I think misplaced expectations played a big role in the split reception this movie received. James Wan has developed a reputation for creating more straightforward scary films like The Conjuring and Insidious, and Malignant is decidedly not that. It's very much in the vein of old school 90s horror films, with its campy self-awareness and general zaniness. It's a helluva good time if that's your thing, and lucky for me, it most certainly is. This movie rocks.

I loved this movie it was sm fun watching it in theaters and the twist caught me so off guard like I didn’t expect Gabriel to be in the back of her head. My favorite sequence is the police station massacre that was hilarious. It’s so campy and I just loved James Wan’s take on camp. The kills were pretty great too. I love the score to this movie as well.

This had the most fun movie experience! After the movie a bunch of random people who didn't know eachother all stopped to talk about it together. Malignant owes a lot to the Italian thrillers of the 70s(giallo) like Deep Red and Tenebrae. The hyper violence, the bright colors and aggressive soundtracks, and the unreliable main character/narrator. Deep Red and Tenebrae are all time favorites and highly recommended.

I love this movie. So, the reason for the 'feel' of the movie is b/c James Wan instead of doing it in a Western way, made it more akin to how Japanese movies are made. Their movies tend to still have a hint of the kabuki theater about them, and that's what he wanted to bring here. He has talked about it in interviews & in the BTS stuff. I had so much fun with it, but I also have been watching Japanese movies and anime since I was very small, like 3 when I was in Germany. lol

This is basically a modern take on the old Italian Giallo films of the 1970s and the more I see it the more obvious the influence is - but I think it's not a genre that a lot of younger horror fans are aware of so this movie was kind of met with confusion and what the hell?

From previews I was so stoked assuming it was a James Wann about a Sleep a paralysis demon , so excited someone finally did a horro on this common experince so many people have but nope. I do feel for James Wann though because he publicly told the media this was a completely different genre of movie thst he’s wanted to do for a long time, that he got the backers to sign off of letting him do exactly what HE wanted & said the campiness (sp) is 100% intentional and to be fair. The horror genius thst did literally the BEST horror movies ever very obviously took a completely different road and feel with this. The conjuring didn’t have 99’s keyboard “where is my mind” music and the soap opera dramatic lines throughout this. It’s a complete detour from his horrors he’s done so well on & clearly he knew that BUT the media didn’t get it, viewers expected a Conjuring level horror from the Master & most thought the weirdness was not intentional & just a bad movie becasuse they’re expectations were based on their wants. Relatively speaking , it bombed financially compared to the greats he’s done but it wasn’t about the money , he wanted to do this for himself , give it a try and I hoenstly think it’s fun , I enjoyed it , the twists are awesome but ilk admit i was orerty disappointed it wasnt the epic wann horror i assumed.

When I see the police station massacre, all I can think about is this quote: "After all, Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backwards and in high heels." Love this movie though! This was the first movie I watched after deciding to not watch trailers anymore, and it was a great decision! Movies that have a batshit insane third act are the best! The woman with the mullet in the jail scene was Zoey Bell, who famously was Uma Thurnan's stunt double in Kill Bill, and basically played herself in Death Proof. If you guys haven't watched Death Proof, please do! Also want to recommend Psycho Goreman, because while they're very different films, if you liked Malignant, you're most likely going to like Psycho Goreman.

I’m an Architect Professionally & can say in your defense you were right, the attic ventilation fan we see is 100% a commercial ventilation fan & it’s massive size would be for a massive commercial warehouse lol good eye , most homes don’t have attic ventilation fans, just the vents on opposite ends to push air through. Looking thru the attic vent we see it’s as big as the fan which definitely is not existing on the outside views we saw lol. I’m assuming they put it in to lead viewers to assume their in a commercial space somewhere becasue somebody has to sign off onband convince the set crews that they DO want this 5’ vent fan in this 120+ year old homes attic. lol guess it worked.m, I thought the same thing u did first time, the steep slope stick framed artic she was in told me she’s in an residential homes attic but the fan threw me off & I thought , no way set builders would put that rediculius fan in a turn of the century HoME. The reveal is worth it though.

This was one of my favorite recent movies. I think it came out a few months before Barbarians and I really loved that as well. I wish more studios gave directors the option to make original films because this movie was a throwback as you said to the 80s, the leak of horror.
