When radio 2 was worth listening too! Malcolm was a lovely man. Treated disgracefully

The golden days of Radio 2. Very many fond memories of listening Malcolm Laycock. I shall tune into these on KZbin on future Sunday evenings and think back to the good times.

Nothing on BBC radio now for me... 40 years ago you had Alan Dell, Hubert Gregg and later Malcolm Laycock. I wrote in to all the shows at times. I did record the music on cassette tape but not the whole shows like this. Thank goodness for you tube for the British Dance Band music. Thanks for the upload best wishes Brian

Don't forget the wonderful Benny Green too. But you're so right. I can't and haven't been able to listen to Radio 2 for years now.

Totally agree. My late dad and I used to listen every Sunday night at 10 and try to guess the years of the first 3 or 4 songs. I got better at it in time but he was hard to beat - usually spot on! Mind you, he was born in 1920 and was a waiter at the Holborn Restaurant in the 30s and would croon along in the background hoping to be spotted by Bram Martin etc as they played and were recorded! I have dozens of cassettes of these programmes right up to the last! Happy happy days.

If it were not for records from the first half of the 1920s being shared on KZbin many of us wouldn't have any opportunity to hear them at all.

Very true. The mainstream broadcasters think popular music began with The Beatles...

Sunday evenings were not the same after the program changed to avoid the dance-band era, then Malcolm left.

I never knew that story behind Malcolm leaving the show.. I expect the BBC can be very high-handed.

Radio 2 had a new and youngish controller who decided to get rid of inter war dance band records..It was rather sad and depressing end to half decent show from Laycock who left in protest at the changes..Since then l have thought it better to privatise the beeb as minority interests often gave way to larger commercial ones.

Angela Radio from the Isle plays 1930s music. You can hear it on the radio in Portsmouth and the isle of White. It can also be got from the internet as well.
