My female Jack Russell (not full blood, she's also 1/2 Mountain Cur and has the Cur brindle coloring) is very much an Alpha female. When the neighbor dogs come over she is usually very...how should I describe this...she likes to be the leader in their playtime (Which is pretty funny when I'm watching her take the lead away from our neighbors huge Malamute who's very passive and chill, when she comes over to play). And she's even like that with me and mom. It's usually her that will bring us her toys and initiates play. And when she's done, she's done. Is their any difference between their prey drive as far as which one has a bigger prey drive? Cocoa is very prey driven. She is always outside chasing birds, squirrels, moles, rats etc and killing them and then bringing them to me to brag about it (and I do mean brag. She'll come over to me, lay whatever animal she got ahold of beside my chair, put her paw on my leg, look at me and grin and the trot proudly and happily out the door 🤣. She's currently outside because she treed a skunk and got sprayed and my mom won't give her a bath; I would but I'm disabled and she doesn't have a leash or harness)

I have a female and she barks at stray dogs and wants to fight them, but at the beginning of the year we finally allowed our other female dog to interact with her and they became best friends and so playful. We were afraid they wouldn't get along because of the way our jack Russell is and our other female is a dogo argentino.

Sadly our girl Layla crossed the rainbow bridge Monday. She was the sweetest most loyal dog. She was definitely stubborn at times, however she protected us and our space always with her territorial nature. She was definitely the alpha. We had a two year old male yellow Labrador when we adopted her as a puppy and from day one she was in charge of him. They were best friends. We miss them both terribly. They brought us so much joy. My Lab died on Tuesday of a broken heart I think. 💔 It’s been a rough week. Your videos are really helping me heal. Thank you for all your content and sharing your sweet girl with us. ❤

My fifteen year old Jack Russell wants to go everywhere with me. She still chases squirrels and puts her nose to the ground to track a rabbit. It changes her demeanor to a hunter mode. She gets that hunting bark and starts tracking with energy. I love to see that she still has that Jack Russell spirit.

I have a male JRT, and he is indeed clingy and owner-oriented, apart from the times when he senses there's some kind of exciting adventure ahead - then he becomes more independent, but always checking out if I'm still there watching his escapades. He's also really friendly and playful with all animals, including stray cats, letting them slap him if they wish and seeing it as some kind of fun interaction :) As for dominance, he's more of a diplomat, carefully assessing the situation and never picking fights he can avoid, but also extremely brave with huge dogs or angry dogs - he just tries to show calming signals and wait until the dog gets to like him, almost never giving up. He might be a bit too assertive in his desire to play, but tries to restrain himself when dealing with nervous, elderly or ill dogs, often being the only friend for local blind or traumatised dogs. However, he can definitely stand up for himself if he sees that he's got a worthy opponent of comparable strength

Daisy, our cherished 11y old female is clingy, territorial, very alpha and an excellent hunter. She's also the sweetest cuddler if she's not in protection\hunter mode. Not to mention, she will run young dogs ragged at the dog park. Truly special. I never thought I could love an animal this much.

I have a +- 12 year old JR female. I got her at a shelter where she ended with a litter of puppies (that the shelter had already found homes for). They guessed she was two years old- confirmed by my vet. She was extraordinary from day 1. She walked perfectly off leash. Followed me like my shadow. She would come back even if chasing a rabbit or a squirrel. She ignored my 15 year old female maltese, played with my 2 year old GS male. We live in the countryside so no neighbors - first time we had a visitor over, we discovered another side to our JR. She hates everyone not in our immediate family.

