A lyrical masterpiece that paints a picture so vivid, not many artists even come close to it in terms of matching the unparalleled symbolism, word-play, and downright perfect production of those albums. So yes he is an artist. Weeknd is in my top 3 ever but he is yet to join the league Kanye is in, and this is with me conceding the fact that kanye's recent albums have been shit. The bar set by kanye's previous albums is so high that his overall GOAT status can never be questioned as an artist. However, music is obviously subjective so it's really just my opinion.

I love the album, but im pretty sad that so many "XO" fans dont appreciate his stuff and always want him to come back to his old style, even though he is providing us with such high quality music. I feel like as XO fans we need to let go of our expectations, cuz abel reinvents himself on every project and we should appreciate the variety in his discography rather than compare his new stuff to his old stuff.

That’s a great point. Often times people critique artists for not evolving their sound. And now Abel’s fans are criticizing him for that evolution! I think if he tried to recreate his old sound, people would compare it and be disappointed if it’s not as good as his original stuff. So I 100% support Abel’s direction.

Yes! And if he were to only stick to his old style it’d get tired after a while. It’d get repetitive and feel like something we’ve already heard a dozen times. And I don’t want to get bored of him. whole 9!!! the best out been waitin on this. love yalls breakdown for sure. I think the one angle a lot of people are missing is this album being about not the regret of just a failed relationship, but being a metaphor for his career as a whole. we all know Weeknd started as dark as you can start lol. we know just how grimey trilogy got. I think this album is him hinting at wanting to move on from “The Weeknd”. he even mentioned wanting to seperate from The Weeknd name in a print interview last year but “the stories not done yet.” The old man is him being worn from all the destruction, drugs, ego, meaningless sex, it’s drained him. In the Gasoline video his younger self is beating this older, regretful, wiser self to death out of sheer fear and regret. he’s not ready to face his sins. When you look at it like this a lot of songs have a double meaning: (How Do I Make You Love Me? - will they love me without the drugs?- Take My Breath - being consumed by temptation/drugs , Sacrifice - not wanting to give up the night life, etc) when you look at how he referenced his career as early as Rolling Stone it’s not too far fetched. After Hours being apart of this new “trilogy” can looked at in the frame too. Great album overall. XO / WHOLE 9️⃣

It was great to hear your perspectives on this project, getting so deep on the first listen. I can count on my hands how many albums I know that can flow so cognitively, that I can listen from beginning to end with full intentiveness and appreciate something new every time. And this is undoubtedly one of them. Phantom Regret by Jim is a poem that can speak volumes to what can represent great significance in different times of people's lives. When you're 25 and just starting to figure out what who you really are. When you're 50 and you're trying to figure it out all over again. When you're 75 and you want to feel content in the journey that lead to who you became. But can you in the end? It all connects to the final line. *You've got to be heaven, to see heaven.* Peace from within is the key to all. This is an incredible project that will comfortably sit in my crate of favourite records of all time.

I think this whole album represents reflecting back on your life, and letting go of the past, as you enter heaven. Kinda how ppl say you relive your whole life before you enter the afterlife. Phantom Regret kinda solidified that for me.

Damn, nobody else I saw pointed out the purgatory concept that might be going on. Definitely agree with y'all on that and especially with Jim saying "you have to wait here when you're not all there yet". Him being in purgatory with his own regrets and constantly looking back at his mistakes instead of just being free. I feel like the concept is Abel's way of freeing himself from his regrets and getting a lot of emotional stuff off his chest. It's so much more than most pop arena albums out there. Such amazing production and no missing beats, everything is full and he seemed to take full advantage of everybody who worked on it. Super good reaction and analysis guys!

I've listened to this album so many times now, yet hearing you guys break it down and talk about what it means to you is very entertaining. Your guys' commentary adds a lot to the album. I think that's my favorite part, is the fact that the album can be taken literally, or metaphorically. That leaves people with their own feelings towards the message/story of the album/trilogy. Also, your guys' ad-libs during some songs were just goofy as hell and I love it.

I think also that the heaven/hell theme is a reflection of his happiness in a sense. Him not being able to move on from these regrets keeps him depressed aka in hell. But until he learns to let go, he won’t be happy/in heaven

I was late to liking this album, first couple listens I thought it was critically good but not enjoyable for me, but with each listen I find a new thing that i love, currently it’s the transitions between Best friends, Is there someone else, and starry eyes. It truly is, as every weeknd project, a masterpiece.
