So I am in the process of adopting a 12 year old male eclectus. He's actually here with me right now as we do a 1 week trial to see how we both do together. He is the chillest bird I have ever met. He's very social in that he wants to be where the people are, but he's content just being in their presence. He isn't "needy". The other very social aspect to him is that he loves to eat with people. It's how he was raised. He gets on the table and will eat with his humans. He doesn't like to eat alone. That's fine with me because it will force me to eat more vegetables and other healthy foods because he likes to eat off of your plate too. LOL One thing I will say is that the way we've been doing this adoption process has been amazing. I went to visit him at his owner's house 3 times and then he came to my house twice before this week. He got used to me and then got used to my house. He was dropped off yesterday for the week, and was only nervous and standoff-ish for the first 2 hours. After that, he became very social with me, ate with me, and eagerly steps up on my hand without having to say anything. Because we've done this processes so gradually, the transition has been as smooth as butter. Best of all...since they're not 1 person birds, his current owner has offered to bird-sit him when I go on vacations. They're lifestyle is changing which is why they need to rehome him, but we've become friends through this and it's a win-win situation for both of us. I'm very excited for him to become a permanent member of my family!

We have an eclectus male and female. The male is scary smart. He'll take words that he's heard weeks apart, and figures out how to use them in context. Very often when my wife asks me a question, Charlie will answer for me, correctly. The male and female will sit on the arm of the chair and take food from the edge of the table , but not get on the table. The female has never talked. She is the older of the two. They are both very loving, and will ride on my shoulders when we go out shopping at stores. They love to go shopping with my wife and I, and are very well behaved. Love my eclectus parrots, as well as my macaws, and my Malaccan Cocatoo (he is a Registered PTSD Service animal, and a Great bird ambassador). All of my birds are well behaved when we go out shopping or to a Starbucks for a coffee.

I’ve never had a female Eclectus but I’ve had two males. Both were absolute dream birds. I agree that they can be perch potatoes. The just like to soak in their surroundings and observe life. Very true about being slow eaters. My first boy absolutely HATED my husband for some reason but loved me and my daughters. My boy now loves everyone. He loves to inspect anyone he’s with, specifically he loves to make eye contact for a VERY long time😂. He’s such a good boy. I don’t think I’d ever get a female even though they are so beautiful. My biggest fear is egg binding.

So this year we went into the shop to buy a male eclectus because that’s what the internet told us to do (lol). We walked out of there with Ruby, our female eclectus! And it’s honestly been the best decision we’ve ever made. She is so gentle sweet and perfect. We have a big family so Ruby fits right in and gets along with everyone. I know that there is a stigma between male and female eckkies but if you’re ever considering getting one make sure no matter the gender you have a genuine connection with the bird. Ruby was the only parrot in the entire shop interacting with us and that’s made the world of difference in bringing her in as a family member. The guy at the shop also made a very valid point when we said we wanted a male eckkie only and that was that female eckkies make great pets too if they’re given the same level of love and affection. Other people may have a different experience but again I just believe it depends on the individual birds personality as well.

I have had a couple of both, male and female over the years. I think the females are very misunderstood! Females can be incredibly loving based on the person raising then, and the attention they get. In my family, we love both. I wish people would stop saying all the negative things about the Females! It makes people not want them. And we whole heartedly believe people are missing out on some wonderful birds! Of course we also think male Eclectus are wonderful too!

I have 2 females and 1 boy. My 2 girls are my favorites. I find it’s my boy that has hectic mood swings. He’s a little green monster. One minute he’s all sweet, loving and gentle, then he’s trying to hump everything, then he’s as moody as hell and will growl and bite out of the blue. He is 50% of the time a sweet loving boy, and 50% green dragon. My girls are 80% of the time sweet and even tempered and 20% of the time either aloof or grumpy. Both my girls are mostly even tempered, gentle sweethearts. They are sweet, loving and playful. They never have hectic mood swings. My girls love being near me and like to sit on me in the evenings while we watch TV before bedtime. They like training and are a lot more playful than the boy. My girls talk a lot better than my boy as well. My boy definitely flies better. My girls are couch potatoes. The boy is also very aggressive to the girls. My girls were very quiet and happy to just sit until about 11 months of age. Only then did they become more interactive with their toys and become more interested in training. My boy gets 13 to 14 hours sleep. The girls get 11 to 12 hours sleep. They have a health fresh veg diet with limited fats.

