Nursing is not for everyone. Nursing is hard work, patience and perseverance. It is the reality wherever you are in the USA. If you’re in it solely for the money then you’re in the wrong place. In the 37 years of my nursing career here in the USA, patient care has drastically changed. The acuity is more challenging hence stressful. You are also faced with the longtime problem of being short staffed and faced with administrative budget constraints. Truly not for everyone. So for those who continue to love what they’re doing despite the odds, hats off to your dedication 😊

Just food for your thoughts : My story. I'll be honest, I went into Nursing as a 2nd choice to Medicine as my parents wished for me. Once I got to internship I came to love it. Got married before graduation, took the BRN, started a family in Manila. My family ( kids ages 6, 5 and 3 ) and I immigrated to the US, worked as nurses' aide, as RN the next year, also had baby # 4. I worked bedside Nursing for 14 yrs. Management x16 years. It was very rewarding professionally as well as financially. It was also very stressful and physically and emotionally hard. I found myself crying on way home many times. Thought of quitting and changing careers. Through it all I managed to hang on. I could have worked 5-10 more years for the $$$ but Why???. My children are all grown/ on their own. After reviewing our finances we made a plan. We paid off bills -- cars, credit cards cut up, subscriptions etc. We did budget for travel, rainy day savings, health care costs ( we paid health insurance tiil 65 y.o). In the end our lifestyle didn't really change much. Retiring earlier was one of the best decisions we've ever made. Life is short... Enjoy while you can. I hope this gives some insight/ inspiration.

Nursing is really a hard profession... not anyone can stay in that profession... palakasan ng loob yan eh, hanggang sa maging immune ka na sa mga pagmumura at pang-aalipusta sau ng mga pasyente at mga relatives .... ako iniisip ko n lng, isa lang ang dapat katakutan sa buhay nating ito... si Lord God...sa kanya lng tayo umasa... kapag may nang-aapi o nang-aaway s atin, tawag lng tayo sa Diyos. Ipaubaya mo s kanya lahat. Entrust everything to God kasi this is not our real world nmn eh. Kelangan nating magtiis and at the same time magpakabuti para when the time comes, we will be able to enter the Kingdom of God in Heaven. All of these on earth are just a test. Sisiw lang nursing sa US, mas mahirap sa Pinas. Just don't dwell on the negatives and work hard, save and invest to achieve financial freedom para makapag-retire ng maaga. Pay off mortgage and all debts para walang stress pag retire. I was able to retire early debt-free at 38 after 20 years of hard work in SoCal. I did not buy the latest car, shoes and clothes. I focused on my goal of freedom from being an employee. Did not try to keep up with others. Now, my money works for me and I can buy what I need and want. Paid off house in 15 years. Happiness from material things is temporary, financial freedom is permanent and can be transferred to our loved ones. I stayed away from negative people and just worked hard, saved/invested, and focused on my goal . It can be done.😊

I worked in nursing homes, SNF, HH, Hospice, Rehab, MedSurg, Telemetry, ICU, CCU and PACU. If you get stressed out easily by patients and family members, nursing is not for you. I agree. A job is a blessing. There is stress in any job but good time management and less gossiping in the workplace will alleviate some of the stress. No job is perfect. No doubt nurses work hard so they need to work on their finances instead of keeping up with their co-workers on the latest car, Iphone, bags, jewelry and things. Financial freedom should be their goal and retiring early in order to get out of the rat race. Being debt-free with emergency savings, investments and retirement accounts will reduce their stress as they won't have to work so many shifts and OT.

🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 I heard from the older nurses 40 or so years ago when I was still a rookie and a then-young registered nurse that they used to take care of 15-20 patients with the assistance of one “orderly.” They bragged to us that they got their job done with little complaints. Upon scrutiny, they admitted that their nursing documentations were very minimal during their time and we suspected that higher number of errors had to be being committed, although I hope I am wrong. (The tittle of “hospital orderly” is almost never heard of nowadays as the orderlies have been replaced by certified nursing assistants who obtained more formal trainings) In the early 1980’s, we were routinely assigned 6-7 patients at the start of our shift with a potential for 1-2 admissions. We worked very hard then, we always felt stressed, and through the years the workload of nurses had only gone up along with higher patient acuity. Then new Federal and state governments, and Joint Commission regulations forced the nurses to devote more of their precious little time to more nursing documentations. When we switched to computer documentations more than a couple of decades ago, a number of the “older” nurses decided to retire instead of trying to learn computer documentation. That made nursing staffing to go from bad to worse in our hospital. There is now a law in California that directs the acute care hospitals operating in the state of California to limit only 5 patients to 1 nurse in medical-surgical units, and 2:1 in intensive care units. This has been beneficial not only for nurses but more importantly for the patients as well because I truly believe this has resulted in better and safer nursing care.

