Awesome thanks for the video, I actually just started to get into creators game recently. The sticks my tribe used are the round ones like in your cover photo of the three men with their sticks It would be the man on the right. I found a guy that makes them so asked if he could make a couple for my brother and I. They are very tricky to use but so much fun to learn, I hope to see much more great videos from you thanks again.

I’d imagine those are a lot harder to use, small pouch for catching, but I’ve only ever seen them in museums. Do your people call it lacrosse or stickball?
@timlopes672 жыл бұрын
@@MalcolmPL Definitely a learning curve on using this style of stick but once I got the hang of it picking up the ball and throwing it is getting smoother lol. what i have learn so far is in anishinaabe it is called baaga'adowewin and in English it's called stickball. Yeah it was hard for me find stuff about it but the game is starting to come back more. The person i found that made my sticks is Max kelsay he is a great stickball maker and is very knowledgeable in the old ways.

Also, the mechanics of lacrosse are very similar to that of atlatl spear throwing. Do you know by any chance if atlatl spears were commonly used by first nations? Maybe the game was invented as some kind of training and when the bow got invented, the weapon got dropped, but the game stuck around? A hypothesis.
@MalcolmPL2 жыл бұрын
Everybody used them at some point, in the great lakes region they stopped being used at some point midway through the first millenium when the bow became a lot more common. As to lacrosse being similar, I thought of this a while ago, but I think the mechanics of the throw are too different. Lacrosse would teach some poor techniques. Also the projectiles behave differently in the air.

Before hearing you mention lacrosse in another video, I never knew it was a Native sport. The word sounds European enough, and Brits played various games like that, especially in the Victorian Era, but perhaps many of the games, which I know, originate from distant cultures.

Would any form of protection been worn by lacrosse players originally prior to the entry of europeans discouraging the use of armor with gunpowder's permeation? Could be a rather significant additional boon of training young men to learn how to properly tie on protective armor to also not get injured in the first place. Wearing armor well is a skill after all. Also I'm pretty certain I've read that down south in Mesoamerica that there was a similar purpose for games there serving as an alternative to war over less serious grievances, such as the Aztec settling grudges or disputes with a game of ball.
@MalcolmPL2 жыл бұрын
No protective equipment, not even much clothing just a breechcloth. Got to run fast, got to shed heat, got to prove that you can take a hit. Got to show off your physique to the ladies. Besides which, I'd imagine wearing armor during a game might encourage some bad behaviour in your opponents. If a check to the arm or leg won't do the trick people will start aiming for the fingers or the knees, the delicate bits that are hard to armour and don't heal nicely. I'd imagine there were some lost martial arts which probably dealt with armour wearing in some specific way.
@wyattw97272 жыл бұрын
@@MalcolmPL Yeah I played hockey as a kid, I could see that with armor. No consequences to physical violence makes it a whole lot of fun. Hell it's like half the reason people play the sport.

So the social role is very similar to that of the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece. During the Olympic Games there was a mandatory ceasefire which was respected up to late Hellenistic times.

@@MalcolmPL Well, it's an opinion piece, after all; more than an authoritatively asserted, culturally relevant, high intellectual quality, broadly agreeable comparison. Negative replies are allowed and corrections are always very warmly welcomed.🤗👍🏻 What would be an acceptable homologous analogy? Or, is Lacrosse just obviously a singularly incomparable athletic & cultural/tribal/racial endeavor? Would it be proper to say: "Field Hockey, with baskety carry-nets and less hooking"?
