Mallikarjun Mansur Raga Margi Bhairav

Wah, kya baat hai! The fluidity of raga interpretation is always striking with Mansur ji, as is the fact that he was able to maintain such an extensive repertoire with complete clarity. This is a stunning bandish and the approach to the sam is just mesmerising! In October 2021, I spent 5 days with Rajshekhar ji and made him hear this piece as an excellent example of the way he used to sing with his father-guru (he did not like the term vocal support and preferred to use the phrase that he sang along with his father-guru). There are places in this rendition where he has made an attempt to go beyond Mansur ji's singing, especially because his voice was in exquisite form for this recording - but when I said this to him, he put his hands to his ears and said, "Na Baba, it wasn't possible to go beyond Appa!" 🙂

mansur is the only musician with such a large repertoire of ragas with elaborate renditions. Rest of the famous musicians render 10-20 ragas well and just fleet through the rest.

सारंग समान लागे एरी सखि मैं तो का कहूँ तोसे पिया प्रात होने आये. दई री देवता कासों कहिये , सगरी रेन सौतन संग जागे. of many meanings of saarang, here the heroine uses double meaning ie kaamdev/ cupid or rangeeley/ one with colourful nature. oh my friend, what to tell you, he looks full of colours (various shades he got from his consort during the nightlong union, such as sindur, alakta, kaajal, missi, etc) and reached here in the early morning. oh my (maid) , how can treat him like a god of my heart, who stays all night with my female rival?

Unlike in Ahir Bhairav, here Ra and Pa are omitted in aaroha…and also Paa is alpa in avaroha. Sangati of Ma and upper-Saa is unique too. What a classy rendition!

Deodhar explained that in the uttarang, shades of kafi can be seen in ahir bhairav, Here, I don't think we can really see that kafi ang in the uttarang imo

गाण न कळलं तरी ऐकत रहावसं वाटतं , सहज गान आहे । मग हल्लीचे गायक पद्मजा फेणाणीसारखे, आरती अंकलीकरांसारखे शिरा ताणून का बरं गातात ? या तुलनेत खरे गंधर्व ते गंधर्वच बरोबर गातात। बाकीच्यांनी गाऊच नये, म्हणजे आमच्या कानावर बेसूर गान पडायलाच नको ।