Sad to say that most Americans nowadays have something in common. They lack self control, they don't practice patience, they're combative, confrontational, discriminating, nagging, judgemental, feeling entitled, and disrespectful towards non Americans. I found it out during my years of experience on my call center jobs. They tend to choose fighting easily over patience while on the phone. But I'm not saying everyone of them is like that okay! There are still a lot of good ones among them, of course! I just hope that the good ones would grow their numbers over the coming years! 😢

@@paengguin9381 financial literacy is so lacking in a lot of Filipinos and on some Americans. I am glad there are plenty of opportunities here to take advantage of the stock market. I wish I had learned about it earlier, although I admit that when I first came to the US, being a present parent to my young boys was my priority so I was working mostly part-time but enough to have benefits), saved very little (2% of my income and never increased) but lived frugally with only my car as my major expense). Learned about FI at age 49 and within 2 years got my retirement savings to 1/3 of what is needed to retire completely, and no debts, then covid happened (and stock markets plummeted), got burnt out, and I quit nursing. Had emergency funds good for a year of mini-sabbatical to nourish my soul back to health and upskill on tech. I now work in tech and back to catching up with my savings, but also with appreciation that life is short. So while still saving up for retirement, I live intentionally and added some travel to my splurges. Hopefully I can convince my husband to geoarbitrage to the Philippines during retirement at least during winter months. I also hope he will be on board with my FI aspirations (took him a while to convince that investing is not just for the rich, but at this time he is not contributing to our retirement savings and mainly focused on providing for our needs, with plans to “work til he dies.” Every now and then I ask him questions like, what if I become disabled suddenly? We are ageing and can no longer ignore that possibility. He needs to come up with a feasible plan in such scenarios.

🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 What she is saying here is totally true! Short staffing is a chronic problem due to the shortage of nurses here in the U.S. I worked in a large county government owned hospital for over 27 years in the San Francisco Bay Area here in California and my job there was not easy. I began my U.S. nursing career in the early 1980’s when registered nurses in the SF Bay Area were earning a yearly salary of only $22,000. Nowadays RNs can earn $150,000 or more per year if employed in large acute care hospitals. Nursing is a very, very stressful but a professionally and personally rewarding career. I am proud and feel privileged to be in this profession. I have been retired from my government hospital job and I am now working in a very different type of nursing job on a part time basis and I am enjoying my semi retirement with my retired wife and our 3 grandchildren.

Natural lang yan naranasan ko rin ang mga yan, I am now retired , I worked for the City and County of SF for 31 years, konting tiis lang now I’m enjoying my grandchildren .Bata pa kayo ,ako noon enjoy ko ang work ko but then nagkaroon ako ng injury sa back at medyo bored and stressed narin kaya I retired early at the age of 56.Wala ng time ang mga nurses ngayon sa dating bedside care na hinahanap hanap ng mga pasyente dahil most of nurses free time ay nasa harap ng computer .

When workers are on longer treated humanely plus complaints and lawsuits those are big factors that push them to get out and look for conducive working atmosphere regardless of salary. Stress can kill a person than the actual tasks.

Then uwi na sa Pinas... Malaki ipon at same time nakakapag enjoy and nakakatulong pa dn sa family❤ goodluck po.

Nursing is not it used to be in the states, legally most of my friends and even I have to deal with the constant complains and even lawsuits of patients ,this is one reason of why most of my colleagues had left the nursing industry . As for me I also had found my other passion and I get paid more now less stress too at work... hindi lang nursing and malaki ang sweldo sa US ,a notion that all Filipinos have yes it is big, but again it's not it used to be! 10 patients to 1 nurse lol or 2 then the stress u get no amount of money buy peace of mind and less stress at work..not to mentionnthode damn paperworks!

I agree! People are disagreeing on what im saying, maybe they cant accept that is the truth about nursing right now. It could be your passion but if it makes you unhappy its useless. On the other note may i asked what do you do now in exchange of nursing? Thanks!

Tiredness should not be an excuse! Sa ratio d2 mababa pa rin ang sahod pero if you compare particularly sa private hospitals mataas naman ang sahod ng government in fairness!

You are right!! Nurses are leaving or retiring too early because it’s getting harder… meaning, too many responsibility and might get fired or sued just a small mistake due to heavy assignments, no help, too much complain from patients, etc. Nursing job specially in the US no longer the “ love job” or “dream job” anymore!

Just understand that sick people don't have any patience and they are frustrated with themselves being sick like there's no cure or nothing helps them to feel better. So for those nurses that hasn't experienced any abuse from their patients whether verbal or physical my suggestion is not to take it personally but understand that it's part of the patient's dealing with his/her ailments

Ask your friends where you want to go na nandun na. Ask them not to sugar coat what they will tell you.

If you are going to practice nursing in the usa. Please get malpractice insurance. I recommend NSO they have good insurance for all kinds of healthcare workers. It will protect your license and it is better to have one than not to have one. The facility will never protect you and your license. You are responsible if you make a mistake. It is not expensive and you can get good coverage.

Don’t wait too long to be a nurse, find a business, while you are young. Don’t be materialistic, save, don’t compare yourself to others with a lot of bling bling, kasi utang yon. Kasi nursing use and abuse na. Kaya the Philippine nurses are the one being use and abuse. Then you will have culture shock, mentally problem. Dapat makapal ang balat mo. Maraming pera pero maraming taxes binabawas. Getting with other nationalities are stress too.
