Mall Kittens

In a return visit to the abandoned Lincoln Mall (Matteson, IL), we came across a days-old litter of SEVEN kittens tucked-away in a walled-off store-turned-storage area for the mall's Carson Pirie Scott department store.
Normally we'd have left them for the mother to relocate, but with the mall under demolition at the time, the kittens were in immediate danger. After finding and consulting a nearby Humane Society, the decision was made to evacuate them. The area these cats were in was demolished in the days that followed, had we not intervened it is likely they would've been killed.
The mother was briefly spotted at one point but regrettably we were unable to catch her. Checking in about a month or so later, I was told this litter survived in the care of a surrogate and all were adopted out to loving homes.

*****REGARDING THE MOTHER...***** We're not local to Matteson, IL and did not go into this planning a kitten rescue. If you watch other content on this channel, you'll understand that we were there for the mall, and legally weren't even supposed to be there at all (cops were circling the property at times during our visit). Under better circumstances we would've stuck around and found a way to trap the mother as well... regrettably, it did not go that way. I make this statement because people are coming out of the woodwork lately to try and spin what we did here into something bad. Everyone wants to be the hero but in the end we were the ones who were actually there, and we did what good could be done with the immediately-available facts, resources and time. The reality of any animal rescue is you can't save lives acting on pure emotion, and you can't save them all. That said, closer to home we're very active with the local TNR program and have spay/neutered and/or rehomed somewhere north of 20 cats and kittens (including my own two) since 2013. Seven more if you count these guys. Eight cats off the street that day would've been perfect, but seven is pretty fucking good as far as I'm concerned. There will be no further comment.

I'm glad they saved the babies after talking with a rescue organization. But either he or the organization should have tried going back maybe with a recording of babies meowing so they could try to trap her. She must have been worried about her 7 babies. That's a lot of babies. I am glad they grew up and went to good homes. I hope the Mama got out of the bldg. I hate stories with dead ends.

The abandoned building was an easier place for a stray cat's family staying & sleeping. But why authorities didn't clean this useless & dirty place so far? If they wouldn't eliminate this ghost building, other homeless cats or dogs will stay at this place for their street living. They should totally eliminate this scary waste building for animals & humans in their sector.
