2:00 that short exchange is EVERYTHING! Malcom’s neck snap to attention as if his dad just gave him the trigger words that “activated” something familiar and primal in him. The fact that Martin has only ever called him “my boy” as a manipulative and possessive term of endearment. But this is the first time he’s ever said “come on boy!” And said with such urgency and call to action. I whole heartedly believe in Malcoms younger days Martin would use these two phrases for certain responses in his son almost like a Pavlovian bell type of conditioning. Years later it’s not used very much anymore but the conditioning is still very much programmed in Malcoms mind. And Martin knows this. His son has to stab him, and he has to do it now and he turns to a familiar trick. Also on a different note, I don’t believe Martin went to the cabin trip to kill him. I think the cabin trip was a right of passage for Malcom. And a test of mettle for Martin. He wanted to know if Malcom had inherited the “killer” gene and that’s why those memories are the hardest for Malcom to find.

yamagache I thought the same thing when watching this scene. I got so upset at that come on boy because you can tell it was so painful for Malcolm to hear that his father tried to kill him on that trip after all the psychological torment he’d already suffered trying to deal with his devil of a father and the girl in the box and I felt like something broke inside of him when Martin started his dialog of the chloroform losing its efficacy and basically blaming Malcolm for the fact that he was serving a life in prison. He was so defeated in that corner with his mom trying to literally shield him from Martins words and I definitely feel like the “come on boy” brought back some even deeper psychological trauma.

yamagache I also agree about the right of passage, I think Martin said what he said about the trip in that moment to try to rile Malcolm up so that he’d have the courage or rage enough to stab him (Which Martin knew needed to be done)

Sophia Coates Yes! Exactly. Why else would Martin, every episode Malcom brings up the girl in the box, tell him to “YOU should just drop it”, “YOU don’t want to go down that road son” and “trust me YOU’LL want to leave this alone.” He’s not worried about what the world will find out. He’s a killer nothing new there. But if Malcom was somehow involved with the girl in the box (which would make him complicit in the murder) and the traumatic experience was so severe he blocked it all. Well Martins not going to say anything. He may be a psychopath but I truly believe he does care for his boy. For what could be more of an accomplishment to a narcissist then having a child bearing your “perfect DNA”? All he has are these visits and if the police find out Malcom was involved? No more father son time. And he knows it’ll break his boy. He learned a long time ago that his son might be nothing like him in that particular regard, but still fantastically smart with a twisted mind. Sure he’ll keep trying to sway him in little manipulated ways hoping for the shoe to drop but it won’t happen if he’s broken over the memories of the past. This show and the actors play there characters so well!! God I love this show! 😍

I think the scenes in these episodes really prove the people that say Ainsley was "the true heir" all along wrong. For one, clearly Martin has always had an unmatched connection to Malcolm that he doesn't have with anyone else, all his demands are always about Malcolm; coming to see him etc. I won't disagree that he obviously loves them both, and I won't say one more than the other (even though his devotion seems to sway towards his son) since he really believes he's a great father. But the finale showed Ainsley seemingly unaware of what she'd done when she had killed, it wasnt premeditated or out of any sort of emotion, it looked like she blacked out and came to after the deed was done (think Norman Bates in Bates Motel). We've obviously seen her throughout the whole show having very little empathy for a lot of people and issues when it comes to getting ahead in her job- which is ranked very high on the list of jobs psychopaths tend to be drawn to(law enforcement following just behind, I see you, Malcolm 😂), but she never expressed any desire to hurt anyone. Malcom, on the other hand, while clearly completely against the idea, is so attentive to the possibilities for harm around him, and so instantly, that it's impossible to really compare the two. The scene with him and his dad hypothisizing killing each other showed him finding more methods in the room than the actual serial killer in front of him 😂 and in much the same hyper observant way, which suggests he saw them on the way in and already had them stored as potential methods. But he's clearly ashamed of this part of himself, whereas Ainsley isn't when it comes to her drive. I think what I'm trying to say is, while I don't agree with either being the "heir" as far as murder is concerned, the idea that it should have been her that people were keeping an eye on and not Malcolm just doesn't sit right with me since she showed no desire to do anything like what she did in the finale, but Malcolm did. Probably part of the reason Martin and other killers try to push him so hard, because they think he'll crack and bend to his "true calling". Sorry about this rant, I love your videos, just thought about this when I saw that scene again 😂

I've noticed that when Malcolm yells in an angry way, Tom Payne's accent jumps out and for some reason it makes the yelling less uncomfortable because the little accent reminds me that it's not real.