I actually have/had the opposite experience. I had 4 jacks, 2 are still alive. 2 male and 2 females. Both male dogs were much more distant and independent than the females. One of the females was extremely unique. She just wanted to play, totally obsessed with the ball, liked to hug, loved to sleep on my tummy in front of the TV. She was the sweetest dog ever, a real sweetheart. I remember she could stand with her 4 paws on one hand when she was little. It's almost 3 years now and I still miss her. The other female I still have is actually her daughter. She's also a sweetheart, but she's a total couch potato :D. The daughter was more playful when she was younger and liked to playfight with her dad. But now she's nearing 15 and she has this Lethal Weapon " i'm too old for this shit" attitude when it comes to playing. But when I walk her, she gets into hunt modus. Tail up and nose on the ground the entire walk. Of the males only 1 was playful, but both of them hated anything that was not our family. Even though all of them were raised with cats in the house and they got along with them, a different cat in the garden would make them go batshit crazy. But again the females less so. In my case the females had more a live and let live attitude when it came to other dogs and animals. As long as no other dog or animal bothered them, they didn't care. They would just straight up ignore other dogs. I remember once a bird flew into our chimney and my mom just lit the fire. So I hastily opened up the fire place and the bird jumped out. There stood my 2 females, the 1 male just died and we didn't have the other boy yet. Both of them just watched that bird like it was normal. Of course I was there, so I don't know what would've happened without me... But for a moment when I opened up the fireplace and i saw the bird jump out. And for a split second I thought, oh boy, this is gonna be a bloodbath. Because both girls were very young and very athletic. Maybe they saw the bird was in distress and because of the smoke, he was kind of douzed and didn't have the energy to panic. I guess that helped alot. Talking of birds. My latest male actually killed a blue bird. He jumped and caught it mid air. Shook it once with his head and the bird was dead. After it was dead, he was like. Job is done, NEXT! Didn't play or try to eat it. Just it was on his turf and birds annoy him :D So male or female. I don't know. My guess is more that dogs are born with a certain character. You can train and bend them or guide them a certain way. But some are just more hardwired to do certain stuff.

I have a 3yr old jac-chi, she's very much a clingy lap dog and has mid-range separation anxiety and is in my room when both my daughter gone. She's not friendly with women but will warm up with frequent visits, she's not been around children and doesn't care to be. I want to believe she wouldn't bite but scared dogs are unpredictable and Sissy has lots of teeth she's happy to show. She likes her toys and prefers you to play too. Right at this moment we are whelping and hopefully we have babies by. Tomorrow

Had a male Jack Russell for 18 years and he was very alpha when it came to the house and protecting his owners. Outside the house he was incredibly sociable and all the local kids loved him, he'd often run over and steal the soccer ball, then start playing. He was incrediblly loyal, not really needy and didn't always need to follow, but he was great company and always interested in what the family were doing. Sadly he passed away some years back and it has taken me a long time to be ready to get another dog. We got a male Jack Russell called Jasper just 3 weeks ago. He's 11 weeks old, a bit wild and crazy but incredibly affectionate with the family already. He is very sociable but also very needy which I expected as a pup. Oh and he hates cats, from the moment he first saw one he knew that they were the enemy. 😂🤣 We have two lovely cats so we are keeping them apart and just making a very gentle introduction whilst he is on a lead. If they see each other every day for months, get used to the sounds and smells then I think that is half the battle.

My male JRT was the opposite of clingy. I would take him on long hikes in the American northwest along with my Chihuahua. The female Chihuahua stayed with me really well, but the male JRT was much more independent and fearless and didn't mind wandering off in the wilderness hundreds of miles from any town. And when camped in places with other campers, the male JRT would frequently wander off to other campsites looking for food. He eventually wandered off from my house and was lost to the local humane society. He was chipped by a previous owner, and I wasn't going to pay for rabies shots and all that so I have no clue where he is now. I miss him and loved his personality. These are great dogs for hiking long treks but not as good as the Chihuahua. Their hips wear out after about 15 miles and you need to carry them. My Chihuahua never had any issues keeping up, except for the heat in summer and she was a dark dog and needed water. Point is, these small, energetic breeds are best hiking companions in regions where you must cross rivers or streams and are hiking long distances. You can carry them across the water. With a larger athletic dog you are screwed.

