Loving the branding and style of the Malt Mates releases and all about "dunnage cookies". I personally am more on the meaty peaty side then the ashy smoke team. Normally going hand and hand, always great to find one leaning more one side than the other. Cheers.

The Rock Oyster / Island vattings from DLaing come to mind as peaty but not smoky whiskies too, once they open up a little.

It’s well worth the try. Interesting. Talking about peat and smoke. Two days ago we came back from our trip to Scotland. Islay was the absolute highlight. We visited 7 out of the 9 distilleries. In fact the production proces is almost the same everywhere but at Bowmore Kathryn let us on the malting floors. Never done that at a distillery before. And we turned the malt also by hand. Real fun but labourintensive. And the warehouse tasting at lagavulin was next to meeting lovely people from several countries really stunning. The ones we didn’t visited were ardnahoe and kilchoman. So bowmore lagavulin Ardbeg coal ila laphroaig bunnahabhain and bruichladdich we did. Islay was the main course. Edinburgh ive seen before but still one hell of a appetizer. For dessert we went to Falkirk and Sterling and bannockburn. We had a fantastic 2 weeks. Slainthe

I'm glad you had such a good time! And you managed to do many of them - well done ☺️ How was the weather on the island?

@@swedishwhiskygirl the weather was splendid. Lots of sun and very little clouds in the sky. We had only one day of rain. On our way to bruichladdich distillery. The walk over there was superb despite the rain. The surroundings were beautiful. This was a vacation was absolutely fantastic. Also Falkirk and Sterling was very interesting. Historywise. William Wallace monument and Callender house and the Falkirkwheel and of course the kelpies. Enormous works of art and ingenuity. Als Edinburgh was great to see again. Lovely holiday. Slainthe

@@swedishwhiskygirl the weather was perfect. Lots of sun, very little clouds. Only one day of rain. The weather in the Netherlands was bad during our stay in Scotland. One day we got lucky because we could visit the bunnahabhain distillery. A couple from USA passed us by while we were walking to coal ila. They felt so bad for not picking us up. So they asked us to join them for their 300£ tasting. So we tasted a 46yo bunna from a 5000£ bottle. We had a great time us four. Also met the owners of the high coast distillery. In a pub and later in port askaig.

Basically for me, smoky is the nose, peaty is the palate. The more earthy side of peat especially I would describe as peaty not smoky.

You are correct, there are only Smoky malts. If you were unfortunate to taste peat, I assure you it would be disgusting.

I would say smoky = smoke, peaty = all the tarry plant oils imbued from the smoke

to me, ardbeg is more on the smoky side and port Charlotte is more on the peaty side😊
