I come from a physical medicine profession and I love anatomy and technique. This is definitely the very best video on HOW TO GRIP THE CLUB by far. Also that the left limb and the right limb have their own specific role. Brilliant. Many years ago I introduced a friend to golf and after her first game, where she shot in the low 90’s she said “ So what is so difficult about this game” and I can remember answering “ you wait ‘til you learn how to hit the ball properly then you will realise how difficult golf can be.”

An update, Tonight at the range I made the change in my grip, just as Mike suggested. Took me 3 or 4 swings to get it sorta right. Still have to Relax my shoulders, arms and hands more, but I was able to hit my 23 * rescue 195 yrds carry, swing speed ramped up to an amazing 110 mph. Now, some may say, that's not all that great, but, I'm 72, have a curved & twisted spine, and arthritis in my lower back, Once I get more relaxed I expect to see even better results. So, a Huge thank you Mike..

I was a confident free swinging, John Daly style swinger, 3 hdcp at 30 years old. Was “advised” to shorten my backswing and I could be scratch. I played twice a week. Those first ever lessons ( the Ballard connection) destroyed my love for golf and my confidence. This is the BEST teaching, preaching I’ve ever heard. At 72 my hdcp is 13. I went out last time and using Mikes ideas and shot 39/41/80 with 36 putts. There’s HOPE! Blessings Mike!

One thing i always atruggled with was this: at setup there is an angle between the arms and the club, and with low grip pressure the club and arms will want to be in a straight line during the downswing. This results in the clubface being opening at impact, and the ball taking off to the right. I've tried to forcefully keep the setup angle intact during impact, which can only be done with tight hands and arms, and it gives very inconsistent results. Now you talk about the strong left hand grip, and that makes perfect sense! With the club and arms extended to a straight line, the clubface is square! 😊. Thanks for your videos.

I'm glad I watched this again. I used to play with a left hand grip that was so strong, a friend called it "a three knuckle grip with the wrong three knuckles".😏 In an effort to become more orthodox, I made it a lot more neutral. It's been years of frustration. Every time I get the nerve to try my old grip again, it just works, but it's so odd, I feel like I have to return to something more orthodox. When I bend over and hang my left arm, as you suggest, my hand falls right into the position of my crazy strong left hand grip. So, I'm off to the range to take back my game. Thanks, Mike.🙏🏻

I played to a 3 handicap by the age of 17, gave the game away for 35 years, come back to golf 6 years back got a lesson and had grip changed (to neutral opposing palms) and have never been able to find the feel I had as a young fella. just picked up a club and extended my arms adjusted the face square when straight, addressed a ball,, hey presto, back to my old days strong grip, cant wait to get to the range to give it a crack. Great Information Mike, Thank you

I had no idea how "neutral" my grip had become until I viewed this video. I was one who opened the clubface in the first 12 inches of takeaway and spun it back for contact. I hit some decent shots from time to time and got my HC down to 7. After a great round two weeks ago (one-over) everything fell out is sync and my last two rounds were 92s - one being in league competition. After viewing this video I decided to commit to changing my grip and I watched Mike's balancing video. Just came back from the range and wow! If a lightning storm wasn't approaching I could have easily stayed there for another two hours. It was fun again, much less effort, and I could finally feel the club in front of me and slightly moving me back to lever the shaft. A really nice pattern appeared and my 140yd- 8 iron was now 7-10 yards further. Thank You Again Mike

You described me to a T! I stumbled onto the idea of strengthening my grip because I had a neutral grip and I tended to cup my wrist. This resulted in timing issues in squaring up the face. I tried a strong grip as a last resort to get some consistency and I was amazed!! This led me to search for more information and I found this video. Feels good to know that the fix I "discovered" is a legit way to play.

Hi again Mike, another reflection. There's much confusion about wrists and the role they play. Probably misconceptions. You mention @12:23 "...you cannot use your wrists too much.", and @12:52 "...they (the wrists) are extremely ACTIVE.". Padraig Harrington stresses active wrists as well, as the means for speed and distance. Well, active? No. But are they moving quickly relative to the forearms? Yes. So, I think the wrists should be passive, thus allowing for hinging and rehinging. They should follow the club as it swings, but without losing the grip. Think about Iron Byron. Or Bobby Jones. In essence, I believe that the hands should not impose forces that obstruct the handle of the swinging club. But the wrists must of course flex to avoid that. Perhaps is that active? Or is it passive? Semantics, but important semantics. Anyway, gravity and the momentum of the club will take care of the rest.