Also one thing to note: do not.. and I repeat do NOT just put a male and female together in the same cage when you do not want to breed them. Females can get extremely territorial and a fight will almost certainly occur. Also the females can starve a male by not letting them approach their food. They are quite difficult to keep together.

My female is different... 😮 I have a 7 months old female Eclectus parrot. Sadly she is disabled (her left leg is kind of a stump) because of an accident where she got stepped on when she was a baby 😞Because of this her first owner did not want her anymore and did not bother to go to the vet. I took her in and spent the entire first day with her. She discovered her favourite treat which is mango! Which was also the first thing she learned to eat after her baby bird formula. She often cuddled up against me by herself and we watched the movie RIO. Eclectus parrots make this adorable, sweet noise when they get sleepy btw. I think most owners are familiar with this 😊 Months have passed... I got her checked at the vet. She learned how to climb and fly which are the things she loves to do most next to destroying every single toy. She can handle being by herself, but often chooses to spend time with me rather then sitting somewhere in the house. She watched this video together with me as well 😉

Thank you for doing eclectus videos! I have a female ecky and have many thoughts about this topic :) A lot of what you raised about 'nature' is correct: eclectus parrots nest in hollows, and quality tree hollows are hard to come by, so the females fiercely protect their hollow. This does lead to 'nesty' behaviour in captivity, and means females are more likely to show aggression than males in captivity, because in the wild, they are the boss and they have to be fierce! I have also not come across a free-flight trainer who will train female eckies - their belief is that the females are hard-wired to find a hollow, so there is more risk of the females not being recalled home. I haven't experienced this first-hand but I can understand the logic. But, males are also prone to hormonal issues. Theirs are less linked to aggression towards others and are more linked to hypersexuality in captivity and self-mutilating behaviours. Basically their hormones aren't able to be 'switched off' in captivity in the way that it happens in the wild. There's a really interesting video on that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4naZHV6f56IaLs&ab_channel=BirdHealth The 'free love' non-monogamous nature of eclectus parrots is also true, and a big part of why we chose the species as a pet in captivity. My female ecky has great relationships with both myself and my partner, and also loves meeting new people (and pets) and interacting with them. So she's a great, sociable pet to have, and we can both take care of her (no 'one-person bird' issue). BUT - I disagree that female eckies are less 'friendly'. A lot of this comes down to nurture! Our girl was handraised by a reputable breeder and socialised to enjoy human contact and interaction. Our girl loves to hang out with us, she loves to train, and she is SO playful with all kinds of toys. We started training at about 6 months old and she really enjoys it, understands it, and excels at it. She loves to play ON us (which can be cute and annoying!). She can comfortably spend time on her own, and does, but generally her preference is to be with her humans. She cuddles up on us every single night for snuggles and snoozes. She also talks up a storm (her bird-dad is a prolific talker, so it's likely she inherited that from him). She is also very gentle - even a vet commented on this who had eckies as pets herself. In my experience, female eckies and female parrots in general get a bad rap! I think humans tend to overgeneralise individual behaviours as gendered or species behaviours. Yes, there are some immutable natural impulses that we are working with. But so, so much comes down to nurture - how the parrot was raised, and how we respond to their behaviour, including hormonal behaviour. If raised well, female eclectus parrots make beautiful companion birds. I have never had such a clear and lovely connection with a pet as I do with my female ecky. Sorry for the essay, and thank you again for the video!

Visually, I like the appearance of both. The males have a "mango" beak, which is very interesting since most parrots have dark or tan beaks. But the female's contrasting colours or red and indigo are a huge eye catcher too! Fun Fact: When the eclectus was first discovered by man, people thought the males and females were two entirely different species due to their surprising sexual dimorphism!

I've always wanted to rescue a female eclectus parrot. I went to a gardening store once and outside they had a blue and gold macaw, and a female eclectus. The macaw is allowed out of the cage and sits on a playstand outside. it's fully flighted, but never flies away for some reason. whenever you walk past she lunges at you, it must be from people provoking her over time. her feather quality isn't really great and her diet is just seeds. And then the eclectus is in a pretty small cage for its size, and an awkwardly shaped one too. She had a ROPE toy that was all frayed, her cage was super dirty and she only had seeds to eat.. which is awful! She looked super sad, and her eyes had emotion in them, it's hard to explain but I just felt super connected! I so want to go back and steal her from there and give her a better home🥺 Whenever you walked past she would say "hello" in this super cute voice, but only when you weren't looking! She was so so beautiful, I feel so bad for her :( * I feel bad for the macaw too but the eclectus I just felt more connected to somehow- her eyes!

