Hello there everyone, here is the live performance of No pains No gains or N・p・s N・g・s by MALICE MIZER, in 1080p HD quality. This is not a poorly upscaled one, but a very good rip from the original DVD. (Sans Retour Voyage "Derniere" ~Encoure Une Fois~). This is the best quality possible.
No Pains no Gains, one of the most iconic songs from MALICE MIZER, aggressive, mysterious, the typical girl voice, and harpsichord, this song is really one of a kind. The live performance is really, really extreme, it is nationalist Japanese, and much more aggressive then on the CD, I really like their outfits here, especially Közi's look, the military uniform fits his red hair and guitar perfect. This is just a bonus feature of the Voyage DVD, so this performance is often overlooked.

I see some people writing here something about anti-war protest song but that is not accurate. NPSNGS is a song most likely about BDSM if not straight up a couple engaging into murdering each other… The performance is shocking because its meant to be shocking. Remember how shocking marilyn manson was to American audiences? This is the equivalent. Thst does not mean they support imperial Japan to Nazis, this is provocative art. Maybe they even tried some some anti- or pro-war statement with the performance (just the song itself is about bdsm) From today‘s perspective I also think this was a mistake but on the other hand it seems the shock value is still here…

Im a new MM fan.. For a second I thought this wasn't fascist but they literally raised their hands up like nazi's. The song is anti-war so I assume that they did this for shock value and they went too far this time. The costumes and flag were already a lot but the Hitler hand sign just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The song is fucking great, just like the whole album. So far have only heard Voyage-Sans Retour Malice Mizer album and 2 M10M albums.

Hello! Welcome to the fandom. Enjoy discovering this amazing music, especially the masterpiece that is merveilles! You're right, doing this salute is very extreme and of bad taste. It is very wrong, and I wish they didn't do it. But as you said, they did it for shock value, and because it fits in the war story of this song. I'm 99% sure they do not agree at all with the nazi ideology. There's also two more things to consider. In Japan, the education and awareness of WW2 is, or was very different. They see it very different there. I read online that you can cosplay as an SS soldier and almost nobody will mind. This might have changed now though, but it was like that in the 90s. Another thing is that the roots of visual kei have a tradition of using nazi imagery for shock value. A ton of great VK artists from the 80s/early 90s at least once did something related to nazism. This is very sad and I wish it wasn't like that. But I still listen to these bands, because I know they are not neo-nazis and have a different, worse, understanding of the tragedy of WW2, and also because it is usually a one-off thing, in just one song, live or photoshoot, not the whole band history. Anyway, very wrong... I wish they would have stayed away from this. Thank you for your comment!

I think it’s more like extreme radical performative art than offensive, or at least that was the intent. ( not saying it can’t be taken offensively , given the history ) but since the lyrics are anti-war, I do believe the intent was to make one uncomfortable or queasy with its imagery. Similar to movies that deal with the topic.

This is not really the nazi salute per se, the Japanese used it like the Romans did in Ancient Rome. That's basically how the Japanese soldiers saluted the Emperor, shouting "Hirohito banzai!" (long live the Emperor!). The military uniform the members are wearing is actually the uniform of the Japanese army, and the flag that Yu~ki is waving is the Japanese flag, the flag of the rising sun (not that it's much better, mind you). And yes, it's really tacky. That being said, Cantavanda is right. A lot of Japanese people don't know much about the nazis. For them, they were just some "bad guys" who did some "bad stuff" in Europe during WWII. For them, Hitler was a bit like a cartoon villain, a crazy short guy with a mustache, a lunatic who screamed a lot. And that's pretty much it. That's why the Japanese don't see anything wrong with nazi imagery. That's why you will often see Hitler in manga and animation. That's why Sugizo used to wear a swastika and a nazi uniform on stage in the 90s, just because he thought that it looked "cool". Sheer ignorance, even if it's hard to believe for us, Westerners. Thank god, things are changing a little, but there's still a long way to go.

