Just imagine if the young people of today knew what real talented singers sounded like with a live band. Real music with lyrics that make sense that one can relate to. Back in the day, our community didn't tolerate mediocre singers. You had to bring it! That is why we had so many great singers in gospel, jazz, the blues and R& B. Few singers to day even come close the greats. So glad I know what "real good music" is!

Johnnie Taylor was gifted. Truly gifted. He’s in the realm of talent that consists of David Ruffin, Sam Cooke. Otis Redding. Just a giant in terms of down home soul singing vocals. What a magnificent man.

I had the pleasure of seeing JT several times. The most memorable time was in Macon, Ga. Tyrone Davis and Dorothy Moore was on the show. It was a fabulous show. They both wore white suits and Johnnie had diamonds every where! When Dorothy Moore sang Misty Blue, the audience went crazy and she sang it twice! That was a show of shows!!

One of my music buddies, who I went to college with back in the early 80s. (Chuncey Askew) played Trumpet in Johnnies band. I remember him sharing a story with me one time. He said that Johnnie would stay in a 4 or 5 star hotel and put his band members in a 1 or 2 star hotels. The pay wasn't all that great, but he was glad he was getting the experience being out on the road. He was only 21 or 22 at the time. He died in his 20s, but neither I or our other music buddies know what from. May you R.I.P. Mr. Askew. R.I.P.