This is the best video about grip I watched so far and it solved my issue for sometimes hitting the ball with lower launch angle and hitting the top of the ball. Before I watched this video I thought my issue could be that I did not have cosistent club head height control. After I watch this video and use left arm to natually lift the club and check the head face I noticed that the head face sometimes too close. After I correct the face I could consistently have good contact. What I learned is that after I hit several balls the head face gradually become too close. Not sure if my grip too loose. Anyway now I always check the head face using the method in this video and the contact becomes much consistent!

Hey Mike, you are the man! I've been playing golf since 1957 and teaching since I retired in 2009. Your videos are awesome but if I could simply suggest one small thing, it might help a bunch of golfers. In and around 24:04 in this video, you are demonstrating your golf swing. Your right wrist is moving a certain way. However, since you are standing STRAIGHT UP and also your upper body is not "twisting" back around to the left, it might confuse some people. My suggestion would be to demonstrate this right wrist move while in your actual SETUP position with your chest facing somewhat down toward the ground and also do this slowly as you begin your DOWN swing back toward the impact zone. Not sure if this is clear but if you understand what I'm trying to express, golfers will see how this move ACTUALLY WORKS DYNAMICALLY. When I teach my students, they seem to understand the concept better when demonstrated in the actual position rather than if I stand straight up. I think a lot of golfers believe the swing is more horizontal than vertical when actually it's a combination of the two. I'm just trying some constructive suggestions. Love the videos. Wish you were closer. I'm in Half Moon Bay not far from Half Moon Bay Golf Links/Ritz-Carlton.

Mike, Im so glad I found your youtube page a year ago. I have had the same experience as you. Im not on your level of play but I went through the same stages as you. I was naturally good on my own. I shot very consistent gold usually around 80, 81ish. I had some flaws which some early lessons fixed. Then I started with some real lessons in my early 20's and some stuff work but mostly I kept getting worse and worse when they changed my grip and had me rolling the club as well. I was told the toe of the club up at hip high was square. I had a strong left hand and was told I needed to weaken it. All the same stuff. It was a blessing to find you and tell me the stuff I was told was bad was actually good stuff. I have now found consistency again.. I understand it so much better. I was a horrible layer offer of the club and I know now the the stuff I was taught to fix it actually made it worse. So glad to be back on the right path now.

when I first started playing golf my friend who was a golfer set up my grip interlocking with a strong grip and a few other things. I remember how awkward it felt at first but I hit it good with a small slice with driver, straight with irons.I was in my 20,s and I loved to swing with my whole body aggressively over time I lost that whole swing. Your videos are bringing me back to that grip and everything is naturally falling into place my hip shoulders feet and trusting the swing and just letting it go. I feel 40 years younger.

Hello Mike, I should thank Be Better Golf for all his hard work and getting out there to bring in the greats like yourself. Through Be Better Golf I found your channel. I also want to thank you for share your insight on the golf grip. I was having the very same issue where originally I used a strong grip by mere accident. To later be told that the grip I was using was going to cause inconsistent shots. After that I was forced to learn to play a fade that started out as a 60 yard slice. Early on I had to aim way left if I wanted to keep it in the fair way. After awhile I was able to tame that slice and produced a fade. But never hit a draw until recently when I started playing around with my grip. I simply truned my left hand clockwise laid my right hand over it and BAM! It was going to the left. It took some tweeking to turn a hook into a draw. But magically I was hitting a draw, the first ever. The lecture you give in this video really helped me understand what was actually happening. I can't thank you enough. I'm still fairly new to Golf ⛳️ and have alot to learn, I totally get it now the grip is where it all starts. Thanks again Mack...

