Malzahar is one of the characters i used to rly enjoy playing with friends, cause im still not the best at microing the game and am not a pre by any means, my skill level is somewhere around gold or silver, and my friends are all like emerald+. Its easy if im doing good or bad in a game to still help shut down the problem child on the enemy team as Malz, and hes rly easy to farm with. (For the record, league has caused so many problems in my friendship, and the community is arguably the worst in ANY GAME EVER, that i dont enjoy playing the game at all anymore.)

The knife is rooted in his old lore (I think). It links back to an old short story that details how he used his psychic abilities as a knife thrower. He'd pick someone from the crowd to volunteer and then throw knife at targets that were very close to them. Because of his psychic abilities he could see in the future that he wouldn't hit them. But one day the knife missed and he ended up killing the participant. This taught him that even he can't predict the future with 100% certainty. After this he quit the street performances and kept the knife as a reminder to never overestimate his powers. I think it's cool they kept the knife even if it's not really part of his lore anymore

I'm sorry for everyone how even had to play with/against me when I played Malzahar, but after soling so many games, I just don't want to get stressed, I just want to press things and do shit. So here's an idea that just occurred to me, what if we leaned in to the idea that Malzahar isn't that corrupted? Belveth chose to corrupt Malzahar in order to transform him into a slave, but she didn't want to make him monstrous to allow him to infiltrate into human society, so instead she corrupted only his mind, leaving the eye in his forehead as the only way to identify him as corrupted. This way you can make him an even bigger parallel to Kassadin, while Malzahar appears mostly human he is completely gone, while Kassadin remains sane but with most of his body corrupted. And that way the current clothes of Malzahar could be replaced by a more ostentatious outfit, and his role would be that of a cult leader that build a religion around worshipping Belveth

Malz is my favorite champ. Some find it boring, but I find his gameplay more chill and relaxing. He farms easy, he can be very safe in most matchups, and when he's got his Rylai's he becomes mostly unstoppable in a 1v1 if you just stay away from the enemy while the void AIDS slows. All that without even going into how game changing his ult can be. Also I love pet champs in general and the voidlings are pretty good pets. Not the best (that's probably Tibbs or Daisy), but still a good bunch of babies.

They actually already reworked malz to be more minion centric. Old Malz had his minions as his passives, where it summoned them every third spell cast. His old W was the pool that appears in his ult now.

I've been a Malzahar player since season 3 when I started and I initially loved him because purple mage man look but I also loved his lore of being the ultimate nihilist, made him kind of interesting in my opinion. I can understand why people would find him boring from a gameplay, lore and design standpoint. Although I do feel that him still remaining more human helps him fit more as a parallel to Kassadin, I like how Kassadin's body has felt the void corruption where as Malzahar's mind is corrupted. I also think him being more human suits him as he is a prophet so I feel like his more human appearance kind of helps as way to more easily induct people into his cult. On a gameplay standpoint though, I felt Malz has just got worse over time, I used to love AD malz back in season 3-4 and eventually they just fully killed it, he has like no build diversity and with the mage rework they made him so much more of a press r bot. I may be in the minority but I really want Malz reverted to pre-mage rework era(Which I know will never happen). [On a side note: my favorite champions on Yone, Malzahar and Zed and I cant wait to get to them to hear Nicky rip them apart, I love hearing his opinions on champions because they are usually pretty opposite to mine lmao]

Malzahar has always been one of my favorite champs to play. On one hand he feels like a very honest combo burst mage without any overly complicated mechanics, and on the other hand he is a scummy splitpusher and click-R-to-win button presser, but at his core no matter how you play him, he's a fairly chill champ to play as. With a bunch of other mages you might need to try harder to get your combos and spells off correctly, but you can play him in a lot more relaxed way which can be a cozy way to unwind.

I actually enjoyed playing Malzahar a lot before Vex launched, because imagine this: Playing in low elo and always having the same enemy midlaners, that dive you and win without skill, but now you can have even less skill by pressing R and win instead. Malzahar is one of the only reasons I come back to league sometimes. I think his playstyle is really fun. Enemy can't farm or they get the space aids. Enemy cant get close to you or they get the space aids. Enemy can't land their skill shots cuz you got voidlings in front of you. Enemy can't dive you or they'll get suppressed. Its peak void gameplay. Right up there with Cho'gath in my book. Solid CC, good harass, hard to punish. The only reason his spellshield is necessary as a passive is simply that the game is so hyper mobile now, and malz has no mobility. I miss the good old days when his voidlings were his passive, and his w was a damage pool. It just had more skill expression. Needing to cast in at the right times in the right order to maximize spell usage and not summon your voidlings at the wrong time. Having to manually synergize your ult and w pool. I like being able to summon minions manually, but i feel like he lost something when that change came about. Still one of my favorite characters. He really needs an ASU though. Hell, even just new voicelines. On the other hand, though, he's associated with bel'veth now, much to my displeasure, so i'm sure any new changes would take him in a direction i hate.

I definetly would change at least 1 ability. I wish something would grant you vision of somewhere in fog of war, leaning into the prophet side. Like an extra temporary blue orb except it just reveals a small area for 5 seconds (global with a 30 second cooldown or something) and players can see what area hes revealing

Malzahar is my go-to first mid pick. It lets me keep the lane generally and keeps the enemy from getting too cocky post 6 since a flash ult under my tower is enough to shift the advantage. That said junglers exist and will camp my lane so idk, maybe I'm just bad at Malz. But his ult is fun in the sense that you pick someone and tell them not to fucking move an inch and they have to sit there, thinking about what they did.

