Living in Mallorca isn't always perfect, so here are 10 things I HATE about living in Mallorca, Spain from how expensive the island has become to working in Mallorca and buying and renting property in Mallorca.
I'll also look at the controversial issue of schools in Mallorca and how hard it can be to get a school place to over tourism and overcrowding in Mallorca during the Summer months.

I would also like to add. Try to visit the island several times throughout the year, even winter time where one plans to live to get a feel of the place. Prior to COVID, I used to come to Mallorca even in January, February time for very short breaks, even day trips to just check my apartment over which I have had for about 10 years now. I now come over 2 or 3 times a year now. Also a drive in the mountains can be easier in the winter months, but there were still some cycle holidays.
@MallorcaUnderTheSun
@MallorcaUnderTheSun Жыл бұрын
Absolutely Lee, I think visiting in the winter is vital before moving here. Re. the cycling, I actually think the winter is the best time to have a cycling holiday. Emptier (safer) roads and cooler temperatures. I never really understand those who cycle in 35 degrees in the Summer. It can't be fun.

I think sometimes the reality of what seems like paradise can turn sour after even a short while, I know people who emigrated to Australia and returned months later wasn't what they expected, Its always important to do as much research as you can, Oh nearly forgot Happy new year Alex.

Exactly, it's so easy to look at a nice beach and see paradise, but being aware of a few home truths and making a move with eyes wide open is so important, especially when emigrating. A very happy new year to you too. 🤗

Happy new year Alex. I Watched and lissened to your video and read a lot of comments. myself and my wife have lived mainland Spain for nearly 18 years and my advice to anyone who wants to move to Spain to work. you have to have the drive and determination to succeed at what ever work you wish to do either for yourself or for someone else as its not easy making it in another country. If you come with a half hearted attempt you will fail and think of something that no one else is doing and that's not easy. Its a great place to retire with a lovely relaxed lifestyle and a much slower pace than the UK. I was told only yesterday that to meet the requirements you will have to have an income of 36 grand per year for a couple. I can only wish anyone the best of luck If you decide to give it a go.
@MallorcaUnderTheSun
@MallorcaUnderTheSun Жыл бұрын
Hi Nic, your comment is spot on. I think you're right too about having drive and determination. In the UK, if you don't like something, be it a job or business, it's quite easy and quick to throw in the towel and find something else. To live here, you really need some stickability when it comes to life issues.. Yes, it'll be interesting to see those requirments now for third country citizens coming to live it . It was a lot easier when I arrived all those years ago.

Yes, it'll be much quieter then, but also bear in mind those resorts will be a lot windier at that time of year too so without the summer heat they could feel cooler. Alcudia beach is v. popular with wind and kite surfers at this time of year for that reason... BUT you are right, you would enjoy a much more peaceful time than in the Summer months!

I loved this video. Very informative.. I love Majorca as it’s a very quick flight from UK. But you don’t get the all year round sun and warmth like, say, Tenerife. On a completely different note, Son Matias beach , How beautiful is it in January.?? I would 100% fly out from the UK for a day to spend time just sitting in the tranquility 🤣 I love this beach and have stayed in both the Globales and Son Matias Hotel. Both I would recommend, the latter probably more. We always spend the day on this beautiful beach (summer months you have to be the early bird to get a sunbed and parasol) it does get very busy. This is why is so nice to see it so peaceful. Also recommend The Scotsman bar (at the beginning of the vid). I loved the Christmas lights in Palma video, this is definitely something I will be doing. ❤

