Malo: Latin Bugaloo (recollections) [Part V: El Fin]

About a decade ago, an attempt was made to tell the story of Latin Rock group Malo.
A formidable force boasting over 30 musicians during the course of their first four albums.
Initially, some key interviews were made before the project fell through.
Rather then have interviews collect dust in an archive never to be seen again, you can hear various recollections spliced together for your enjoyment.
Digging into boxes and grabbing a few things from the net, you can hear these legends sharing views of the past.
The working title was "Xochipilli's Dream"...bit of a tongue twister, and probably would have changed, but that's what you find when you dust things off.
Part 5 features Arcelio Garcia Jr., Pablo Tellez, Abel Zarate, Chris Wong, Willie G, & David Rubinson

I appreciate so much Malo, and the Latin music they produced. Pana, Nena, Latin Boogaloo, so many wonderful songs! My youth was graced with the sounds of this wonderful group of musicians.

Thanks very much Daniel for trying so hard to explain & to tell some sides of the whole story. I feel there are many musicians who did not participate & whose take would have added more depth to the story. MALO remains the soundtrack of my youth,at 68 I keep playing Latin Rock. Malo,Azteca,Sapo,Santana The Latin sound of SF forever.

Grow up Listening to malo l became a big fan of Malo after there were broken up .l Was 9 years old my Mother Record Collection was my Libery to music Santana Azteca el Chicano the Doors Chicago the Beatles and so many more .l love all 4 of Malo Albums but my favorite is still by fare Accession Jorge Santana guitar playing is magical. MALO is For ever and Ever!! Loved the video great interview and stores hope a new generation discovers this Great Band and there music to thank its been 51 years since Malo made Music History!!

I am also forever thankful and grateful to the founding members of MALO and their incredible much beloved music. 1972 seems like a long time ago; however, I continue to be emotionally connected to the sound of that first album. Thank you Daniel Meza for this true labor of love. That was an amazing time for music, especially for a kid growing up in San Francisco. My three favorite groups were Santana, Malo, and Tower of Power, in no particular order, they were always spinning on my record player and shaking the walls of my house. If I had to pick only one record from those days it's Malo's 1st, no question. It, and they, had it all.

Reat easy Jorge and Arcelio. I truly understand what David and Abel are saying about lack of direction and continuity. I definitely noticed the major change fron "Malo" to "Dos". Then another major change to "Evolution" and then "Ascension". Despite all of that---l love all of these albums Now l'll say this---Pablo Tellez remains sort of vague when he makes his comments about the band whereas Arcelio and Abel are more direct in their opinions. It seems that in the end Willie Garcia just got tossed into the mire

Gracias Daniel and kudos to you for an excellent piece of work which certainly filled in many gaps in my understanding of this group and its surroundings...and I grew up in the middle of it [but in a little ag town 4.5 hours south]...and began playing percussion at age 14 largely due to these influences...a few years behind the group but inspired by the music. The good news is that we have recordings, video and documentaries to archive this splendid era whose epicenter was the SF Mission District...looking forward to your next project.

Bombing DOES NOT MEAN artistic failure; as a matter of fact, bombing may imply and reveal great artistic success. The music is what matters in the end. Money is only ego, but the music is forever. The fourth album is fucking beautiful.

Money 💴 tends to mess things up for most artists, bands musicians etc… I wonder what would have happened if they all were compensated and money was never an issue would the original band cut more great albums? Guess we’ll never know but what they did put out is still played that speaks volumes!! I’m so glad this Documentary was made

This was excellent. Interesting that Jorge declined to participate in this. I love his guitar playing. One gets the impression that he and Pablo Tellez outvoted Arcelio on crucial business matters regarding the band. David Rubinson has some great insights into the band as well in this episode. Yes, the original Malo did not realize their full potential. Too many personnel changes. Yet all four albums do have outstanding tunes.

The fact that Jorge Santana would not go on camera, takes a away a huge part of what is really the True story Facts, there were obviously some very bad decisions Mistakes made and another major factor that is never discussed is who owned the rights to the name Malo, my understanding is that Jorge owned the name and Arcelio's name is second on the registration according to Jorge's mother who told me the story on how this happened ! I walk away from this, thinking that there was never Really a Malo, just an oasis of Different Musicians at different times, the other factor here is after Richard Bean was Fired, it was Leo Rosales who became the lead singer of the hit single Suavecito, not Arcelio Garcia, which I think he thought he would be, but the Record company Warner Bros did not think he sang well enough to sing this song !