Start investigating getting her. Strike up a conversation with whomever owns her if you can, and learn as much as you can. If you don't think they will give her to someone, and Eclectus are expensive so they probably won't, start saving your pennies. Most everything and everyone has a price, not to be crass, but that's life. Make them an offer, cash. If they decline, make a higher one. Between making higher offers let it ride for a while, months if need be. Let them think about the money they could have in their pocket. You may need to ultimately be in a position where you can offer more than she is technically worth in case they are jerks. If you want her and you think she would be happy with you, *get* her. Go after her. They live 50 years, she's probably not going anywhere.

Pua (female ekkie) randomly showed up on our property 3 years ago. Our best guess is someone didnt want her anymore and just let her go (thats what a local bird sanctuary lady told us lots of people do this). Which is terrible as she was very hungry and thirsty. I never expected to see both of my favorite colors on my favorite kind of critter. So i took her in and did my homework on her (she was toe tapping and figured out how to correct it and such) got her on the feeding system and she is basically my little buddy. She loves to just chill and hang out. Got her doing a few tricks. Loves to shower with me. I take her to town when i can to socialize her and let her see different things (she does get a bit carsick). All in all she has been a pretty good little bird. My cousin said that it was meant to be.

I have had my female Eclectus for 16 years, she was young when I got her. I chose her right after she hatched and I was shown pictures and video of her until she was old enough to come home with me. The breeder hand fed her and she was completely independent eating when she came to me. The breeder also taught her to step up. So that is where she was at when I got her. She is extremely chill. I do not have a male Eclectus, but I do have a male Indian Ringneck, and my God, their personalities could not be more different. He is incredibly high strung. I say that my Eclectus just likes to watch the world go by. She doesn't fly. She did not fly when I got her and she just never learned, her attempts to learn were frankly, scary. She would flutter to the floor with such a thud, I was worried she would get hurt, and did not really know how to teach her. No You Tube back then lol. She is only slightly better about controlling landings now, I really try to keep her from attempting them. She makes it known when she wants to be moved from place to place, she gives me a certain look and I know she is ready to move, and I go get her. If I am out of the room or not fast enough, she will flutter to the floor and come find me to pick her up. I have a rat terrier that follows me everywhere, and a few times I will be looking around for Julie (the Eclectus) and realize that at some point she joined up with the dog, and is also following me around. My Ringneck flies all over and has been known to bring her interesting things he finds around the house, or food that he has gotten from me. In that way I suppose she gets a taste of males bringing her things, like in the wild. It's funny you should mention the feather destruction. My Ringneck, who is 17, began feather plucking when I got very sick and was unable to care for them. I had severe complications from surgery (bone infection) and I was bedbound for nearly 6 months. So my husband fed them and cleaned their cages. But there was no time out of the cage for them, no rotation of toys really. My husband was working long hours and had a desperately sick wife, I think he did the best he could. The Ringneck grew very quiet, even though I tried to still talk and sing to them from across the room. By the time I could move around again, he had developed full blown feather destruction. And he never stopped. He looks like a tiny plucked chicken, the vet has ruled out other health issues. Getting back to the Eclectus, she was fine. She just hung out in her cage, still watching the world go by. I could see no obvious behavior changes in her. She is defensive of her cage, but far less so when she has her regular out of cage time. She is the ultimate perch/couch potato. She loves television. I watched a lot of Meerkat Manor when she was young and she learned the Meerkat noises. She loooves food, the more fattening, the better. She is a comfort food bird, I have to be careful that she gets plenty of fruits and veggies because they are definitely not her first choice. We do a lot of orange veggies with her for vitamin A. Fortunately those are fairly tasty. She primarily learned to talk from my Ringneck, so her speech is pretty garbled. And she is not particularly vocal, but if she is frightened, or concerned about something, she has a loud scream. Mostly we hear her muttering or saying a garbled "What a good girl!" which she learned from the Ringneck. One thing about her that is a little different is that she has to go to the vet regularly for a beak trim. Her beak overgrows very rapidly. The vet says it is because she has a malocclusion basically, her beak does not meet quite like it should and does not get worn down evenly. So she goes for beak trims about every 4 months. Not sure if that is more common in Eclectus or not. She and the Ringneck have separate cages of course, but they spend a lot of time together outside of it. She has moments every now and again where she loses her temper and snaps at him, but he can easily fly off, and does. Generally she is pretty patient with him. So your assessment of their behavior is pretty accurate so far, but as you said your bird is pretty young. I think she is a wonderful bird. She talks a little, doesn't scream really, loves snacks and hanging out. She is a great bird for us middle-aged parrot parents 🤣. Truthfully she is such a funny, gentle soul. She absolutely has my heart ❤