I am fond of playing Malzahar, because I prefer the lax nature of his gameplay. I like his visual design and concept alot. Most of my games are also beridden with enemies splitpushing or one enemy being the one that destroys my entire team - guess who perfectly stops both of these things. Not to mention how great Malzahar is at sieging towers with his voidlings tanking tower or doing the damage on it while the siege minion's still alive. Also, whenever I play midlane, I usually focus on helping the jungler by playing characters like TF or Lissandra, going out of my way to set up my jungler their kills. As Malzahar, I often build utility and movement items over damage items, because the rest of my team can bring in the pain, I just go for anything that's missing on our team. I mean, I've built Shurelya's and Rylai's on him more so than I have stuff like Liandry's or Blackfire Torch, without really losing much, since through teamfights and pushes I get my items fast. In lane I often crash the wave and then go counter jungle the opponent lmao, works wonderfully quite often. FYI, if I'm playing midlane, my duo is usually a jungle carry.

Malzahar is my most played champ with over 700k. For me I was fascinated with him the first time I ever laned against him. I'm a simple sucker for edgy dark corrupt type characters. His sound effects on his E sounded so cool. Commanding voidlings is fun, and his R is just such a fun addition to his dark powers. Gameplay-wise my fav version of Malz was the original rework, because it had more diversity in what he could do, but unfortunately Support Malzahar meta ruined that. As for general gameplay, I love being able to just rotate to a wave, throw down E and voidlings and walk away for faster rotation. And Malz for me really comes online when you have 2 items, 1 being Rylais. Kiting opponents with his DOT slows + voidling attacks apply the slows. And Q resets E duration, so you can really mess with your opponent, stalling out the DOT to get them low enough for an all in with R. Hilarious and satisfying gameplay to me. And yes, Malz mains love when people complain about R to win.

I used to be a mid lane mage player and my style of playing mages has always been the 'anti-fun' style. I'll play Xerath, Vel'Koz, and Malz purely because I can sit back and force the plethora of wind brothers and assassin fans to get bored. A bored assassin or wind brother is easily abused (Less so with Yone because of his E mechanic) and easily baited under tower. With Malz it's even funnier to me. They force themselves into my territory and I hit them with the Domain Expansion, Outplay Button and watch them suffer under tower for 2.5 seconds. The tilt was real some days.

As a Malz main (when I DO get filled mid) for me it's not about "fantasy" I just enjoy the fact I can be safe and have my E and voidlings get wave while Yasuo thinks he's skillful trying to Windwall my Q. I personally like Malz because he's SAFE. Did Zed ult you? Well now you're in MY ult, bozo! I don't think anyone can say Malz is a SKILLED character, but I like him because unlike so many of his peers he has ZERO mobility whatsoever and his ult CCs HIM too technically. Again, not saying it's a skillful move, but it HAS A DOWN SIDE! He's a character with obvious, exploitable weaknesses and you just dont get that with your Fizz untargetability, Veigar baby cage, or Katarina dashes. He's a simple, flawed character with a passive assassins and other mages always get as an item anyways. I think he's 'babys first burn mage' and as far as the play style goes it isnt ENTHRALLING GAMPLAY but it's nice knowing whatever assassin you're against has to give half a thought to you shutting them down if they hard engage.

As a Malzahar main, I'm also not too pleased with his current state, and I think his passive is the worst change he ever got. Aside from his Q, which is okay, his E is the one ability I wouldn't change. I'm not sure what's possible with Riot's spaghetti code, but I'd love to see a higher focus on voidlings. Letting him spawn more and maybe tying their damage to their distance from him. Maybe also being able to sacrifice his active voiding for a shield based on how many were sacrificed. I'd even be willing to toss out his current ult for better overall synergy. I just know they won't touch him for a long time because he's not on the radar.

I played a lot of Malzahar after getting shitted on playing Azir. Reason behind this,is that because of how safe and easy is character,u feel absolute chill, especially because I always played him in casuals and just not gave any shit about opponent safely farming and trying to help team if can. Just absolute chill on your side,but yeah, against good player u gonna be useless in any circumstance,but mostly I also love to make assasin lives even more miserable. I find malzahar fun because CSing is the best form of income in the game, and the reward for doing so is fantastic

10:20 its like malphite, the thought of just pressing R on someone, and watch as they die without being able to do anything, its just.... cinema. And for that purpose, malzahar is perfect, got too close? E, and R if past 6, now burn to death. Got too close again? Q to reset E's duration, and if it already expired E them AGAIN. wave? what wave? towers? WHAT towers? Playing malzahar isnt always fun or very interesting, but once in a few games, there is that one match, where you are as annoying as possible and that just makes up for it all

While garen gets the goofy and simple treatment, malzahar gets the boring and simple treatment. Both characters have point end click cc and keeps you trapped until the win fight button does it's job, but garen just has more fun tied into his reputation. I feel like it is directly tied to how riot designs mages and mage items

All the reasons you gave for hating malzahar are why I like him lmao. I like DoT and just watching my enemies burn. His ult is such a fun “no” button

I personally don't like malz either playing him or against him but when I do end up playing him in stuff like aram the little enjoyment I get from playing him is using his q and r to reset the e duration and watching people panic as they burn for 10+ seconds for seemingly no reason. I also don't think hes really reliant on burn items as much as someone like brand is because unlike brand malz actually has solid ap ratios on the skills that actually matter.

The fun of malzahar is tilting the enemy diver or adc and they can't do anything because they haven't bought a qss

Personally, i just like disease type spell craft. Malefic visions spreading after a target dies and doing damage overtime is perfect for that aesthetic. It could only be better if it spread to ALL targets in range, but that could never be balanced.
