I was lucky enough to work as au-pair in Malcesine 30 years ago - absolutely beautiful place and the locals were friendly and welcoming. I plan to return in the coming years for a holiday from Australia 🇦🇺

Malcesine belonged only for a short time to Austria-Hungary from 1815 to 1866. Malcesine is also purely Italian-speaking and belongs to the Veneto region and not Trentino. The whole Garda Region ist purely italian-speaking. The Germans you see there are only tourists. Lake Garda is also only 3-4 hours by car from Germany, so it is very easy and quick to reach. In addition, a lot of Dutch and Eastern Europeans especially from the Czech Republic and Poland are vacationing there. Americans and English people are more likely to be seen on Lake Como and Lake Maggiore. The only 2 very well known places that are in Trentino are Torbole and Riva del Garda. About 10% belong to Trentino the northernmost tip, the rest belongs to Veneto (east part), Lombardy (west part of the lake)

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I know this, and know the history... but when we were there we heard mostly German, and were surrounded by German speaking tourists. The shop keepers also spoke it in addition to Italian. We also had the same experience in Riva.

@@hollycaputowanderlust this is because the people adapt to the tourists, as the majority come from germany, in Rome or Florence they tend to adapt to english-speaking tourists. In addition, students in these areas tend to choose German rather than French as their second foreign language. The situation is different in the rest of the country. In school they learn mainly English and then French.

@francescopicanza9573 absolutely! You'll find that in most places.
