It seems like somewhere closer to 60% is more accurate. - As a tourist, I got the impression that Malaysia is a Muslim country. difficult to define.. malaysia has an official religion which is Islam, majority are muslims, and malaysia is member of OIC. generally the rules for example no kissing in public area are based on islamic values. however there are freedom to practice other religions freely, we celebrate deepavali christmas chinese new years with public holidays. it's a mixture in my opinion, not that Islamic like Saudi nor fully secular like the West. ☺️

Imam al-Baghawi (510 H) quotes in his interpretation from al-Kalbi regarding the meaning of "middle people" are members or religious followers who are just between being excessive (extreme) in worship and lax in carrying out the religious shari'a which these two characteristics is highly criticized in religion. I live in both cities, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, being a Caucasian / European. I hold residency in both and honestly, each of these cities / countries has its own character. Bangkok is way more intense, rowdy, noisy and brutal, whereas Kuala Lumpur is more laid back, traffic is less congested and the people are actually smiling more in KL, than in the land of smiles / Bangkok. Both are located in the tropics, hot and humid all year around. Both suffer at times from bad pollution / haze and costwise there isn’t much difference either, Bangkok being more expensive (double), when it comes to housing. And even though Thailand is predominantly Buddhist and Malaysia predominantly Islamic, religion is more within the people’s minds, than it is on the street or in regulations. You will not be confronted in any way with any religious rulings or dealings, if you choose not to be around a mosque or a temple. Malaysians in general are laid back and friendly, hospitable and interested to meet foreigners, with a good command of English, whereas the Thai in general are a bit more reserved and English is not widely spoken everywhere. When it comes to the stereotyping of sex tourism, of course Bangkok is in the face, but don’t be mistaken, Kuala Lumpur has its’ massage parlours and prostitution as well. It is just less visible, but it is there, when you look for it. Foodwise, Malaysia may have more variety and a diverse palate, whereas Thai food is, well, Thai food. Both countries love their spicy dishes and you’re in food heaven, if you like hot, bold flavours.

We have a large community of Koreans and Japanese living in Malaysia. Along with Chinese tourist and the daily commute of Singaporeans to Malaysia for holidays and shopping. Indonesians are regular visitors to Malaysia especially for medical tourism. During hot-summer season, we have a huge influx of Middle Eastern tourist. We also have tens of thousands of international students in our various public and private universities and private schools as Malaysia is an Education Hub. Thailand is our close family and I would love for tourists to visit both Malaysia and Thailand as West Malaysia is connected by land. Why pick only one when you can go to both and maybe make a rendezvous to Singapore too. All you need to do is search for Malaysia in KZbin and you will find so many vlogs.

Great observations - I am just about to return to Malaysia for a quick three week trip after being a SE Asia backpacker 35 years ago. Thailand was awesome back in 1990, clearly not all set up with the backpacker tours and minibus transfers that are now the norm, but I remember crossing the border from Thailand to Malaysia and it seemed just that much more advanced in terms of infrastructure, transport, cleanliness and ability to communicate with the locals. Don't get me wrong loved both places, spent 3 months in Thailand (90 day visa on arrival was the norm at that time) and only couple of weeks in peninsula Malaysia. Looking forward to another small dose of SE Asia in the coming weeks, and now being aged mid-50's Malaysia might be the right fit for my demographic! Great video btw.

Sean, thank you for promoting a bit bout malaysia. Actually malaysia is not lacking of tourist annually from statistic view. It is just because you dont see crowd of westerner tourist all over the place in malaysia. Malaysia never promoting tourism for bacpacking or budget tourist but targeting more on retirees, family, long term vacation etc. malaysia has the highest number for muslim tourist and traveller. Malaysia also promoting targeted group most from china, japan, korea. Thats why you dont see much tourist because the most tourist is asian mostly neighbouring country indonesia, phillipines, thai and many muslim countries tourist especially middle eastern tourist that flocking and targeting but the country. It is not that we not promoting to westerner, but the westerner is more on solo travelling and we focus for long term vacation for westerner traveller with nomad bisa, mm2h program, 90 days visa free for most western countries etc. Foreighner wont be able to distinguish whose local and whose tourist in malaysia because they all look the same as the malaysian because we have many local malay, chinese, indian even arabs and speak their languages also. Thats the unique about malaysia with tagline " MALAYSIA TRULY ASIA"😂😂😂😂

I nearly visited Kuala Lumpur back in 2022 but instead chose Bangkok; though I do plan to visit KL when I visit Asia again. The biggest factor for me was the transit system and cost of food/lodging. Malaysia tends to be a little more expensive in those regards. When I visit new countries its not about the parties or alcohol its about experiencing a new culture by speaking with locals, trying the foods and of course long walks around the city hopefully finding hidden gems. Travel is what you make of it and for me its expanding the horizons and learning more about myself in the process.

As far as english is concerned, we use english a lot in our daily conversation.. our mortgage agreement is usually in English.. I speak manglish with friends, especially with non malay friends but use proper English in workplace. We love our foods and take pride in them, but Malaysian also like to travel to Thailand, especially the southern part. Just to enjoy their food and also the scenery. For Malaysian, the language barrier is almost non-existent in southern Thailand because of the large numbers of Thai Malays community there

Drugs are rife in Malaysia, particularly among the Malays. Alcohol is no more expensive than many other countries. Sex is available easily and especially from young Muslimah who don't want to be married to a local and suffer a lifetime of abuse.

Malaysia is not relying much in tourism as our main source of income. We are not suitable for backpacking because our set up is different and the people prefer things to be organised and having a well dressed people around. We are working hard towards being a developed country status. Physically you will see that we are a modern society, appreciate beauty and cleanliness. We have high tech facilities and infrastructures.
