I wouldn't put any blame on Aaron, he is incredibly talented. Instead, I would blame the WTF for making Taekwondo an extremely predictable sport where taller fighters are given a huge advantage. We may argue that Basketball also gives an unfair advantage to taller atheletes, but hey, why do we want to be like basketball ? The electronic scoring system sucks the excitement and innovation out of every single kick. Why ? Because athletes know exactly the easiest way to score a point, which happens to be the most boring and least innovative kicks, so why bother to entertain the audience ? I hope that the WTF pay attention to how poorly Taekwondo is developing, and restores back the manual scoring system just like boxing. I hope that Taekwondo restores it's excitement and spirit, and I hope that it becomes a sport that is fun to watch.
@gilbertmanson12726 жыл бұрын
The sensors are developed based on athletes complain. There are lots of controversies before WT started to use PSS regarding the inaccuracy of points scoring using the old method of scoring. Human bias always affect the matches back then. One of the athletes that complaint about these errors is Aaron Cook himself. Losing his bronze medal match in the 2008 Olympic to the chinese when it is quite obvious that he is a better fighter. Cook was quoted as saying: "I am so gutted. I came so close. I thought the scoring was absolutely horrendous. I don't know what the judges were looking at, they must have been looking in the crowd. I never tried so much in a match, and it still wasn't enough, and then I didn't know what I had to do. I am miles better than that guy. The crowd didn't affect me, but it must have affected the scoring. I can't believe the scoring. Words can't explain how absolutely gutted I am to come so close to a medal. I had the right tactics. I'd have been five to six points ahead in any other taekwondo fight." So the invention of PSS has actually made taekwondo a fair sport giving every athlete the same chances of winning. You can't just take that away. Do you have any idea how hard it is to develop the system? Boxing has some controversies during the 2016 Rio Olympic because the judges are deemed bias. WT does pay attention to this sport. That's why they made the rule changes in 2017 and this year. And they also have conducted a meeting with the people that developed the 2020 armor. Do you seriously think they don't care?
@Yuletide2516 жыл бұрын
Gilbert Manson Thanks for invoking a healthy discussion. I agree with the following: - Human errors are a problem in the traditional scoring system - The WTF definitely cares about the sport The tough questions are: - How can we build a scoring system that maintains the excitement of the sport, while giving all atheletes a fair chance ? I think it is quite evident that Taekwondo in its current state is nowhere near as fun as it used to be.

It's not the rules. It's the sensor. But do you seriously think the PSS should be gone? Because Aaron have complaint in the 2008 Olympic about the unfair judgement from the judges causing him to lose to the chinese when clearly he is the better fighter. @fatal-upsb99036 жыл бұрын
Not exactly , the old taekwondo has not turned into a sport of business , however a sport of timing , accuracy , and how smart the player is. Sure you can spin 5 times and throw a hook kick that might not even hit which is cool , but all it really takes is just one side kick if thrown at the right time in order to defeat that spin. In my opinion the old taekwondo was certainly more entertaining to watch how ever there was alot of players, only hitting body shots and tiring themselves out in the first 30 seconds. The new taekwondo sure dosent like as fancy , but we have to realize that lots of hip strength and flexibility is required in this new modern taekwondo era. I believe you also said he wouldn't be able to defend him self in a real fight.....well I sorry to break it to you. But this isn't a real fight. When it comes to any sport, the bigger guy always has the advantage. Taekwondo isn't as flashy as it used to be because fighters have become more smart as well. They are more aware of distance and timing. They don't spin as much because they can get cut kicked mid spin. You don't see as many power leg roundhouses because you can also get cut kicked mid turn. With rule changes the sport is getting better. Its actually a pretty difficult thing to fix.

Since I belong to the modern era, I really understand how difficult it is to register a point on electronic armors, causing fighters to control their kicks, reducing their speed and power. I've been searching for young and known athletes who competed in 2008 Beijing and honestly, Those athletes that still exist today are countable with my ten fingers. But we can't blame the fighters themselves, they trained for so many years being engaged in flashy and powerful kicks and these electronic armors ruined their fighting style. No wonder so many athletes that came from nowhere have competed in 2012 and 2016 Olympics. I really hope that WTF would come up to a solution for this. I think requiring more power in order to score on these armors could make a difference. I'm looking forward for better changes, Goodluck WTF!

Sure, Aaron kicks hard. But if he's not hitting the hogu, then what's the point of all power with no accuracy? To be quite frank, a lot of the same people criticizing modern taekwondo are those who aren't competing anymore. I started old school and learned to make the transition to stay in competition as did Aaron. There is a lot of control, accuracy, and mastery of muscles in the hips and core that people who don't practice new style overlook. I'd like naysayers to take a moment to reevaluate their criticism and see that new school Taekwondo has its merits and isn't easy or necessarily inferior to old school. It may be less entertaining because athletes aren't blasting out combos to receive scoring influenced by loud noises from their kicks or voices, while also being subject to human error. But there is a very real skillset and control involved to be able to fight and score accurately without bias. By the same token, I think that the sensors on the bottom of the foot are far too sensitive, scoring even the weakest of kicks and this is what is ruining Taekwondo today because it allows a lot of bs kicks to score. I don't think Taekwondo today is perfect, and it can really be improved by revising the sensor thresholds and the perhaps expanding the sensor locations to the side of the feet as well. Hopefully the new and old school communities can come to a better understanding of each other and elements of both where real Taekwondo and fair scoring can be represented in future Taekwondo. Cheers.

@leledumbo6 жыл бұрын
It's not the threshold that matters, but rather the positioning. If whip and push kicks can score easier than roundhouse, something is not right to me. I think it's not enough relying only on registered weight, as that can be manipulated by push. I'm not sure if there are any suitable sensors, though. Moreover, the current calculator is already complex, employing multiple sensors to detect spinning and high section kicks. The engineers would need to look backwards to see if there are any better calculation methods rather than improving upon current one. The invisible factor that makes deep push kick looks as hard as powerful snap kick must be found and eliminated.
@andreifarcas71736 жыл бұрын
I beleve that it is too easy to score and that is why the front foot is used so much. If the power needed to score was increased the sport would become entertaining again because fighters would begin to kick with speed and power using their back foot as their main weapon.
@ChrisKsan6 жыл бұрын
Accuracy what for? Tickling points away? Screw that! Taekwondo is based on a martial art, not on ping pong or something non-combative. While accuracy is very important, the new school style brought about bs kicks which aren't actual kicks and from purely a combat point of view they are absolutely useless. No power, no effectiveness, 0 chances of causing any damage or phasing an attacker. If we only focus on electronic scoring of points and 100% safety, might as well pick up a joystick and score away. That being said, new school style is not easy, just straying Taekwondo further and further away from realism and the martial art, which us actually why a lot of old school fighters quit the sport. If the new school keeps heading that touchy-touchy route, we will really end up just doing "ballet-dancing", as often crytisized by fellow martial arts styles. Luckily though, some minor rules changes help promote combativeness.

They should change the scoring point registration system. Side/push kicks should count as 1 point as this does not doe too much damage/pain compared to other harder kicks. A good dollyeo chagi (roundhouse) should be 2 points. Headkicks 3 points. This would allready change the whole game. Aaron is out of breath due to his harder more difficult kicks not landing or getting registered.

"more difficult kicks not landing or getting registered." That's the key of current scoring system, power doesn't matter if it doesn't hit. OTOH, when it hits, it has to have enough power. If only power matters, one can just wildly attack despite hitting illegal areas. More fun for spectators? Could be. Fairer for the athletes? I don't think so.

Not all fights fall under your definition, there are exceptions. They are few, but they are!