I have had both female and now a male JRT. Both are/were extremely intelligent and active. Both were wonderful and protective family dogs; however, my male was even more affectionate and clingy than my female. He is also more “ripped” in his musculature and about 2.5 pounds heavier than his female counterpart. Neither were fond of tiny children, but the male is more tolerant of noxious stimuli. I have many dog breeds from purebreds to mutts. JRTs are my favorite. Huge dogs in small bodies with equally large affectionate hearts. ❤

Just my opinion, Jack Russell Terriers are one of the best English breed dogs to own. You won't be disappointed. They are very energetic and highly intelligent. You can have a lot of fun in parks and beaches. My dog knows how to swim, and no one taught him that. They can be little rascals and steal your food if you if don't keep an eye on them. They react really innocent and cute to avoid being disciplined for being naughty. My furry Buddy passed away however at the age of 15.

She's definitely a cuddle! She's very small as I am used to bulky breeds and Goldens. I've had 2 other smaller breed rescues but none as little as she is. I am afraid of picking her up sometimes. She also appears nervous about being picked up. Is there a "right" way of picking her up. My husband won't even attempt to pick her up

Especially cold winter days extra body heat to keep me warm. I like this video I got to learn about female JRT’s. Everything else I’m positive applies to both genders hyper will chase anything even a leaf blowing in the wind haha and very very intelligent. I had a female JRT similar in color and built to your girl. She lived to 15 years old. She was the Alpha dog, territorial, very sociable, and friendly. Loyalty was an issue. She'd hang with anybody that had food. She was very independent. My male shorty -JRT - black and white with some brown coloring is 4 months old. He's very active, highly intelligent, motivate to please, trainable - compared to the female. He will follow our puggle or me around, and doesn't like to be by himself alone. He's much more affectionate than the female. He also is picking up potty training much more easily. I'd take both equally without preference.

So true, the female is more alpha. I have a brother and sister. Sister is the alpha and leads her dog pack. The male is happy to follow along. He IS more clingy and more verbal. Remy (the girl) definitely more territorial. Both are fixed. OH the edit, I forgot to say that she so much smaller than the male Jax. He is way bigger and almost has a Pit face and hers is more delicate. Same litter. It's amazing how different they are.

I have had JRTs for over 18 years, both male & female, including having had 3 females in the home at the same time. I absolutely love the breed, their superior intelligence, spunky attitude and seemingly human like understanding, perception ability and reactions/expression. It's essential to begin socialization early on as puppies because once they reach adult maturity you can't change their mindset about specific matters; although you can change/modify some behaviors (reactions) through proper training and consistency, they will always feel the same internally regarding a specific situation (unfamiliar household guests, other dogs, resource guarding, etc.) and will frequently revert to their previous response, requiring re-training. Something to keep in mind most people are unaware of regarding females is that they frequently become more aggressive after they have been spayed. Don't misunderstand, I am all for spaying/neutering pets and all of mine have been spayed/neutered after they have reached maturity (after 18 months of age because they need the hormones secreted by their reproductive organs to lessen the chance of getting certain cancers and chronic diseases), but it is absolutely true that females do become progressively more aggressive as they age after being spayed. I have experience this myself, as have many other JRT owners and it has been noted in veterinarian journals as well. Just something to keep in mind when choosing which sex you may prefer.

My female JRT is extremely independent and a complete alpha. Definitely not clingy and NOT a lap dog, but shows her affection in other ways. Most things people have said about JRTs I’ve found to be true, she is intelligent almost to a fault, absolutely fearless and has squared up against everything from moose to bears while hiking in Colorado. She’s an absolute muscular tank and is all business when she’s outside off leash, and is ALWAYS on the hunt.

