We have all been through this situation, when you lend a friend a lot of money, and all of a sudden we become the bad guys when we ask them for the money back. How do you handle situations like these?

Thanks for having this session being discussed. I think this session really wakes me up from lending to family members or friends. Especially family members which until now, they have not talked to or visited my family. I need to have the courage to call them to ask about their financial situation. Thank you.

Well said Jin! I agree with what you said throughout the podcast regarding "pinjam-ing" money to people. We deserve to know where our money go to when we are the one providing it!

Agree to everything mentioned in this ep. related to lending/borrowing money. Watching this actually reminded me of a personal experience, not exactly lending or borrowing but kind of similar in a way; how they won't hesitate to choose friends over some money. I have friends who instantly said yes when I invited them to my wedding in Jakarta all the way from Los Angeles and they paid all the travel expenses themselves (to be fair I'd do the same for them in a heartbeat as well). It's just heartwarming to have these people in my life :)

My parents taught me from young... *NEVER NEVER* borrow or lend money from/to friends. In this world, there's no such thing as brotherhood. More like *friends with benefits* . A few times I borrowed but these people *HILANG diri* . They will put up an act to show how kolien they are. Now I learn one thing.... I act more kolien then them... HAHAHAHA.... P/s: Jin, your mom is *WISE*

$ always corrupts all relationships(friends, family, siblings, even spouse/parents/kids). Always set clear expectations if it is a loan and when they are going to settle with clear timeline vs leaving things vague and subject to misinterpretations.

A friendship is as the same as business partners. You guys have goals in life and youd like to help them to reach their goals. You love them and trust them. And the deals you guys make must be kept coz thats what friends do. If they cant be trusted something small with money, how are you going to trust them with something big? If you cant trust them, why do you need that person in your life?

To Kumar, yes money/financial elements are so ingrained in Chinese culture to that extent that we actually greet each other "Gong Xi Fat Chai" during Chinese New Year (the 4 words literally mean "Wish you have a prosperous future/Congratulation for being prosperous"). Besides, we have some proverbs like 未雨綢繆 (save for rainy days), 居安思危 (think of potential crisis during peaceful time). As for this Mamak session, I personally think that money borrowing/lending issues discussed here is the superficial problem that is underlain by boundary issues (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_boundaries). Yes, if we don't handle it well, it affects our mental health because it is one of the psychological tasks that we are constantly face when we are dealing with our social ties or interpersonal relationship. I assuming it is hard for Asian or Malaysia in this case, is that we are living in collective society here (Malaysia) where personal boundary is seldom discussed and emphasized (individuality is not the core of a collective society).

Every time when the topic of money comes up, I would avoid because the greed which makes us to have something more. But on the good side, we need to know how much that we need to save. Like for me, I witnessed my classmates in primary school, they borrowed money and the next day, he/she asked back that money, that student go all like "Why you're that kind of person?" Now thinking back, we have to return money on time

If large sums of money is involved, It is always wise to put up a legal contract. At least there will be an official date for you to ask them about it. Friend or no friend.
