Some things I've learned about Brazil on here: 1. There are a lot of armed criminals. 2. There are a lot of off duty cops. 3. There are cameras everywhere.

Shawn W I live 6 months per year in Brazil for the past 4-5 years. Yes, robberies happen. Robberies can happen here in the US as well. Brazil can be dangerous, but I don’t think it’s as dangerous as a lot of media portrays it to be.
@KonaLife4 жыл бұрын
Joe Talaga I have no doubt that it isn’t completely lawless, but the high rate of these types of crimes caught on security cameras (not your run of the mill media), lead me to believe that it isn’t very safe in major metro areas like São Paulo and Rio. Hard pass on me for traveling there.
@JoeTalaga4 жыл бұрын
Shawn W that’s really a shame, because Brazil is an awesome place, but I totally see where you’re coming from. The border is closed to non-residents right now anyway, so you wouldn’t be able to go even if you wanted to hahaha. I live in São Paulo and haven’t had any issues, but I’m also smart about things. I’m always watching my surroundings and I don’t carry lots of stuff. I try not to walk alone at night in strange places. In the end, a thief just wants your stuff, so if you do happen to get mugged, you give them your stuff and they go away. Maybe I have a different outlook on things because I live there half the year and speak the language. Living in a nice neighborhood helps too. :D If you do one day reconsider, I recommend someplace like southern Brazil. It’s much more calm and safe in places like Florianópolis.

But I will agree with the first part of your sentence; "Being a victim is a big thing" but I will leave off the rest. There are definitely those who carry around a victim mentality and use it as an excuse for not moving forward and making positive changes but I know people who aren't even aware of how they act and why, e.g. a woman who changes her voice inflection from sounding normal to suddenly sounding like a little girl. These women were abused when they were very young and often don't even realize why they talk in that little girl voice. There are plenty of examples but yeah, I'm not condoning people walking around with that victim mentality. I didn't mean to give that impression.

I just watched an interview she did with a podcaster. According to her, this is what happened: 1 - It was mother´s day party, and she wasn´t sure if she was going to take her gun or not. 2 - The lady in gray that crossed the screen in the beginning just walked away from an attempted mugging by this same perp. 3 - She passes by and points backwards and said: he is a mugger. 4 - By the time the off duty cop saw him, the perp was already pointing a gun at them. 5 - She knew she had to wait her turn, and she had to go because she knew that if the perp found out she was a cop she was going to get shot. 6 - When the perp had all his attention on the security guard, she decided to act. She closed the distance because she wanted to make sure no one cross in front of her line of fire, and also to make sure she would not miss the shot. She was aware there were a lot of people around. 7 - She said she always has the gun setup in her purse in a way that she does not need to look inside to find it. Just putting her hands inside the purse would allow her to touch the gun and get a good grip on it.