Having lived in Cornwall in England previously, (also a big holiday area) I used to like the winter months there, apart from the heavy rainfall! I liked the empty beaches on (admittedly not that common) sunny days in January and February. Yes, everything is going up in price at the moment - food and housing costs! This was a terrific, honest and balanced video Alex - which will be of huge interest to anyone thinking of moving to the island. You gave out some great tips too. Good points: Mallorca is popular in large part because you can get there quickly in just over two hours from London for example. You can get pretty much everything in the shops if you have the money. Sunshine in winter is always good and beaches are nice (though quite dirty these days). Beautiful views of mountains, beaches, etc. Bad points: Winters are cold and humid and most properties are not insulated and often have no heating or A/C, huge lack of respect that I have not experienced anywhere else in the world (currently in Alicante which is such a huge contrast as people here are very kind, friendly, and welcoming towards foreigners), high level of xenophobia, greed, sleaze (many very sleazy characters, drug dealers, etc, extremely dodgy, greedy, and dishonest landlords). Attracts all kinds of people, but that includes a high proportion of sleazy types. Terrible driving, disrespect on roads, swearing and obscene gestures made by many drivers towards pedestrians. Dog poop all over pavements and even on beaches. Highly transient place, people often stay for a few years and leave. Making genuine friends in Mallorca is very tough. Often people will befriend you because they think they can get something from you. Many ´users ´around. Food prices and cost of accommodation only going up every year.
@MallorcaUnderTheSun
@MallorcaUnderTheSun Жыл бұрын
Hello there! Interesting comment, but I think the downsides you mentioned can just about apply to just about everywhere in the world depending on experience. Although this a hugely transient place and I'm really fed up with saying goodbye to people, so that's spot on :(

@@MallorcaUnderTheSun I was talking to Tim about that. It's doubtful the Mallorcan government would exclude overseas investment entirely after all that's their bread and butter. @@ltlawithamanda I wouldn't say they will exclude foreign investment entirely, but reported in the press have been suggestions that foreign investors will have to be residents here for a certain time frame. Time will tell if this goes ahead. Speaking from experience, it's just awful to see apartments being snapped up cheaply by overseas investors who come and visit a few times a year, leaving nowhere for actual residents to live. A line has to be drawn somewhere.

It is no big thing to avoid the tourist packed bits in Mallorca during the main season (although it's slowly creeping in at the mountains too). As regards buses, they are perpect if one avoids to travel at the tourists hours after 9:30 am and before 7 pm. You would go for pinchos before 8:30 pm either, when they have left. That said in the only-tourist towns on the coast, the ones deserted off season, you'll have problems to get on a bus - but who on earth goes there in the season). Happy new year to you too..

Thank you for this. Fallen in love with the place and heavily considering the move in the near future. I think the partying aspect really is subject to where you go in Mallorca. Palma Nova for instance can be just as busy in peak period and I would consider that area second in line to Magaluf with regards to partying, apologies if I am wrong that's just the impression I got. The cost of living aspect I believe has drastically changed, I found it a lot cheaper there compared to the UK now. Completely agreed with the car travel and public transport aspect. Lived in Mallorca for 12 years from 2001. Main things I disliked and not included in the video...1) Barking dogs! In many residential areas, people have "guard dogs" roaming their gardens and property. It is quite usual for constant barking from dogs. They do not seem to be controlled to the same extent as in UK, for example. 2) Be careful if purchasing a property with a "Community", as residents within these communities, having varying disposable incomes. As such, the ability to pay for maintenance, improvements, projects, etc, although usually controlled by an Administrator, can be fairly chaotic. 3)Driving/Parking. Many Local residents are not so careful driving their vehicles (as mentioned in the video), but also, are somewhat erratic when parking also...I always parked well away from other vehicles whenever possible to avoid bumps, scratches, etc, from irresponsible opening of doors, etc. There are not many cars (even newish) in Mallorca that are bump/scratch free! Having said all that, loved living there for the most part, and still revisit friends there whenever possible.

Hello Alan! How could I miss these points out. At some point I'll update my website article with these. I remember almost being driven from the place I'm living in now by a barking dog, and then they uped and left. I coudn't have been more happy! And also the whole community culture. The rules can be crazy! One thing I would never do here, no matter how much money I had, is own a new car either. The stress would be too much LOL!

I am a Spaniard and Mallorca is really one of the greatest places in Spain. I have been there in November and December besides summer, and some days the weather reminded me of Miami in winter (where I lived 5 years). I know the other Balearic islands too and my favourite is Menorca (not for living 365 days), but Mallorca has also La Sierra de Tramontana. Those mountains are a great place for hiking. By the way, once I had to drive along it with a quite thick layer of snow, so not all winter days are as in Miami. I understand this video is meant for a British audience, but I did not understand why "Friendship" is a problem. You can also make local friends, which won't move away. Is it difficult to approach locals in Mallorca?
@MallorcaUnderTheSun
@MallorcaUnderTheSun Жыл бұрын
Hi, I didn't actaully say I don't have local friends. I do! Also, my daughter's friends are mainly from the island. However we have found that often weekend is family time for our "local" friends as they do spend a lot of family time together. Expats, regardless of nationality have the commonality that most of us do not have other family on the island so we are naturally drawn together. We can't expect to be invited to our local friend's family gatherings!

