the way this song is sung feels like it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of someone craving warmth of attention and the companionship of others while going through a downward spiral of coming to terms with their own loneliness.

I just like running to it... It reminds me of a winner/fighter overcoming adversity following the path of light, striving to soar to great heights and be free while willing to die to do so.

I agree so much. Always drifting, sometimes unintentionally and sometimes intentionally searching for companionship and feelings of safety. At the end of the day chasing belonging and confirmation that we're not unlovable or broken. But eventually giving in to it all and acknowledging being lonely and unresolved forever. Informed by where I'm at mentally, but also by the lyrics and they story I see in the video.

Kind of interesting. The story in the video is based on Native American folklore about coyote. In one story, Coyote feels sorry for the man as he and his tribe are freezing to death. So coyote goes to three ancient hags who have fire but refuse to share it. Coyote sneaks in and steals the flame for the man. The hags chase him until he stumbles and the flames end up being swallowed by the trees. The hags try to convince the trees to give them back the fire but to know avail. Coyote being clever, teaches the man how to rub the sticks together to get the fire out, thus teaching the man how to gain and use fire.

My brother and I discussed this and came to the conclusion that this is a metaphor for death always trying to get you and bring you back where you belong. The "death" in this instance is the wisp that the coyote is forever chasing after, until the scene where it falls through the ice, everything after that is his spirit and that is why it always makes it 'seeminingly' out of the clutches of peril. And also why it finally reveals its true form as the Spirit of the Mountain

@@BeastRedAsh Artistic preference. I see a certain value in the way the coyote moves. You see, if it were to run realistically it would ruin the art style and the tone of the film. It would then require the animators to completely change the film entirely and lose that curtain and distinct art style with it, so them settling on the more simpler movements pleases me very much! I am so glad they stuck with this tbh. I've been working with visual arts for nearly five years now, and personally, I think they did a *flawless* job at this animation and visual composition in each frame. However, art is a preference, see it as you will, but I will continue you enjoy this video fully.

I love that attached to the main theme of standing strong in the face of adversity, is the impact of man on the coyote's environment, just as much as the environment itself. Without it being rubbed in our face & becoming repetitive, part of this coyote's life is it's incursions on the territory of man, be they the hunters or the truck that nearly hit him. Its fascinating then, that when this coyote is flying through the sky, that the hunters are looking up at him, almost as though he's transcended the perils presented to him by man. What an amazing piece.

I felt like this coyote when I used to be in love with someone that didn't want me. Always desperately chasing, always getting hurt in different ways, but always trying anyways. You could look at this video metaphorically. When the coyote breaks the ice and drowns after chasing the fire it is representing "drowning" in your desires for something/someone. It hurts, but you keep pushing forward. Next the coyote wants to get close to the fire, but the humans aggressively lash out and fire their weapons in retaliation. In our desperate attempts to get close to "warmth", (emotional or otherwise), are we doing ourselves more harm than good? The coyote follows the light that turns out to be a truck. It wants the light so desperately that it dies once more. The coyote spirit is only liberated when it can sail "above" its desires to become one with everything around it. Just my interpretation lol

Finally! A video/animation that does my spirit animal justice! Not sure whether or not I like the art style but I’m very open to different styles. I interpret the video being about how coyotes are the under-recognized “survivors” of the North American landscape. From the wildfire to the icy waters to the hunters and even the truck the coyote still carries on. And the last part I see as no matter how far we push them from where they were their adaptability will make them able to “outrun” extinction. Idk much about native american folklore so this is just my view from reading a lot about their behavior.

I think it's important to remember that in this story he is probably more chasing some light than the fire itself, it's also the reason why he seems at the end of the video to have found the right place where the moon is the brightest and then he just allow itself to sleep. Perhaps it's also saying that he could have a so great, peaceful rest that he never woke up and its body even became rock and a whole mountain over the years ? Remember also the one legend where the body of someone turned into rock, the story of Narcisse and Echo, when at the end Echo in her suffering when she couldn't speak to Narcisse because of the god's punishment but loved so much Narcisse and couldn't saved him from his own death started to transform into rock too

I interpret the coyote's relentless pursuit of the wisp of flame and the dangers encountered during the chase as a metaphor for addiction and how the pursuit of an unattainable or unhealthy goal can be fraught with risks. The insatiable desire to possess the flame leads the coyote into a multiplicity of dangerous situations, with the flame unexpectedly betraying the coyote each time. The wisp's small, harmless, enchanting light variously resolves into a forest fire, a hunting party's campfire, a rifle's muzzle flash, and a truck's headlights, and yet the coyote continues in its stubborn pursuit unabated. It's only once the coyote outgrows (literally) its desire and willingly abandons the chase at 3:46, consciously resisting the flame still seen dancing out of reach in the reflection of its eye, that it is able to find peace at last.

Huh, this actually makes lots of sense. Some say it’s a goal that the coyote wishes to reach and at the end achieves it, yet the flame always brought it almost certain death. So I actually enjoy your interpretation quite a bit. This also might relate to the song of it also possibly someone dealing with some sort of internal turmoil.