Love your videos! Our Jackchi is 2 years old. He’s smart and stubborn and a little lovebug. I’d say he’s less clingy than Luna, lol. He can chill on the couch for long stretches or snuggle with his big (60 lb) sister. It was interesting reading about the boy’s builds being stockier. Nugget is 15 pounds and kind of tall looking to me. I wonder if there’s another breed there-we did adopt him from a rescue. He loves to sleep under the covers. He’s extremely territorial. So much so that I finally took him to dog school. Smart move. I was doubting his smarts but he is super smart & stubborn. But, school teaches us how to work with the stubborn streak. I have physical limitations and he doesn’t get as much exercise as he’d like. But, car rides seem to help ease his need for adventure and backyard sprints help get energy out. Let’s see. He’s not a picky eater. He is finally finding his voice and starting to talk & howl more. So cute!

UK here. I have a male Parson RussellTerrier (PRT) of 5 years, and a female of 10 months. They are Uncle and Niece, but are quite different. Both wonderful, truly wonderful. Every dog will be different, just make them confident in the world by early exposure to everything, gently with encouragement. Livestock, traffic, plastic sheets blowing in the wind, and people / dogs of course! No dog is perfectly behaved so cut yourself some slack too, just watch for signs and patterns. A certain breed of dog that had a pop at them when young, a certain place that scared them, DPD delivery drivers (the male has an issue until he says hello). The female we have is very small compared to the male but tries to dominate him all the time. He tries to put her in her place but can’t go as far as making her squeal even! He puts up with a lot of crap but we reassure him if he fights back. Mostly it is play but she is really annoying sometimes so we let her know that’s not on. The male was a lively boy and well socialised up at 18 months suddenly left his precious ball (our training secret) to dominate another dog by gripping its back and humping. The owner freaked out, as did I coz he’d never shown a sign of that. No harm done, it wasn’t aggression just dominance. Gripping with teeth but no mark - but his balls had to go. Best move ever - we can trust him everywhere and when off the street he is off the lead. Happy us, happy boy. The little lady has never shown fear or aggression to any dog or human. She certainly isn’t scared of our boy either. Generally she is easier so far, but she has a role model and a ready play mate. Her first season was pretty easy (dog pants help in the house) but we were careful outdoors with other dogs in case Uncle got protective. Our experience is they are different up neither is more trouble, it is likely to be your behaviour or lack of training that is the problem. The one exception is male castration - experienced, quality breeders will tell you often it is in the dogs best interests to have a happy and fulfilled life. I did it with a heavy heart as we’d love have bred from him but I have no regrets. We have saying in this house when we see them both crashed out on the sofa/chair/floor in the evening - we’ve done our job. If you don’t do your job they’ll let you know, if you do they are a pleasure. Walking a dog whilst chatting on the phone etc. ? Choose another breed, JRT /PRT will mess you up. Want a dog to get face to face with, tug play, chase ball, physically wrestle with, play fight, then cuddle on the sofa and squash up to you on the bed? Go for it !

My female is a dead ringer for Luna except for the brown markings on her head. She's very protective and extremely territorial especially when it comes to our mobility scooter that she rides on when we cross busy roads. She's very sleek looking and athletic a good looking dog and I watch her diet so that she doesn't get overweight. Very obedient she obeys commands immediately I don't have to repeat myself she's a joy to be with in public.

I have 2.5 year old male that's 11.5 lbs. My first JRT. He's very mellow and gets along well with my female mutts. He doesn't bark much or have an attitude, nor is he stubborn. We run 3 miles a day on weekdays and 5 miles on weekends. He sleeps at the foot of the bed and is not very clingy. Maybe mine is not "normal," but he's my little dude.

We have a male Jack Russell who came from our local rescue centre when he was just over a year old (they guessed). I wouldn't say he was clingy, he just wants to be our companion in all we do. To that end, he loves travelling - by car, train, bus. Loves caravanning too, and is less territorial then.

