This is part 1 of a multi-episode series covering the Warrens/the Pathways, the Elder Warrens, Houses, Holds, Gods, Ascendants, and the Malazan Book of the Fallen Pantheon. This was meant to be more of a general overview with minimal (if any) spoilers, with the goal to get more into the origins of the warrens, relationships to houses and gods, and how worship plays a role in the ascendant power structure in future episodes! Hope you enjoy.

A character I made in Guild Wars 2 has "Toc Dujek" as his surname (a long time ago I made a sand dwelling synapsid species and in their language that means "of Dujek", a city of theirs) and boy oh boy was I ever shooked when someone sent me a message asking if the name was from Malazan. I was definitely not expecting anyone to talk about Malazan in an MMO, dunno why not.

8:00 I would clarify that in point of fact Warrens that weren't innately given to people it was simply a matter of mastering the technique to access the Warren itself. We know this directly because in the first book tattersail explicitly has a mastery over one Warren but has access to multiple. Her Warren mastery is the fire warren but we know that she has access to others just not mastery of one. It's much more common than you state that having access to Warren is achievable. We even see this with even in the first book The puppet we will call him "discovering" the chaos Warren allowing him to be able to traverse all warrens.

9:26 once again I will clarify that it's not physically demanding as they explain tangentially when we're talking about healing magic. Physical and spiritual are linked in a fundamental way in the universe. They go into detail how some of the healing warrens especially the two major ones deal with both the physical and spiritual at the same time linked. And in that same way we can't say that magic itself is physically demanding. It happens on the body the soul and the mind as a unity

Bruh. Mistborn. The Demon Cycle. The Wheel of Time. Storm Bringer (can’t wait for the rhythm of war!!!). But as far as complexities go, this takes the cake. It’s SO hard to follow that after four audio books I had to search up your channel. This has helped. But I still have no idea what’s happening. Your comment about reading this on kindle and making notes sounds like a good idea. I just don’t have that much spare time. Part of me thinks the author went too far. You’re writing for an audience, after all. But I’m going to read through it all. I’m just throughly lost. The spell monger series, on the opposite end of the spectrum, is super easy to follow, but still very entertaining. I’d love someone to meet in the middle. Either way, I’m going to watch every single one of your videos. I’m currently on house of chains. And I hope coaltain (spelling?) comes back. You’re not wrong saying he’s one of the best story arch’s so far. And idk. But I hope toc the younger doesn’t just have a shitty eternity. Idk. Anyway. I’ve subscribed. Thank you for this very niche, yet dedicated channel.

I think this is what I was thinking of from the wiki... “When a Warren bristling with extreme power was being unveiled, a practitioner might experience a warning, like a bitter taste on the tongue for example.” The spicy thing is only divers / soletaken like you said! Although quick Ben is said to smell spicy a few times. He might be soletaken too!
@andrewstrongman305
@andrewstrongman305 4 жыл бұрын
@@IskarJarak Quick Ben seems to be well on the way to ascending in his own right, and he's able to match wits with gods. He can draw on at least eight warrens. I might be wrong, but I seem to remember that the First Empire had a huge ritual that ended in soletaken and d'ivers destroying the empire. I'm not sure that anyone in the time of the story can become soletaken. It was a failed shortcut to ascendency that usually led to madness.

A very good intro to the magic system of Malazan. There's so much ground to cover that being able to explain it all requires a doctorate imo. SPOILER The best thing I think I could add is to specify that the Malazan world is ancient, the amount of history that SE and ICE hint at is staggering. That also comes with as many civilizations and races with each having a different grade of talent or connection to magic while also having a different way of interacting with it, even when they are contemporary to each other. From sacrifices to prayers and everything in between. (I think there are 3 worlds that are talked about also: the one where Malaz is located, the one where the Tiste come from and the one where The Crippled God comes from with infinite ones hinted through the Azath so thats another variable to add) Really enjoy the channel. Tehol for president but keep Bugg out of it he would be better as an assessor, Ublala would be a better ballot companion imo.

Very nice, I didn't know (or more accurately, remember) that Starvald Demelain is the first Warren. Now this explains the cooperation between a certain Elder God and certain flying, fire breathing lizards. By the way I'd like to point out my only 2 complaints about the video, they may help you: 1) Could you add text for all weird words in future videos like you added for the Forkrul Assail Warren? Because I had difficulty hearing some words due to our vastly different pronunciation. Don't know if anyone else has this problem 2) Maybe you'd like to be a bit more cryptic with the spoiler hints because someone reading MoI will easily be able to realize what happens in the end with the Mallet healing spoiler you mentioned. Other than that, very cohesive, informative and funny (that chart) video.

That is a good idea on the text overlays-thank you so much-I know I’m butchering all the names because I don’t do audiobooks so I’m just going with my gut! Fair point in number 2. It would be interesting to see a sort of fanfictiony crossover sort of thing between Myst and Malazan, where the Warrens are entire limbs of Terokh Jeruth, based around paradigmatic concepts such as stasis (ice, Omtose Phellack), stillness/peace/absence (darkness, Kurald Galain, Rashan), energy/action/stimulus (light, fire, Kurald Thyrllan, Tellann, Telas, Thyr, Serc?) and Writing forms Links to worlds within those paradigmatically associated realities. For instance, Edanna from Exile would be on the limb of Terokh Jeruth that would be referred to as Denaeth Rusen, somewhere nearer the branch of Denul than Ruse. It’s concepts being growth and flourishing, and it being dominated by a vast ocean bringing forth life.

I feel like it's a little misleading to say that the warrens are the pathways to access the other realms. From what I understand, the warrens ARE those other realms and the accessing of those realms is just the mage opening a portal to the warren.
@IskarJarak
@IskarJarak 4 жыл бұрын
Fair point. There are definitely other realms/holds/houses that are physical places. I was using “warrens” as the paths that humans use to access those realms. Krul is called the maker of the paths and that’s how mortal humans access magic in the world. There’s some super spoilers we could go into on the source of the warrens and stuff, but essentially, it’s like a personalized gateway that you can access to that other world. It’s just hard to distinguish between the path and the destination for humans whereas elder races were actually from their holds. Not sure if that makes sense, but that’s how I look at it. I so appreciate your comment and apologize that it took me so long to respond-I went off camping for a while recently and left my channel flailing 🤪 much appreciated!
