated hand tools, especially drills. That explains why they've been slow to move to higher voltage batteries since those tools don't need 56V, 60V, batteries. The thing is now that they're making landscaping gear that benefits from higher voltage batteries, I'm not sure 40V is enough for heavy duty cutting. Same goes for their string trimmers.

Makita have tools with 2 batteries at 80V, that can provide more than 4000w of potential power, and in a BL electric motor, the power is a lot more efficient than gas, for example, the ur012g 80v trimmer, with "only" 2000w, has more torque than 45-50cc gas trimmers.

@@agusjarlim I wasn't aware Makita has 80V tools but I did research after you mentioned it. Unfortunately, it's just one model which is is a commercial brush cutter for over $1,200 using two 40v batteries (40x2).

I can’t find any info on sharpening the OEM blade (US) for GLM01. Didn’t seem sharp right out of the box, & I’m not sure which blade surfaces are cutting surfaces. All suggestions welcome. Thanks!

Just got the XGT mower with the 8.0 kit, and added two more 8.0 batteries. Today was the first day I used it commercially, and I have to say it is a very good mower almost great. The runtime is the biggest downside, build quality is a bit sketchy as well (very flimsy). And although I am deep in the Milwaukee fuel platform, I didn’t trust their mower enough to get it over the Makita 😬

The build quality is somehow a hair lesser than the lxt version. My 12.0 that came with the Milwaukee mower started only charging to 2 bars today. So….

What type blade came on your XGT mower. I’ve seen it with the 21in bar blade and some with the 4 small swing blades. How was the cut quality compared to a Honda HRX?

⁠@@VeloWeaponry mine came with the 21 inch bar blade which I believe is standard in the states. And I don’t have an hrx but do own a couple of Honda HRC 216s. Honestly, I would say it’s unfair to compare gas mowers with electric mowers this early on. Take battery mowers for what they are :lightweight and less noisy not for better cut quality.

@@shanew7361 The pros: I have six 8amp batteries and they last me a whole day's work. If you only get the two batteries it'll definitely be enough so long as you keep your yard at a moderate height. It is silent, it is lightweight, build quality somewhat flimsy but durable at the same time (if that makes sense). Overheating batteries RARELY ever happens it's happened to me like 4 times, but I just switch my batteries and continue. The cons: this thing hates mulching, it will not pick up hedge clippings or leaves for that matter, it just spreads it. The lowest setting is not low enough. And honestly that's it for cons. I clean the deck with a brush and wet towel, honestly it isn't that sticky where buildup will start caking up and that's maybe due to the poor vacuuming. I honestly can't speak on the warranties because I haven't exercised any of them. The mower is solid durability wise.

Don't know about the mowers but higher AH batteries do give you more power and run time.

Haven’t used the xml03 so can’t comment to it but seems biggest differences are 18 vs 21 inch, and self propel. If you have hills or a large yard, the self propel is probably worth it.

Question: If a person worked out a way to make space so batteries would fit, and made a 3d-printed adapter, could someone run the XGT mower with 18v batteries? Why would they do this? Because they want to run it for hours using the many 18v batteries that they already own.

I'm thinking about getting the XGT model with the 2 8 Amp hour batteries. Home depot has it for $949 on sale. A little cheaper than the problem plagued Milwaukee. Seems to have great reviews. What do you think?

I’ve tried both and I prefer the Milwaukee. I like the design of the Makita, but it doesn’t have a high speed option like the Milwaukee. Not enough suction to lift the smallest sticks. Also the handlebars felt cheap as there’s no material to grip onto other than the metal handlebar. Lastly, I didn’t like how the mower power bogs down when one battery is dying. You have to wait for it to die until the other battery kicks in. Milwaukee build quality and power is better in my opinion. I just wish they had a dual blade or a better lifting blade because it won’t suck up the small live oak leaves like my old Honda did. Other than that, it’s a beast.