Thank you for clarifying the golf grip and what a golf swing consists of. i have discontinued previous swing, and am now swinging easily and effortlessly after only one practice !! and im only swinging the club with 50 or maybe 60 % power...the ball just clips along with beautiful trajectory and length. I swing the club now with no rigidity or horrible swing thoughts lol. I'd been swinging that all my life and thought it was suppose to be that difficult...was I ever wrong. This is such a game changer, literally. i am still in the infancy stage this natural swing and i cannot wait to go out to the again and have purpose in my practice. I can fade or draw the ball now or simply hit it straight. i appreciate all the work and research you put into this, and I am so fortunate to have found your online teachings. Looking forward to watching more of your videos, and playing golf soon :) Rob Beaulieu, Barrie Ontario, Canada.

Nice Video as always Mike! I was a tennis player for 6 yrs and the very first time I placed my left hand on a golf club, I instinctively used the so-called "strong grip" and swang very naturally and athletically. However, my first golf instructor who was a very nice man but very old-school told me and forced me to change to a "neutral" grip and shift weight to the right during the backswing, both arms lifting high, and flip hands during the impact....etc the whole nine-yard stuff you knew about and I had to use so many kinds of wrist and shoulder compensations to square my clubface. After 2 yrs, I injured my lower back and my left elbow injured with "tennis elbow". How sarcastic!!!! 6 yrs of playing tennis with no injury but 2 yrs of playing golf got me "tennis elbow". lol.....that was when I started searching for golf tips during my recovery period. Your videos help me.....especially the grip part. Now I am a Stack& Tilter and with your "strong grip", it feels so natural and my lower body can turn smoothly, and my arms/hands can rotate with my torso. What a great feeling!! THANK YOU!

Mr. Malaska, Important stuff here Sir! Your work is producing some quite profound results in my personal and professional life. Listening, watching, & learning intently is serving well, not only on the practice putting greens, the range and course, but also in my professional endeavors. I am taking many of your poignant words, concepts, and ideas along while working with clients in basketball skills training, and when coaching H.S. Bball. Your examples and experience w/body mechanics (& how those few years probably produced lesser results ) was refreshing to hear, as I have had similar issues. Why waste time? Use what works for you in this “art form”. Yes, science is great for sports, but there’s a time and place, and time is of the essence, and there’s no time waste!? To sum it it up...I appreciate you Sir, and it is great to have access to your channel! Stay UP! Coach Lambert

He just knew where he was going before he swung. Thats why when i practice i try to call my shots and curve them there, left right high or low. It really helps if your focused on how you want to hit it than just where your aiming.

Dear Mike, I thank you for all the good advice and your sincere and humble way of saying them. It seems to me as if any player's optimal grip is a grip that fits posture and body - joints, length of limbs and spine etc. Body geometry is individual. A grip that does not depend on a deliberate rotation of the forearms, or other manipulation actions, should be beneficial to all golfers. Perhaps is that "a neutral grip" for some players? You advocate a strong grip (for you). Shawn Clement does the same, Fred Couples is another. We all know that Freddie shot 60 on Sunday at the Champions Tour a month ago, at the age of 63.

I was at the point of absolute frustration with my game, your videos opened my mind to the tension I was introducing into my body and its impact on my ability to swing properly. I’ve just had the most satisfactory practice session in a long time 👍 many thanks 😁

Wow. I have worked forever to weaken my grip due to hooking. This is an entirely new thought. Working on the right hand. Wow again!

I’ve been playing off and on for more than six decades. Of course, when I first learned the game as a caddy, we were taught the neutral grip. I made it work most of the time, but about ten years ago I began to lose the physical ability to time my swing consistently. This is hands down the best explanation of how grip influences swing. I’m in the process of changing my swing to one based on a strong grip, but my instructor has not explained the physiology behind what we are doing. NOW I understand and can happily commit to the process ⛳️

Mike, I lost significant yardage from my driver when I changed my grips from standard size to midsize. Thanks to you I now understand why. I have the grip up in my hands more with the midsized grip.

As a former baseball player myself, Mike's instructions resonate with me completely. Mike made the cut in 1986 at Shinnecock while other past and future Open champions did not (Corey Pavin, Curtis Strange, Scott Simpson, etc.)

Hi Mike. I have been struggling with my consistency all summer. I watched this video this morning and headed to the driving range at lunch. WOW. What a difference in my ball flight and my overall distance. Going to the range tomorrow to practice again before my round on Sunday. The best thing is I can practice the grip anytime to ingrain the left hand on the club. I have always held it with palms facing each other. Thanks Mike.