She's social with other people which I love about her however she'll prefer to be me always. When I get home it's like a dog greeting me, overly excited! And she's a snuggle puppy. When I just want to relax, she's there to join me. She'll lay down on my shoulder and cuddle or fall asleep. I have never had or met a parrot as special as this little princess. I would highly recommend a female due to my experience, but perhaps I'm just lucky with mine?

Thank you for the video! I adopted a female eclectus a year ago, she was 7 months old and not treated well by her previous owner. She used to be very aggressive with me and with other people, but we worked it through with the help of your training tips and we're best friend now! When she's out of her cage she's super clingy and always looks for play time or training time with me. She's starting to talk a lot too! As you said, she's definitely a nesty bird, constantly looking for dark spots in my room or even on me. I didn't expect a female eclectus to be this friendly honestly! She loves to receive scratches on her beak, loves human perches and she's friendly with other people too (especially with men, I noticed). I was so scared that, as a female ekkie, she would've ignored or kept attacking me, but she turned out to be the sweetest girl. I'm so happy! Thank you from Ryuko and myself!

We have a 11 year old female. We got her when she was just 3 months old. She learnt tricks very quickly and the motivation was sunflower seeds. She regularly picked up words. Learns a new word in a week if coached in the evening for ten minutes. Not cuddly at all but will tolerate gentle rubs on her head from my wife. Was very aggressive/hormonal and drew blood regularly, sometimes flying to the face to bite. However, that tendency, after 11 years has almost vanished. She is now a sweet yet independent parrot who enjoys watching TV on our shoulders in the evening. I would discribe our female eclectus as chatty, independent, couch Potato-ish. Willl accept affection on her own terms. And they are loud, much more so than African Greys.

My girl is very much a one person bird... me! She is incredibly loving and will cuddle under my neck. I refrain from doing the cuddling. I intended on getting a male, because of the common info of males being “nicer” and less moody. Well, she picked me! I don’t think she is moody at all. Yes, she is nesty, but I can reach my hand in and get her out of any dark space. She is perfectly content with sitting on a perch or going to work or out for the day with me. She’s potty trained and only talks when she thinks no one is listening. She is also my co-parent... when I give my kids instructions, she tells them “yeah” in support of me LOL!! I love her dearly!! I have 2 girls and a boy. The oldest girl is about 13 years old and was a rescue, she had a horrible first owner who badly mistreated her.. so she IS what you would call a one person bird; she only trusts the person who rescued her and spent 2 years earning her trust. She doesn't trust me with a step up without biting, but she is very enthusiastic about training. The other two I raised from babies, and have wonderful temperaments. My boy is nearly 2, and is an incredible talker, absolute extrovert of a bird, extremely enthusiastic about training, and can even count to three. The younger girl is nearly 1, and likes to keep to herself most of the time, but occasionally likes to interact.

I have a female red sided Eclectus and she is 20 years old. We got her when she was 3 months old. She is very active and gets into everything. She is territorial and is always trying to nest. She loves me but she has shown aggression towards my husband, but then she has bite him so many times and he has had it. She is the only bird in the home and she does pluck. I do do a annual vet check and since I have switched to your seasonal feeding system for a year now, she is growing back some of her feathers and my vet said she has not looked this good in a while. When I got her there was not a lot info on the species. I am so grateful that I found you website.

I have 2 males and 2 females and have had them all since they were very young. I adore both genders. I’ve found that the girls talk more often and are great imitators whereas the boys stick to typical eccie sounds. My boys are clowns and love playing and being silly, but my girls can be super affectionate and loving. It really does depend on the bird and the owner I suppose!