@@stevenjacobs4959 Sounds like your describing the Makita LXT mower. The XGT has high speed mode on by default when mower is turned on (no lights). I agree that the Makita fading power till the battery is empty before swapping, is a poor choice. It should swap depending on mode. So it should switch to second battery to maintain performance. I'll have to test it under load at max power to see if it will switch faster or not. 4x swing back blades should have better lift than the bar blade (On Australian model by default). www.youtube.com/@lovelawns This guy has used EGO, Makita and Milwaukee mowers professionally. I don't believe that the current XGT mowers are the 40V version of the XML08/09 Commercial mowers, but are Domestic. I'd like a full Aluminium base, and preferably without self-drive, so it's light enough to push and provide a full-width exit chute. The biggest issue I have with them is the run-time and the number of batteries you need to have available for a large lawn.

I'm kind of at a loss at which direction to go. In my case, I use Milwaukee tools professionally and my home/personal project tools were long in the tooth so I thought I'd start fresh with Makita since they had a lot more selection of lawn care tools than Milwaukee did at the time. I just started with an LXT driver and was going to go from there. Now I'm stuck because they came out with XGT where lawncare would really take advantage of the extra power, but the prices are substantially higher than they are for the 36V equivalent. With the lawnmowers I think the price difference is about $300 because the LXT versions are on sale. So being that I'm not rich, if I had to buy one today, I would have to go with the LXT version and save $300 but then I'm really stuck with LXT. If they discontinue LXT tools in 4 years when I need to update my string trimmer and leaf blower, or even if they still keep them around but come out with better pricing for XGT or have tools that are must-haves, I'm stuck and I'm going to need to invest in two battery systems which are completely incompatible. I feel that this wasn't an engineering issue since surely the best engineers in Japan could have made a dual voltage battery. I mean Dewalt can do it. If I need to buy a string trimmer or the smaller tools first, I'm again in the same boat. Should I go with XGT and hope that when it's time to buy a lawn mower, prices come down or stick with the cheaper and far more available LXT? Because the batteries are not compatible, I also have a 3rd option: Stick with LXT, but get the Milwaukee Fuel string trimmer which is available right there at my store and has just as much power as the XGT trimmer, and just use those batteries with an adapter on my LXT tools. I mean if I'm going to have to have two battery systems, might as well stick to the one that's most compatible, no? It would really help if Makita would just come out and say what the timeline for sunsetting LXT will be. I know they say there are no plans to end them, but no company has ever successfully had two different flagship systems.

I get that perhaps it's necessary to keeo weight down with battery products, however I dont understand why they feel that they must make all battery products plastic-y and of dubious quality. These should be built for commercial use, but there is absolutely no way you would rely on these to stand up for long periods of time with daily use. Even those battery covers, they look like they would break off very easily. The chassis doesnt look particularly strong and the wheels look like they might become brittle after a few years in the hot Australian sun. Electric mowers just arent there, yet, for commercial use.

Rear discharge sucks. It gets in the way in uneven terrain and also when doing a turn lifting the front of the mower.

The makita blade is light in design and if you hit a branch by accident, won’t stand up. You have to take the blade off and straighten back the warp. If they made the same blade out of titanium, now that would be excellent!!! Keeping the blade light weight and very strong!!!! Oh, btw, I can’t imagine using any other batteries other than the 40v 8ah ones!!!

I bought the 14” concrete saw that came with 4 8ah batteries so in order to keep my batteries being used, I bought this lawn mower. I fairly pleased with it!!!

It’s not to clean and it stands up when you fold it so the underside is easy to get at!!!

Poor design decision to not make the handle assembly interchangeable. The non-folding handle on the XML08 is annoying, but not enough to drive me to buy a new mower. In this price bracket, Makita should've been more accommodating to owners of the XML08.

It seems like you should be able to replace the 2 hex nuts with 2 big knobs or wig nuts for easily folding the handle on 36v. It wouldn’t be as fast as the detent pin, but you wouldn’t need a wrench to fold the handle. Has anyone tried this?
