I always thought it sounded like a tractor trying to start

When I would hear it by my parents house in the woods I would think it was a four wheeler and I would get paranoid. My dad finally told me what it was

My parents lived in Bland Virginia and I’d spend a lot of time in the forest there looking for bones and exploring. I’d always hear this motor sound like a generator. I immediately thought it was someone cooking moonshine or meth in the woods. When I’d walk towards this motor sound there’d always be nothing there and it would stop. It was the strangest thing. This happened at least six times. So a few years later I get the idea to Google “strange motor sound in woods” and this bird called a grouse kept coming up so I KZbin searched it and that was the sound!!! I never would have thought it was a bird because the only thing it sounded like was man-made in everything I knew about nature at the time. So fascinating and cool to have my years long mystery final solved. And I learned I wasn’t crazy and the sound was very much real. Lol

I kept hearing this towards the lake south of my property. I thought it was a generator at once of the lake houses. When I started seeing a grouse under my bird feeder in the winter I started watching videos about them. Finally knew what the generator noise was.

Do they do that at night, too; and, louder than the roar of a mountain "white-water" river? And, will you hear more than one in an area... competitions? Or, only one? Otherwise, what I heard sounded huge, and he intended to make it clear, he didn't appreciate me tracking him, and that I had become aware of him.

I took a train once through Manitoba and couldn't help but notice how many grouse were hanging out near the tracks. Do they hear the low chug of the diesel and think it's competition? One even came toward the train, spooked himself, and then crashed into a tree when he jumped 180.

The first time I heard this noise I thought someone had a 4 track that wouldn't start, then I thought it was a moose in the woods.. ..I can't believe it's a small bird.

I first heard grouses the morning after a solo camping trip in Oregon. I had no idea that it was a bird making those sounds. That camping trip still is such a fond memory

Recently a grouse moved into my yard and it's been doing this right next to my room for weeks now lol It used to annoy me until I found out it was coming from a cute little birdie, I love birds too much to be annoyed by it anymore 😭❤

I am lakeside in British Columbia near Kamloops and I can hear one right now.. I knew of Grouse already but this particular bird has a very deep sound. Glad you solved the mystery.

We had a house in the woods, 20 acres next to a state forest. I used to hear what I always thought was a motorcycle someone was trying to start. I used to say buddy, give it up, that bike is NOT going to keep running. One day I realized -wait - this is happening too often! So I googled and found out!

The video doesn't quite do the sound justice! The drumming really carries a long distance, especially near lakes. I remember the first time I ever heard drumming decades ago I thought somebodies boat wouldn't start haha. I was immediately enchanted. Grouse are one of my favorite birds.

Agree. While near them drumming, one can actually feel the waves of energy, besides the sound.