My female JRT is definitely asserting some dominance, especially now that she's in heat. She is not listening well and her recall is much worse. Kind of struggling in this department- any pointers would be appreciated. I'm not planning on getting her fixed as of now. She is very good with other dogs and with people.

I have had 1 female and 2 males over 25 years. Not certified JRT but obvious JRT look. My first girl guarded me as a resource- it had it’s pros and cons. My 2nd boy was a corgi cross rescue and has the biggest personality. Everyone fell in love with him. Mt 21 months Stormie is highly intelligent and I take him to obedience classes and am constantly looking for things to teach him. He needs his brain occupied, his body exercised (flat out runs next to my bike or chasing a ball/other dogs), and socialising. He is not good at being home alone though. Since my elderly boy Opie passed in Feb (Stormie was 17 months) he has struggled to settle at home and is hyper focused on me. So much so that he stares at the doors I may enter through and doesn’t relax. Have tried everything- all the usual separation anxiety training- treats in puzzles, radio, starting slow etc etc. whilst adjusting to life without Opie we have stayed at my cousin’s a lot (2 young dogs- kelpieX and Cavoodle)…. He seems to need a canine mate but 2 dogs is so much work on my own!! He has Tenterfield terrier in him, and is the most attentive obedient pup I have had. He is a joy to train. A little anxious around tall men and people that say hello and lean over him…. He is a cute pup and people can’t help themselves!!

I've had 2 females. Our first was pretty independent and only wanted cuddling on her terms. The one we have now is extremely affectionate, like Luna. So I suppose it may be a dog personality thing. Thanks for sharing Luna's weight. Our first one ping ponged from 18 to 20. The one we have now is 24, and although she's not fat at all, it got me worried that she was over 20 lbs. Is that normal?

As someone who had both a female and male jack Russell (sadly both passed) and yeah, their personalities where vastly different. My female jack Russell was kind, gentle and was well behaved. She was also "protective" but would sleep in shifts in my parents room and then my room. My male dog was extremely hyper, loved to play and was unfortunately protective. After we got him fixed, that last part wasn't a problem.

I have a female Jack Russell & everything you just said held so very true to my dog! Now I do have a kind of embarrassing question to ask other owners of female JR terriers but I'm wondering if your dogs even when spayed like mine is wondering if your female JR terriers try to hump your male friends or your friends male dogs? I got this dog from my ex husband we had separated and when he moved out I kept our female choc lab/English Mastiff dog, so he got this Jack Russell! well because we were still trying to work on marriage, he & her still would stay at our house once & awhile well she kept trying to get up on him & he'd push her away! I told him to stop being mean to her & he said that she needed to learn she wasn't going to hump his back! I told him he crazy & thst not what she doing! Well we ended up getting divorced! Then a few years later I had to have my lab/Mastiff put down he had moved out of town leaving this JR w/his dad so I asked if I could have her since other dog was put down and he said yes! It was then that I realized he wasn't making that shit up! Even though she fixed she tries humping all my male friends! It gets rather embarrassing! Just wondering if anyone else's FEMALE JR terriers does this too or is it just mine that does this embarrassing act?

I have a female Jack Russell and she turned 14 this past June 2024. I have owned dogs my entire life and I am 80 years old. In general, it's my experience is that females are more likely to stay near home, whereas males may look for a mate when females are in season. I was warned that Jack Russells need lots of exercise and because of my age, I shouldn't get a Jack. 14 years ago I found her at the animal shelter and stopped by the vet on my way home. The Vet estimated her age to be 4 months old based on the fact that she still had some of her baby teeth. On day one she was eager to please and brought me 6 shoes one at a time and I rewarded her each time. On day two I bought 10 frisbees and with no training from me as I threw these frisbees she chased and sometimes caught and brought back each. She became a big hit with the neighbor kids when I allowed them to throw the frisbees. She was full of energy back then, these days if I throw one she will go and get it but she won't bring it back. old age will do that to you. She follows me everywhere and that is okay with me.

