As a former Maltby Grammar School pupil 1954-59 its so sad to see the main building going to ruin. As a Dinnington lad there was nothing for me there except the Pit so left and have never returned. Married a Maltby girl in 1970 and then both of us left the area forever. To see these once proud pit villages reduced to what they are today, and I include Thurcroft in that mix, is little short of pitiful and no political party will ever change the rate of urban decay that has occurred. Thank you Tim for another excellent insight into the local scene.

There used to be an indoor market at Maltby. It was one of the few mining towns where the pit was well outside the town and they had a bus service to and from it. The people in the new houses at Hellaby will shop in Morrisons and come and go on the motorway, won't even go into Maltby.

@@timawells same as Renishaw, they built a new estate on the old iron works, fenced it all off, one road in one road out, that's how they design them now, separate the yuppies from the locals that live on the pit prefab council estate over the road. They drive in and out from the motorway, junction 30 M1 and try to distance themselves from the locals, never go in the pub or club and say they live at Spinkhill bottom!

@@timawells Tim, any chance you can do a video showing the total green belt destruction, basically from Oldcoats through to Langold, all the way to Worksop on the A60. There is farmers fields been built on both sides of the road all the way through. It started round the back of Eckington, opposite Renishaw Hall, they developed a field into houses then Shireoaks, as you go in from the A57, on the right used to be a bench overlooking nice fields. They removed the bench and built houses all over it. Now they have doubled the size of Langold. Built on green belt. The scale of the development all the way on is staggering, you have to see it for yourself. I've never seen anything like it along the A60.

@@richardburns5925 I didn't know about it Richard. I do know about the stuff going ahead on Gateford road Worksop. I will have to get out on the A60 and have a look.

@@timawells yes Tim, it starts from the B6463 Dinnington turn off the A60, that field on the right going towards Langold, I used to see Red Kite's hovering over the field, not now, developments all the way to Worksop.

I think the town centre was originally around the church. Big flight of stairs and gas lamp I missed. Guy confirmed it was a horse trough and he would clean it, natural spring.

I never had much to do with Maltby, but the coffee shop at the Full Life church was nice when I used to go a few years ago. As with everywhere there have been shop closures in Maltby, but its probably not as bad as, say, Rotherham town centre.

Not from Maltby but drive through regularly. The site on the right at 11:30 where the fire station was is going to become a Lidl I think. Hopefully something is done about Maltby Comprehensives derelict old main building. I agree the high street is in a pretty sorry state at the moment.

Was the fire station or the school building behind the blue boards?

@@timawells it was the fire station. The school building is still there next to the new school building but its been derelict for about a decade now.

@@misscoutts6193 yes they built a new building behind the old one and abandoned it about a decade ago. A shame, I like the old building.