Just took in a 17 year old female VOS eclectus a few months and I am quite surprised. She is the sweetest bird ever and can do just about anything with her, she does compete for my attention occasionally as she wants her turn. She loves to snuggle into my neck and fall asleep. Never tried to bite and I hold her for quite a bit of time each day.

Thank you as always. I always enjoy your uploads and I’m really happy to see Eclectus now. I have a 3 years old female Eclectus that came to me two years ago because she became really aggressive to my little sister and my dad and only wanted me. (She was my little sister 12 years old birthday gift) they didn’t do the research about her before and took her because they like the colors and because they wanted a “talking” parrot and a quiet one… 🤦‍♀️ for all the wrong reasons… Her diet was so bad. she lost a lot of her feathers because of scratching and didn’t get new ones. Even when I tried to tell them what they needed to do because I did do the research, they didn’t listen to me 😭. Anyway, because she was aggressive towards them she eventually came to me 🥳 I got your training package and the diet and cooking books and found a lot of Facebook groups dedicated to eclectic parrots. She is pretty active. Acting more like the male in your video then the female. She will do anything for a treat and is really attached to me 🥰. The only problem for me is that she is really afraid to fly and I’m her wings 🤷‍♀️ she’ll fly only when scared from instinct and won’t know how to fly back when she is not scared.. or come to me when she wants to. Thank you as always for caring and sharing your amazing knowledge ❤️

Hi guys! I have to say up front that I don’t have birds - I’ve always found them just never learned anything about them and never around any. That said, I’m hooked on your channel and content. I’m absolutely fascinated by your knowledge and easy interaction with all the birds spotlighted! And though I don’t plan to become a bird-buddy, I’ve found just some of the basic principles of the training you employ to be translatable to other animals-in my case: dogs. I will continue watching and learning, and enjoying your loving interaction with all your avian buds! Thank you for the great content. Best.

I have a male just turning 3. I have been working on his flying, and training. Compared to my sun conure I have found he is alot harder to recall train. Where as sun conure always wants to be on you and with you, and never go too far he is perfectly fine to stay on perch, and ignore you, or fly right past you to land on other perch. Some house hold items he will recall immediately for though. Like broom handle, and vaccum hose. He loves to fly over to inspect these thing immediately so i bring them with me when we go outside to train. He prefers not to cuddle unless its night time then he wants to be held and have his head rubbed. After shower he will snuggle under blanket and nap on you.

I have a female eclectus named Nala, she is 8mnths old now. I raised her from 6 weeks of age. She is the most affectionate, beautiful girl. She loves to cuddle up under my chin for head scratches. I have harnessed trained her, so she loves her beach adventures lol. She also loves helping me feed the little baby ringnecks that I am hand raising for a friend. I have also just adopted a 2 year old male named Mr Wilson. I bring him home in a few day's..

We have a female who is @ two and a half and we have had her since about 10 months old. She is very social and very moody 😉 but is good at letting us know when she’s not in the mood. (Growls) or body language. She does prefer myself to other family members but is still good at interacting with us all. She is a slow eater so working with her and training can be an issue but I’ve found that she loves pine nuts and downs them very quickly and motivates her 😬. Thank you for the videos, there’s not an abundance of information out there about raising these beautiful birds so every bit helps.

My only experience is with my 13 y/o male I have had since 3mo. I find my male plenty lively, very curious and engaged for my temperament. I suspect he is more chill and generally much quieter than other species but that can be a positive thing. In general, he is a pretty easy going and adaptable bird companion who loves everyone. The mating urge and regurgitation is a constant but have accepted that as a part of their hard wiring. I love Jamieleigh on all these videos but sense some hesitation toward the species and curious about reasons.

I had a male Eclectus, he was super chill and learned a huge vocabulary in less than a year. I spoiled him and he went with me everywhere. One night I had a house full of sisters and nieces spend the night. He was ecstatic in the morning. He loved jewelry, I wore none! It broke my heart because it was that point where he expressed every word I had ever tried to teach him. He obviously loved women so i found him a good friend that loved him and had time for him. I'm wanting another. This time I won't make the mistake of having my sister baby him on the long road trip home. He was quiet and well behaved and easy to care for.

