Well, you do get in some out-of-the-way places, George. Some first-class photography there, anyway, and some lovely old locos!

+balmesh Thanks again for your kind comments. I am off to Iran next Saturday, no steam but there should be some hard working diesels in the mountains.

Myself, Ian Stephens (who you know) and two others visited Eritrea in 2007, we had a fantastic time ! Your filming George is your usual high quality and its great to watch it and compare with our own movies from our trip. Actually I didn't think they were allowing any tourist trains there for the foreseeable future, but I could be wrong, thanks for sharing Stewart

+hollpoll Hi Stewart, Thanks for your kind comments. You are probably correct about the tourist trains, I just assumed they were. I have deleted reference to them in the intro.

I was an Military Police Officer in 1972 and 1973. I guess one could say that I saw this train when it was still working but never rode it. Most Military never did because it was so slow and the smell was nothing short of horrific and it was unforgivably hot especially when you would get down to the flat lands in the dessert where temperatures far exceeded 100 F. There were very few air conditioned anything back in those days till you arrived at the TTU which was our paradise type resort on the Red Sea.If you only went there because you love trains then you missed so much of the real beauty of Eritrea
@blackthorne574 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I saw quite a lot of Eritrea while I was there, not just trains.

@@blackthorne57 Thanks. Were you able to go to Asmara. That is where our Military post was located from the early 1950s through the Mid 1970s.. I believe Asmara to be one of the most beautiful cities in the country. And talking about trains again I spent 4 years in Germany and that was a great train system they had there.

@@kagnewmp12 Yes I did spend some time in Asmara, a beautiful Art Deco city. Very clean, probably the cleanist in Africa. We travelled from Asmara down to the coast at Massawa and back by train. We stopped off at various places on the way.

@@blackthorne57 It was architecturally designed and built by the Italians to be the show place of Africa. Those mountain roads are filled with those sharp turns we use to call Switchbacks. The one spot I think was the 21 K marker where an Army wrecker went over the side and dropped almost 2000 feet or more. The driver obviously died and the truck which was the size of a full size tractor trailer was brought back up in just small pieces and the only parts that survived were the tires one being over a mile away from where the truck went over. A very beautiful but dangerous road. We also had one of our Military Policeman ambushed and murdered by Bandits. I have linked the Video with his picture and how he died at 9:25 in the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5_HemOYjZt4r5o This happened just before I arrived. It tells the story mostly about how wonderful it was to be stationed the by Daniel Minchen. It's nice to share some of my stories and life's experiences there but if you don't wish to hear them just let me know.

They should bring an American Chez Local motive to help out with the extra struggling of these locomotives up the mountains

I do not understand your comment, what is an American Chez Local motive?

I noticed each car had like a guard, is that to keep people from sneaking a free ride.
@blackthorne575 жыл бұрын
The guard on each car is a brakeman, the line has steep inclines and the train does not have continuous brakes.
