I was very fortunate [as a young lad in the 1950s] to be on one of those last 'non-stop' runs by Mallard, as well as shorter hops from Darlington to Newcastle. I was also on trains pulled by the likes of Sir Nigel Gresley, Cock of the North, Talisman, Golden Arrow, and other famous names. I can still close my eyes, think, remember, feel, smell and 'hear' those experiences of yore. Oh, and Mallard didn't always have to stop for water, there were also water troughs that it could dip a hose into while still on the go.

Man was I born much too late! I can only imagine how exhilarating it must have been to ride, and drive, it. The only running steam line near me is a tiny stretch of an old narrow gauge line. The distance is disappointing, but it sure is a wonderful ride while it lasts though. But I've never gotten to experience high speed rides like that (hardly even wide gauge rides). Hopefully that will change in the future :)

What'll happen on Mallard's 100th anniversary? Do you think the NRM will let her run for a short period of time in celebration?

The A4s were wonderful looking beasts and with a power output of upto 2700 hp also extremely powerful. But the German streamlined locomotive in 1937 had 3000 hp and achieved 125 mph on the level and was not damaged after attaining that speed, unlike Mallard. Mallard attained 126 mph for only 100 yards down a slight incline, and even Sir Nigel Gresley doubted that it had attained that speed.

Did they show any scene of mallard running 126 miles an hour any time in this vid?
@fp70265 жыл бұрын
The title is incorrect. Mallard is not a train, it is a locomotive. A train is what it pulls.
@alberttetley5 жыл бұрын
yes that is correct but most people know the complete unit as a train. so not to confuse people who English is not their first language it is just easier to call it a train inside of a locomotive.

This Train Set The Steam Locomotive Speed Record 75 Years Ago. The fastest trains in the USA are the Amtrak Acela, which hit a pretty decent 150 MPH. But on July 3rd, 1938, a steam-powered locomotive called the Mallard hit 125.88 MPH in England, and it's still the fastest steam locomotive in the world.
