I've seen other maple syrup channels on KZbin and none of them have anything like you are making. You are a true visionary for sure. Can't wait to see it in production! 🔥

I am trying to learn how to do this, so I'm curious and don't know what I'm doing. Isn't the purpose of fire brick to act as insulation and keep the fire in the fire box and the heat moving up into the pan? So you'd want firebrick, AKA refractory brick, lining the lower part and sides but you want the fire right on the bottom of the sap pan? So no metal top to the stove, just open at the top if the pan was removed.
@Mallard5plus1Farmhouse
@Mallard5plus1Farmhouse 11 ай бұрын
Yes you're absolutely right. I use metal on top right now because my sap pan isn't big enough to cover my whole evaporator. They are very expensive so one day I'll have one that fits

Hey there. Great video. About to attempt it. What gauge metal would be good to build the inside shelf. ( not too knowledgeable with metal.) thx
@Mallard5plus1Farmhouse
@Mallard5plus1Farmhouse Жыл бұрын
Hey! You know I don't remember what gauge it was. All I know I grabbed the thickest gauge that they had at Lowes. As long as you cab weld it it should work 👍

How's she goin'? Great start on your evaporator!! I think it's well set up to work good. Getting the heat along the bottom of the pan is key and with the piece you added in the bottom of the tank I think you will achive that!!! Looking forward to seeing it with a pan full of sap!!! Take care!!

CJ that looks cool. I am looking forward to seeing it next time. Are there vent holes to let the smoke travel to the flue? I made a barrel stove with a kit, I found out you can remove the flue damper to have better access for the bolts you have to put in. Thanks for sharing and stay safe. Ken
@Mallard5plus1Farmhouse

Hey Ken! Yes the smoke will travel right underneath the pan and out the flue. I ended up taking the damper off to make getting the bolts on easier. Thanks for watching buddy!

Good morning CJ, Glad to see the root cellar being put to good use. Refurbishing the oil tank into a boiler is a good idea, hopefully it will be a great boiler for what you need for your syrup preparation. Good luck with your project. Stay safe! Fred. 👏🏻👏🏻👍👍

That was really interesting. I’m learning so much from this channel about old skills blending with modern invention. Excuse my ignorance, but why were you shovelling snow into a building?
@Mallard5plus1Farmhouse
@Mallard5plus1Farmhouse 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Lynne I'm glad you're learning along with us! The snow in the root cellar is to store the buckets of sap until we are ready to boil them all down. The sap needs to stay cool while it's being stored

How did you deal with the sludge that was in it? I have a tank that I want to cut but I am not sure of the safety issues that come along with cutting a tank like this in terms of it going kablooie.
@Mallard5plus1Farmhouse
@Mallard5plus1Farmhouse 3 жыл бұрын
I was worried about the same thing lol. I ended up cutting the top off and wiping out what sludge I could. There was a few times where I was welding and looked down to see some small flames. But I kept a bag of sand close by and just tossed it on the flames and that took care of it.