Yeah, a lot of Malice Mizer's songs weren't really performances were they? Lol Many songs were either mimicked or left for Gackt/ Klaha to sing karaoke style to. NPS NGS Le Ciel Gekka No Yasaokyoku Je Te Veux Kyomu no Naka de no Yuugi I don't know why, but the only song we see them play EXTREMELY well live, is Bel Air during "Merveilles L' Espace". All other band or guitar-oriented performances seem to suffer, and you can hear this even more in uploaded bootleg recordings during the Gackt and Klaha eras. I don't want to believe it, but maybe Malice Mizer was a band that was "forced" into success by corporate intervention. Sort of like famous Pop artist of today, like Brittney Spears or Justin Bieber. The fans seem to react the same at least.

you talk using the 2 live dvds (with gackt) as reference. if you listen Bootlegs from Gackt era, you can see that he sing in all songs, but in these 2 dvds they decided to use studio record as audio source. This song n.p.s n.g.s is the exception, but in the unedited concerts, gack sing all of the song (and the girls voice is not in these performance) sorry for my bad english xD listen 1995.10.10 Shibuya live. ma cherie del dvd vogaye también usa la versión de estudio como audio en vez del audio real (solo ponen sonido de audiencia , pero en realidad está mexclado para que parezca estar en vivo)

I mean, it’s par for the course for a highly refined studio band to be a lot weaker live. And the earlier eras didn’t sound that “manufactured”, so they probably became too fancy in the studio to be able to pull it off live. Also, “Kyomu...”’s instrumental arrangement is almost entirely synth loops.

klaha don't even have vocals on kyomu no naka de no yuugi. and listening to the bara ni irodorareta live his voice sounds clearly different from the cd. just because it is well sung doesn't mean it is playback. same for gackt, though this performance in particular is indeed a shame through most of it.

@mknsnh
@mknsnh 3 жыл бұрын
i agree, i don’t think they had to go that far, their more recent version of it for the 25th anniversary shows a better performance without all of this stuff…, but it’s their pretrial of n.p.s.n.g.s, rather painting imperial japan of blame. every japanese person was being brainwashed (as u said) to think japan was gonna win the war, but of course, they did not. i honestly thought it would be cool if they just burned the flag on stage and would make a better shock value bc n.p.s.n.g.s is definitely the best song to hear being performed live. it’s weird tho bc when i first watched this, i never understood why no one talked abt the fact they were waving around the rising sun flag, something that gives people horrible memories of what imperial japan did, but i guess that’s mm for you, and no one thought too much of it. the lyrics definitely counteract what they are displaying on stage, so maybe that’s what they were trying to go for, who really knows. and making kami slowly dying near the end is just kind of poking at japan making all these people die in a war that japan knew they weren’t gonna win, while shouting “die game” a double meaning phrase depending on how you interpret it.

This is a subject that deserves to be better understood than saying that one or the other is n**i or fascists. Many vk bands have at one time used n**i outfits (malice mizer wore JAPANESE ARMY WW2 uniforms) or n**i symbols, but at no point was it appreciating the n**i and yes to shock or purely for the look . Something similar happened both in the US with some punks in the 70s and in England in the late 60s. I don't want to relativize this subject, but as I said at the beginning, we have to be very careful not to judge wrong.

@@mrzagalia it is not just for shock, but due to the fact that japan was allied with the nazis, a lot of their horrors didn't reach japan and therefore they are more tolerant and some even praise the nazis (not in a racist way but out of respect and for thinking hitler was cool, cus believe it or not hitler made it so Germany was the first country to exit the great depression by re-arming Germany and building better infrastructures)

I do get they’re trying to get the message that war is wrong, but they rlly didn’t have to do the n@z1 salute, it leaves a very bad taste for me, and I rlly wish they didn’t do it, if they were going to make N-P-S-N-G-N-S an anti-war story, they shouldn’t have cut it out, this is also one of the reasons why I don’t rlly consider myself a fan (right next to Gackt, and how provocative Illuminati was), the idea of making a song/performance on how bad the war is was such a good idea, they just shouldn’t have done that salute… :(
