A Review of the MalloMe Camping Cookset.
amzn.to/2O6ZIEX - link for full specs.
The MalloMe Cookware set is a 10 piece nesting mess kit for backpacking and camping that I've had for about year now, with great results.
...For an easier read, check out my full blog post here: www.sintax77.co...
While I typically pack pretty minimal for my solo backpacking trips, for group backpacking trips and snow melting in the winter, I've grown to really like this budget mess kit. It's also quite nice for more involved backpacking meals and trail food cooking.
Items included with the MalloMe Cookware Set:
Aluminum 1 Liter Pot
Pot Lid
Aluminum Frying Pan
2 BPA Free Bowls
Folding Stainless Steel Spork
BPA Free Soup Spoon / Ladel
Wooden Spoon Spatula
Cleaning Sponge
Folding Stainless Steel Fork (free bonus)
Nylon Travel Bag Drawstring Pouch
Other Trail & Backpacking Cooking Items Seen:
Toaks 450ml titanium cup amzn.to/2KmPpdE
Toaks 750ml titanium cook pot amzn.to/2vfBsJK
Sea To Summit Alpha Light Long Spoon amzn.to/2MdiVV2
Budget Canister Stove amzn.to/2n7iNv6

Great review on some discount gear. I love how everyone has their own way of backpacking. Aluminum is your heavier gear and my standard kit is stainless steel. It's all good.

This also works great for hotel or dorm cooking, paired with a hot plate or simple alcohol stove.

I'VE GOT THE SAME KIT AMIGO. I SECOND WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT IT NOT BEING THE LIGHTEST OR MOST TECHNICAL. THAT BEING SAID, IT'S AWESOME DURING WINTER CAMP COOKING AND THE VALUE IS TOUGH TO BEAT. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO. ALWAYS A PLEASURE.

So glad to see you continue mingling some Amazon stuff in your review items. You’re keeping it real and it’s appreciated. Not everyone can afford the “best quality.” I would love to have an Arc Zip, but I’ll stick with my Ula until I hit powerball.

I bought this exact kit from a direct-from-China website. It was unbranded and cheaper, but didn't include the spoon or that stuff sack. I've also been happy with it.

When I first looked at cook sets I was comparing everything. Though in the end I opted for stainless steel as a good all round cook set. Durable and good thermal conductivity properties as well. I decided against aluminium because of the health problems associated with aluminium. If in good condition this is not a problem but damaging it is easier and you may need to replace regularly. Titanium has poor thermal properties for a pan but for simple boiling water it was fine. So for ultralight boiling water I opted for snowpeak titanium and for all round cookware I opted for MSR alpine cook sets. Both the 2 and 4 versions. Though the costs are higher I should avoid needing to replace them if slightly damaged, and do not have to worry about the health complications of aluminium.

David Lazarus That’s not true what so ever. There’s been no established link between the two at all. It was a myth in the 60s and 70s.

Andrew C well I am not taking that risk. I would rather a slight weight penalty on a cook kit and save weight elsewhere. My Alpine 4 kit is 400 grams heavier but Is also more robust.

Thanks Sintax, great review as always! For solo use, you got me hooked on the Toaks products and I love them. And for melting snow I use that Halulite Tea Kettle you featured a few years ago. But when I'm with a group, I pull out the JetBoil Guide kit which has everything I need.

Thanks for the review. I bought one just like it back in early 2016 made by OuterEQ. Same thing. I think there are like 100 different “manufacturers” making pretty much the same product. It has it’s uses but you actually sold me on the MSR Flex Skillet when you & Sara made pancakes the first time. Love that pan if the occasion calls for it. Otherwise it’s a Toaks and a Fancee Feast. Cheers!

I have this set for car camping and I love it. Perfect for my daughter and me to do spaghetti or mac n cheese. I have a heavier cannister stove that I use with it. Never given me a cause to complain :)

Good Review! I have 2 mess kits for backpacking, but most of the time I'll use my 530 ml titanium pot only. Sometimes it's nice to use the cook kit for making good meals at camp. Have fun on your Colorado trip!

I have a smilar stove set though its much thicker and heavier then that Mallome set, it likely weight 3-4 times as much, but it does come with two pots and two skillets, i purchashed an ectra pot handle and i keep my whisperlite stove in there at all times for a complete cookset. i believe i paid around 30-40 dollars for it back in like 98-99 if i remember right .

Try Flitz or auto compound to get the diesel off fast. Although a blackened pan should heat faster.

Jesse Mauney same, and I was wondering what would be a good way to prevent that. My problem was the fact I used my cook gear on coals. There was more heat coming from a wider area. In this instance, I think these pieces of gear are probably best when used on a cook stove.

What are your thoughts on the toxicity of aluminum cookware? There’s a lot of talk in the community about it not being safe. I actually looked at a kit just like this and eventually went the minimalist route. But I have my old aluminum cookware from my childhood backpacking days and I still use aluminum water bottles.

If you go to the reallybigmonkey channel he does what is supposed to be a leaching test that can be done at home. iIt was an interesting video. I believe the kit in this video is anodized which as far as I have been able to find out is nonreactive, even to acidic foods as long as it is in good shape.

Using aluminum cookware a few times a year would be less of a health concern that eating fast foods, high sugar, fat, salt etc, drinking alcohol, smoking pot. Those kinds of things. I gave up aluminum pots and pans 40 years ago but bought this kit for occasional use. Glad you're thinking about your health.

I forgot to say. I paired this with the ikea duktig kids cooking utensils. Camping I take the whole set, hiking just the spatula. Hotel stays I pair with a tiny hot plate and a hot pot. I never use hotel appliances. I worked at a hotel and the maids told us what people do to those, from vomiting in to using as a toilet...

People might downplay this but even anodized aluminum leeches into cooked items. Not worth the cost savings to me but use your own judgment.

blasko229 I can’t find any research that shows anodized aluminum cookware leaches into food. I wouldn’t worry about it if you only used the camp cook kit once or twice a year.