Originally I wanted a male Eclectus - and all the ones I have met since have been really snuggly and cuddly (although I did find one that bit even harder than Kia!!!!!) but when I went through a lengthy application process and phone interview 6 years ago, the breeder matched me and my lifestyle with a 4 month old eclectus female...... Kia (I chose the name - it means to 'rise up' in Japanese) and I wouldnt change her for the world!!!!! Highly intellegent, exceptionally moody, motivated by food and will do anything for heaps of praise. I started harness training and desentizing her as soon as I got her. I leave her at home some days and other days take her everywhere with me - so she doesnt suffer separation anxiety. She is FIERCLEY independant, will be velcro bird and sit on my shoulder the whole day and I wont be able to get her off, and the next day she will do her own thing like I dont exist :D - everything is when she feels like it, on HER terms. Highly curious and inquisitive, she now has over 100 word vocabulary, and 70 phrases consisting of those words. She loves doing tricks and can do all with verbal ques and the same tricks with hand signals. She is fully flighted and loves to fly around inside (and outside on occasions - accidently) As Jamieleigh said, I guess it comes down to personailities within a species whether it be male or female, and their start in life. I have met some cockatoos that you cannot get a peep out of and others you cannot get to stop screaming! I have read a lot that eckies are considered quite 'boring' or 'dull' birds as they are not as hyper as some other parrots (that shall not be named) probably the 'potato' concept, but having owned one of said type parrot - I am pretty happy not having a screaming/ screeching, tearing up anything (especially the furniture and cables) high stress environment any day!!!!! I will say I do miss having a bird I can cuddle up with and/ or pat (like you can with the males), but I feel pretty privileged that Kia shows/ communicates her affection with kisses, and if that is the boundaries she has set and the only physical contact she is comfortable with then I wouldnt have it any other way........... the trade off, the trust, and the fact she will be my buddy for life is all that matters. They really are a wonderful species - Thank you to Jamieleigh and Dave for shedding more light, in length, on these amazing birds

Eclectus parrots have my heart and I rescue them at my small home based Sanctuary ❤ we look for eclectus knowledgeable homes and some are permanent residents. Visually I feel they are equally stunning. Taking into consideration the different upbringings, males are more even tempered and I tend to allow them to interact with visitors and at local talks or events. They are both very hormonal all the time but display it differently. Males are usually hormonal while being held by humans and females can present as bity or nesting in their cage or under things. We do things to discourage this behavior constantly. We do not allow them on the floor and when the males are being hormonal we do give them their space and attempt to distract them. Love them !

I bought a female due to lack of research on my part. I love her dearly, but you summed it up well, she's a total "perch potato". She prefers to be near you but not really interact. I often teased that she only saw me as "the peasant who brings me food"... so honestly, I chuckled a lot at this video. I am grateful to hear you call them "slow motion", though. I took her to the vet twice thinking her slow easy going attitude could be lethargy or even something wrong with her nervous system. My vet was befuddled that she even usually refuses to hold food in her foot. He said her gripping strength was great so he was perplexed! Belle has been such a big learning curve, but you are right about them being easier to socialize. She is calm and fine with everyone. The only fear she seems to have is nail polish (how weird is that?). She is night to our Macaw's day, no lie! Thank you so much for your video! It helped me a lot to calm my own fears that I was just not taking care of her right.

Please. Like training. I follow all of not many of your trainings, but so far my boy (who was rehome due to being aggressive) hasn’t show any aggression with us or anyone really. Not crazy screams but after 2months we can’t do any clicker training and he gets way to exited (hormonally) when I get close to cage or he’s with me or my kid. And we don’t know why. Lol

I miss my eclectus female. She was amazing and did not get along with any females that got near me lol. Made dating a little hard but hey, she was an awesome bird. She used to try and bite anyone who would try to touch me while I was petting her, she'd let me rub her stomach and under her wings. I can agree on the nesting as she made a nest out of my shirts in my top drawer when I left it open once. She couldn't fly due to her past owner stressing her to a point of plucking. I had taken the time to build a setup in my room that would allow her to travel anywhere she wanted. I miss having her tap her beak on my chest and tell me good morning, she had terrible separation anxiety which caused her to suffer what we believe was a panic attack that killed her. I had left her with a friend of mine who owns a sanctuary just for a week as I had to head out of state and he was the only other person she liked, he had notice her acting incredibly strange before she freaked out and fell over in her cage. The cause of death is all speculation from him and the vet he rushed her to (middle creek veterinary in NC) but sadly she had ultimately passed. I miss my little lula all the time and seeing other eclectuses is very nice

I have got a female eclectus parrot she is the opposite. She loves all the attention. You can't take you eye of her too long because she gets upto mischief alot. If she is quiet then you know she is upto no good. She has so much energy is like someone gave her redbull lol. She does have her mood swings on time time. Also she talks alot and likes to dance. She Electus parrots are costly in food though lol. With the female eclectus I have noticed there can be a slighty change of feathers. Not to sure if the male has this too. These parrots make good family pets but they costly parrots too.

