Mallory Park Crashes/Highlights, CSCC, 28/8/23

The conclusion of Mallorys shockingly short car racing season came courtesy of the CSCC. A mix of good grids and average grids (a clumsy Mag7's calendar did most of the damage) but still a great display, particularly from the Tin Tops and Turbo Tin Tops races which featured some spectacular fights for the lead, mixed in with the ever present Mallory Park weirdness and yet another DannyDC2 recovery drive. Brake failure for one very unlucky Honda driver into Gerards perhaps being the strangest occurance of the day, not just because I've never seen that happen in 20 years of going here, but because it is the 2nd brake failure here this year at a track that rarely if ever sees them, and both have been in a Honda. That being said the rest of the day was relatively calm, the odd clumsy move here and there resulting in a spin but that was about it. Once again we ask ourselves what does Mallory Park have to do to drag the car clubs here? The racing all year has been exceptionally close, nobody has lost a race (looking at you Oulton Park) and the feedback always seems positive from the drivers. At least CSCC and 750MC try to incorporate this place regularly. Lets hope for better next year, but we've been saying that for ages...

I was in the 42 Integra, total brake failure. That was a big hit, I hadn’t realised it had flicked round like that after it hit the wall

I've never seen that happen in 20 years going into Gerards. Very strange to see and couldn't have happened to a nicer car. Glad to see you walk away at least, I think the hole in the bank is testament to just how hard it hit!

Shame that Mallory's non-existent marketing means people have virtually forgotten that it exists. Crowds used to be 10 deep round the hairpin in the 70s & 80s and on the main bank along the start line.

The crowds for the Quick60 a few weeks before were great, it was run with the retro rides weekend show and was packed out. Good marketing and sensible pricing

It's a shame that when we were offered to do it a year ago we never heard anything more other than the initial offer! We had big plans for it as well. It could do with a kick up the arse marketing wise. It could easily draw in Castle Combe numbers and every now and then it does, but mainly just by chance.

@MrPaulb1969 For a while I've wanted to see Mallory put down some special events like that and I think it could easily do it. Quick60 does so well as it's paired with Retro Rides, but imagine a Retro Race Weekend with all the championships catering for 80s and 90s cars? Or something oval based to go with the Pickups? Or a big Modsports and Special Saloons festival featuring all of the UK's sports and saloon championships? There's some great ideas you could try here. I just wish someone would realise them and not let Brands Hatxh nick them all😂

Having brake failure at Mallory is so weird becuase you have to use the brakes about once

You feel Mallory struggles having Donington just down the road. It's a shame because it has some of the best racing, watching the historical minis there was amazing.

No disrespect to MSV but I prefer Mallory as spectator it's a real family friendly venue and as you say it produces some excellent racing.

Not really. It never struggled in the 90s when club racing was arguably at its peak, in fact I think it thrived alongside it tbh. Motorsport events in general though are suffering heavily with the amount of clashes, for example this weekends Caterham festival has moved to the shorter layout at Donington due to marshal shortage, an ever increasing problem. There was an interesting piece in Autosport last year about Mallory not seeing the post covid resurgence that highlighted opinions from some clubs that if I'm brutally honest were outright ridiculous, some even blaming cockups on the venue that were the fault of themselves. It's nothing new...

@bensingleton3923 Sadly the consideration for spectator numbers and engagement in club Motorsport I think died well over a decade ago. Unless it's Brands Hatch hosting Festival *insert name here* each week or Castle Combe (perhaps not so much with recent mistakes), everywhere else is not interested. Mallory has remained the most spectator friendly venue in the UK. Donington on the other hand has done nothing to address the huge spectator access issues it has had since reopening. In fact I'd argue it's gotten worse with MSV's involvement

@@PescaraProductions I'm still an oval racing fan at heart but this year I've done 6 circuit meetings half of which at Mallory so it shows how much I enjoy the venue. I can't see myself returning to the circuits till the plum pudding meeting.