My Jack Russel is about 5 now and she is CLINGY. Bad separation anxiety and has to be with me at all times when I'm in the house lol. Definitely 100% accurate on the dominance too. She has to be the boss if any other dogs are around, especially bigger ones 😂

My male JR is now 15 months old. Highly intelligent, very jealous. Loving, playful and full of energy. Very protective. He is super spoiled and loved. However, more stubborn than the 2 female JRs we had previously. They were super obedient. Maybe this one is influenced by big brother dachshund cross, who simply ignores me flat when he feels like it... bad influence...

I was advised by the vet to have my boy nuetered at about 6 or 7months old for that and other reasons. It also stops aggressive behavior, the desire to wander and prostate cancer in the latter years...... He, Archie, is a delightful 7month old pup. I am so very loved....!!!!

@Karen Newton my vet has 4 JRT's currently and has had others in the past, she recommended we wait until Willie is 3-4 years old, so that's what I've waited on. He has gotten better about it recently. I think he was stressed about some household changes with one of my adult daughters moving back home.

I can confirm, since I grew up with a male and female Jack, males are more clingy than females. Our female did not like to cuddle unless it was her chose which was rare. Our male LOVED to cuddle and wanted to be with someone all the time and did not like it when we left the house.

My late female wanted to be in the middle of everything. Loved attention. Very smart and liked to do all her "tricks". I worked with her A LOT from the beginning. She did food and sofa guard, so she was best not allowed on the sofa on her own. No bones or other chew items, as she seemed to undergo brain change. She was territorial if workmen crossed her little yard. Hated her nails trimmed!!! She was 12 lbs, smooth coated. Had many health issues. Legg Perthe surgery at age one year and patella issues. Lived to age 15. I miss her.

We have now had two Jack Russell’s and they are like chalk and cheese the first didn’t have a bad bone in his body was so loyal and loving had no aggression to anything. We now have a year and a half Jack Russell he is so different and has been challenging he is quite nervous but very dominant in the house he actually was growling at us etc and bit my wife in two occasions we got a behaviourist in and he is now much better dissent growl any more and accepts he has to do what he is told. He is strange though and not very affectionate as are last one was . He suffers from startle reflex if he’s asleep under your feet and you don’t notice he goes for your feet . He is always following me everywhere and is great on walks. We do miss our old affectionate and predictable Jack Russell but are hoping as he gets a bit older he will soften a bit . Anyone else had issues like this?

You actually summed up everything that there is to know about our little monsters. My girls are much more independent why the middle child, the boy is worse that “Cling-Wrap”. He insists on touching the back of my legs when he first gets up in the morning. I cannot move while at my desk because he gets in the knee space, flips over on his back and proceeds to stink up the air while he snores. My oldest female was food aggressive. My youngest daughter also maintains her independence.

I just lost my 15.5 yr old Female JRT, Missy on 8/30/24. Her brother/husband, (bruzband) JRT, Jack was 14 when we lost him in 2021. Both completely different personalities. Both complementary to each other. Jack was great with all animals and would chase deer for over an hour before returning home. He helped herd chickens and goats too! Whereas, Missy hated cats (killed 1), lizards, snakes, rodents, flying birds, and strange dogs. She was great with people and accepted everyone without hesitation. She hated to travel and often hyperventilated and sought the smallest & tightest place to hide. Prescription meds caused internal bleeding so she got high instead with medicinals formulated for her. I miss them both in ways that are indescribable. A bind with a JRT is unlike any of the previous vreeds I've raised and loved. Huskies, Malamutes, GSD, Rotties, Wolf hybrids, Labs, Aussie Shepherds, Yorkies, Belgian Shepherds, Greyhounds, Whippets, all great breeds but nothing remotely close to a JRT. Hands down one of the top breeds! Sorry for your loss. You'll have a lifetime of love and memories to fall back on knowing that you were loved by them and they by you. 🥰