I have a male ekkie! We don't know much about his upbringing as he has been a rescue a few times over, but somewhere along the way he grew a dislike for women - bad news for me! He's absolutely smitten with my partner (and is definitely fond of any male visitors) and will regurgitate on/near him any chance he gets. When he is very hormonal I steer clear of him because I've had my fair share of bites, even if I just shut the door to the room my partner is in - he may fly to me and bite me for that!! We are working on it though and I try not to get discouraged by the bad days! I keep a bag of treats on me at all times and do impromptu training sessions with him, and after a year of living together he is a lot more friendly with me and will actually seek me out during the day occasionally! I can read when he doesn't want to interact with me, and have a t-perch if it's absolutely necessary for me to move him when he's in a mood. We're still working on improving his diet as he doesn't recognise a lot of veggies as food, so his diet is supplemented with vetafarm pellets to ensure his nutritional bases are covered, but I believe that may be a contributing factor to his hormones too. It's great that most ekkies are very chill with everyone in a household, but there's always exceptions to the rule! If I didn't work hard to have a relationship with him and just got scared off by his biting (or god forbid just locked him in his cage all day), we'd have a very tense home life - so please don't adopt an ekkie thinking they're certain to get along with everyone!

I have a 7months female eclectus, she loves training, she loves play with her toys (she has her favourite one from birdtricks☺️), she is not a perch potato at all! Is pretty active during the day and more chill on the afternoon… chill but chatty! She talks all the time mimic sounds and voices 😂 . Yes I agree with her territorial part as you’re not allow to touch any of her toys if she is around playing with them😂 but she’s perfect and I’ve been so worry to get the female as all the info tend to said that about it and people rather get the male.❤️

Hi, I have an eclectus parrot, male. He came to our life as a baby at the start of the pandemic. But we trained him to be a house pet. He fly to get from one part of the house to the other, etc. I took all the safe people that could visit as a opportunity of socialization, and we also have a cockatiel that he ignores, which is the better outcome. Now, that eclectus is having the problem that he does not like to preen and feathers get tattered (he doesn't see anybody as their mate, therefore he doesn't like to keep himself pretty - vet said). Since he is now the happiness of all my immediate and extended family, everyone wants to help and play with him every single day. He is very easy going.

I do not own an eclectus, but the female sounds more up my alley. I like a more chill bird that isn't needy and content with being present. That's how I am personality wise. Hi Jamieleigh. I have a male Eclectus Parrot that is about 2yo now. I bought him from a breeder & has been very timid since a got him. An ex partner used to feed him from her mouth but I had to put a stop to that as he was always wanting to take food from our mouth even when we didn’t have anything in our mouth. I have tried to train him giving food from out of the hand but he won’t take food from the hand. He also seems to favour going to a female rather than a male which is frustrating from me being a male. I would greatly appreciate your help or advice or maybe referral to someone in my area that may be able to come to my home & help with some training. Troy.

My female eclectus is crazy! She runs around the house and is very nesty as you said. My female is a plucker from previous homes. I’m probably her 6th or 7th owner. She is not great with female humans but I’m working on it. My male is pretty energetic. But very hormonal. He’s very me oriented but it polite to other people. My male hates training and is a super slow eater. It takes him like 15 minutes to eat a pine nut. My female on the other hand loves training and is very enthusiastic about food. I personally love both! Males because of their docile personality. I love females because they have so much attitude. I’d love to have more ekkies. They are my favorite species. I’ve met a lot of species and interacted with them and ekkies have always been my favorite

My boy has hormonal episodes several times a day. My girls are more even tempered, sweet and loving than my boy. My girls have never bitten me to the point they have broken skin. My boy has bitten me so hard I lost a fingernail, and draws blood each time he bites. Then like a switch he can be the sweetest little munchkin ever. It’s like dealing with a bipolar person