@@dijonmustard3203 To give her the benefit of doubt, she was completely aware and likely thought her daughter was as well and would just follow her away from the danger. That maybe incorrect, but I can certainly see that as a possibility. Watch the linked KZbin video if you want to see a completely cluless mother. Its of an armed robbery in cell phone store. There were two employees and one customer with a baby in a stroller. The employees brilliantly ended up locking the perp inside the store and waited for the cops to arrive. But what was insane to me was how slow the mother is to react. she seems so completely casual. The guy has his gun out demanding money and walking behind the counter. The employees make for the door while the mother just stands there watching like its an episode of Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood. And when she finally does decide to do something, her first step is to put things back into her purse! Then to get the hell out of there, she very, very slowly and carefully turns the stroller around to face the door, then (painful to watch) slowly, very slowly (like she is walking through the park on a Sunday afternoon in May) pushes it out the door with one of the employees holding the door open and likely dying inside.. "What the Hell! Come on! Can you please just hurry up a little bit! Damn!" kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZOYcqZuoJp_la8 Some people just don't get it. I worked as a manager in a restaurant in Independence MO and was robbed after close one night. We drilled our employees all the time concerning safety, but that night my young cashier was completely oblivious. It was just her and I left in there. The idea was for me to open the door to let her out and watch as she went to her car, with silent alarm in hand (company policy). Then once she gets to her car safely and gets it going, ready to leave, the person was to blink her lights so I know all is well, then I would exist. This procedure was done nightly and everyone knew what they were to do and why. If I was jumped leaving, the employee was to just drive away and call for help. If the employee was jumped, I was to push the silent alarm if possible but in either case I was to cooperate with the bad guy. The idea was to keep everyone more safe. If the bad guy knew and employee escaped, they may still rob us, but would be less likely to hurt me (in theory, of course). And if we were both in danger, the idea was that police would be on the way... LOL! Yeah, right. Well that night I checked all the areas visible, then as I opened the door I caught site of a guy crouching just around the corner. My cashier was walking out. I grabbed her arm and said, "Get back in!" And she fought me! She pulled away and then took a full step away from the damn doorway and said, "Why? What?" I quickly stepped out and grabbed her arm again and forcibly yanked her back through the door, but it was too late. The guy was moving towards us and grabbed the door before it could close. Lucky for us the guy was just a robber and not a murderer. He didn't even seem to be panicked in any way. The guy was as cool as a cucumber, like this was just his part time night job. I was able to hit the alarm at some point (it was a pendent design with dual push buttons on either side , but the guy was gone in about 12 minutes, cleaning out our timed safe that took 10 minutes to unlock... the most uncomfortable 10 minutes of my life. About 30 seconds after the guy hit the door (push bar exits) I heard the sirens in the distance. After it was all over, I was looking at my employee and was thinking, "What the hell is wrong with you?"

One; link your sources. I'd recommend using the FBI Crime database, since it's an official record. Two, you're basing this off stuff from 2007? And hey guess what; in a nation of over 327mil people; yeah there's going to be more murders(I doubt you're just looking at murders that only involve firearms though). However, the vast majority of murders do not involve 'friends and family'. Americans enjoy their guns; but they're not making it a point to murder friends and family. I'd rather live in a society where defending yourself is a right with a very low risk that a friend or family member will murder me; than live in a nation that doesn't allow me to properly defend myself, my family, and my property.

I’m gonna make up a term to talk about how critical mental agility is: “speed of transition”. Some people can switch gears fast-and it can be learned, but requires effort. We are bopping along and just living, right? And danger flashes in out of nowhere. MOST if us freeze because we can’t believe it is happening (unless we live in Brazil). We run through more benign explanations like “it’s a crazy person” or “its a joke” because it’s less scary. So accepting the reality slows us down and cripples us. But the speed of transition from enjoying another day to full battle mode-WOW impressive. Saved the day. Of course being a cop helps.

Jim Roton Depends on the situation. They are usually pretty burley and tuff in Brazil. Not usually wise enough to be allowed to carry imo. Protection from a street crackhead atleast. More protection = big money.. and then they would just be targeted for their weapon.

I initially saw this video on Facebook and saw where a guy commented saying 'Why did she need to shoot him? Her life was not in danger. . . I hope she has a lot of money in that purse for a lawyer. . . ' and a lot of people were 'liking' the comment. It is absolutely absurd of anyone to even think this wasn't a justified shooting. When someone aims a gun at you or those around you, they are immediately a deadly threat. What was she supposed to do? Wait on the robber to shoot?

It's because here they use a lot of fake guns or guns without bullets to only scare and steal the person.

He died there in the street. And in his last moments he had a surprised-scared look on his face as he looked down the street. She even saw it and looked down the street also but nothing there. He saw something wicked on his way to Hell. So be it.

Point blank. All are fortunate here. IMO, God alone kept bullet from passing through and hitting mom & little girl behind dude. It was a blur for sure, but man, would have sucked had 7 yr old girl and mom caught lead as well.
