Malaysia does not need to compete with top companies like TSMC, SMIC, Nvidia and ASML. Malaysia can supply legacy chips to the Western world that wants to derisk from the Chinese market. Over 70% of the world's processors are using legacy chips and it is still in high demand as most electronic good do not require high computing power.

Longer term planning is always a good idea. Why go for legacy. Aspire for the next gen. Legacy is the way to obsolescence.
@ViolentCabbage-ym7ko3 ай бұрын
@@ptaeiy-n2h Legacy chips are not obsolete because most of the electronic goods such as washing machines, refrigerators, radios, alarm clocks, microwaves, routers etc does not need high tech 4nm chips to work, and businesses are looking for ways to cut the cost. Older generation chips cost a fraction of the price but are still reliable and powerful enough to get the job done. Malaysia does not have the resources and the talents to compete with high tech companies like TSMC, ASML and SMIC. These companies pour billions of dollars into R&D and there's no guarantee that the chip will have high reliability and yield. Hence, why China is having difficulties producing 5nm chips because of the high production cost but a low yield product. Even if Malaysia somehow manages to produce a high-tech chip decades later, there's always a possibility that the US and EU could see Malaysia as a threat and impose a chip ban like China. All that billions of dollars in R&D will go to waste because no country that want to do business with the US will buy Malaysian chips. This is why, it's best if Malaysia focus more on legacy chips that are still widely used today.

In short, people's work ethic is the most important thing to be successful, not only the fabrication machine. Taiwan, Japan and Korea people have excellent reputation to work extremely hard. Honestly, I don't think Malaysia will ever reach that level despite currently enjoying huge foreign direct investment in semiconductor fabrication and data center facilities.

Sorry Malaysia, this is too much of a reach. Malaysia had embarked on highly ambitious projects without much to show for it. Trying to compete with American, and East Asian companies may be unattainable. LKY advised Singapore to compete with countries we can win. I think that’s a more sound strategy. Singapore has significant IT exports, but doesn’t try to build companies like Qualcomm, Nvidia, etc. Malaysia, I wish you the best. I just think there are more attainable goals where you have natural advantage. IT is a hard long road.

Fully in the same page with you. They don't have the oustanding brain, talent and no strong work ethics to compete with Japan, Korea or Taiwan.. Even Intel can't compete with those East Asia tigers.. Universities in Malaysia do not excel in science and technology, even University of Malaya is not recognized for its science and engineering discipline, how can they provide competent engineer in this highly competitive business? This is too ambitious, just like Forest City project in Johor...