Then the Young local people can't buy a home, while the British and German don't stop coming and buying. And the worst of all, on the end, most of then don't integrate with local society, instead learning spanish they force you to speak their languages perfecto... Now to sell apartments, clothes and furniture you must know languages... When they are businesses outside of tourism. It's crazy!!

A Canarian friend of mine has a Romanian wife and they occasionally take a holiday in Romania. Last spring on their way back to Gran Canaria they changed planes at Palma de Mallorca. They wanted a hotel room for one night near the airport, but decided to spend the night in the airport terminal as the cheapest room cost 300 euros. I'll come to Palma Nova next August, but it'll cost me more than a holiday in Thailand. Two weeks in Rhodes in a nice hotel costs about 1000 euros including the flight from Helsinki.

As a visitor, the driving standard is the one things i hate about the island. Locals just love to sit on your bumper, and what is it with roundabouts, everyone seems to use just the outside lane, no matter what exit they are taking. Not sure what they think the inside lane is for?
@BernardDonaldson

The Spanish are taught to drive that way (re roundabouts). It’s The safest way to use a roundabout over there.
@MallorcaUnderTheSun
@MallorcaUnderTheSun Жыл бұрын
Hahaha, I learnt the hard way not to use the inside lane on a roundabout or you may never leave. The rules are a bit different here. You can only exist if there is noone on the outside lane, hence why everyone sits in it. As for the bumper to bumper drivers. I literally hate that too, I always pull over and let them fly by. Life is too short.

Er wouldn't anyone who's moving abroad do their research or even rent for a while before committing to buying a property , its obvious that any seaside town is going to be very quiet during the winter months , what would people prefer living by the beautiful sea and resort or stuck in a tower block on a run down high crime estate 24-7 ?

Do you live near the ocean or more inland? Kind of figured some of those things since we've been living in Alicante(Moraira) and in a lot of regards is similar and gets crazy in the summer time. Hello, it's super hard to give advice in one comment. I really love living here - but as with everywhere, there are ups and downs to living in Mallorca too. What I would recommend is putting together a massive list of questions - everything you want to ask - and book a call with me. Email me on alex@mallorcaunderthesun.com and we can schedule. I do either half hour or one hour calls so I can tailor all the advice to your situation. And give you a few realities too from work, property, education, where to live, renting, culture, everything really. I've been living on the island for almost 19 years. I've worked here for a corporate global business, had a child here and now going it alone working on a freelance basis, so I've been through most experiences!

But real estate is bonkers. Basic 3 bed apartment - 500k. Basic house with a pool and parking - 1 mill. Anything really cool 3+mill. Oh and taxes went up. Self employed 30.6-50% with all the fees. We used to go to Australia in their summer and come back to Europe in ours for eternal summer living, but even that is quite complicated over the years. You can't ever enjoy high season. Too many on the beaches. Restaurants full. 2h wait for poor quality, hastedly put together food. Traffic everywhere. Shops full. 0 parking. Prices raised to catch the tourists. Costa del Sol even used to raise the toll road fees. The towns have to provide all roads, utilities and services for twice the normal population and that raises taxes for everybody throughout the year.

Different strokes for different folks.....!!! 🤷🤔 Thankfully Mallorca is trying to appeal to a much wider demographic. It was great to see more German, French, American, Scandinavian etc last season, in addition to Brits who just want "cheap".... I suppose you get what you pay for and cheap does not often promote quality but then again in cases neither does expensive. There are ways to do things cost effectively, that is for sure. It would be interesting to show this content to a local and get their view. "Hate" is a very strong word, "dislike" or " challenging" is better. By its definition, if the former be true then, with respect, why are you still living on the island. ??? Allegedly, you get more "bang for your buck" on the mainland but it is clear that the quality of your life in Mallorca outweighs heavily the "10" things you " dislike" si o no ?