My 24 months old female was different in the beginning, not much moving and more aggressiv. But now she really enjoys to train, to fly and to play. Sometimes even my female is learning faster then the male. She is also very loving and not agressive anymore. My males are also very active and loving, really cute. The two males are actually like best friends - play always together, sit on the same branch and eat together. :-)

I've had a male for 2 1/2 years since he was 4 months old. He's super enthusiastic about all types of training, super smart, talkative, singy and he almost always wants to be in the same room we are. He's social with all of our male guests, but he's not interested in the women other than me for some reason. He's the best pet I've ever had for sure. We rescued a female eclectus 8 months ago (she's 3 1/2), and she was clipped when we got her. We have since flight trained her a little so she can get around the house on her own (which she does), but she's still independent and quiet compared to my male. She is a total perch potato and not active at all. She can sit still for hours if we don't make her move around or play with toys. It has been impossible attempting to target train her, she is not interested in it at all, even for her favorite treats. She's capable of speaking and whistling, however she won't do it in front of us ever. It's possible she's still getting used to us, but it does seem like females are less interactive and simply more independent. She seems to only be interested in the male and what he's doing, while his behavior hasn't changed at all since getting her. He is less hormonal towards us now and feeds her to release that energy (which is what we got her for), but other than that he doesn't want to interact with her much. We're still figuring out if it's a good fit or not. I would say the males are definitely a better pet for an experienced bird owner, but only from a reputable breeder (ours was inbred with its sister and mine has black feathers regularly, which is apparently common in domestic US eclectus parrots, regardless of diet).

Don't give up on training your female eckie. She may just need a lot of time and encouragement. I don't have vast experience, since I just have one female eckie and she has been my only larger bird. She is a perch potato in general but I've found toys she really liked such as a toy that holds a roll of adding machine paper that she likes to unroll and chew up. She also likes big plastic balls with bells in them. She can throw this around her cage and make a ruckus to get attention. She will do anything for a pine nut and I trained her to do several tricks including putting a plastic ball in a parrot-sized basketball hoop. Once she got the concept of picking up an object and replacing it on command, this led to many other tricks. Mine is very loving to me and likes to watch TV plastered to my cheek. She has also never bitten me or anyone else which I know won't be true for other birds; just lucky with the personality of my Lizzie.

I am curious about the “naked” (stress-plucked) birds, both with a temporary situation that can ultimately be corrected and the ones that stay permanent: In interaction with other birds, do fully-feathered ones see the bald ones and think they have a handicap or something? I mean, are they lower in the social stature in their avian ranks? Is there a social hierarchy with birds on that level?

Is Rusty a plucker?

We adopted a 9yr old female last year. She's a plucker like Rusty but only her chest. She's is sweetheart but I when she's ready.. She's never mean but when she wants something she belts out her "air horn" whistle and it usually happens when she smells I'm cooking something she wants like spaghetti or chicken and yellow rice 😂😂😂 Otherwise you're absolutely right, no one would even know we have a bird otherwise. She is a mess maker, also loves to take a tubby in her water but gawd forbid we squirt her with a water bottle to moisturize her feathers. Daily she likes when we bring her cage outside on the lanai w/ us during the day at feeding time she likes to be back in the house where we open her cage door and let her climb all over, inside & outside of her cage.. She's definitely NOT a people bird, she's uninterested in training but does love blueberry yogurt seeds and will follow your hands anyplace to get it 💯 She's actually very easy going and not demanding at all compared to our 2 male budgies she's a breeze 👌💯

Hi, I'm really thankful that I came across your video ! I've been planning on getting an eclectus, but you mentionned feather destructive behaviour which is my absolute fear when it comes to owning a bird. Are both of them just as prone to it, or is it more of a male thing given their temperament ? On a sidenote I've personnaly heard once about an eclectus female that only liked women, guess it still can happen :D

It can happen with both individuals, since usually this plucking comes from diet-related issues.

@@lizziehn5928 Thanks for your reply, I never realized it was an issue with eclectus, since the only ones I came across were doing fine, but since yesterday this is the second male in a row I saw with plucking issues

It also happens A LOT because the birds are not kept busy they get bored and have not other outlet but to feather destroy... they are to intelligent to be left with no mentally stimulating environment ...

I am a new female eclectus parent. Any tips? She doesn't like to interact much with me. She's about a year old. How much time should I give her to adjust normally?
