Mamamoo Reaction - Hwasa's Guilty Pleasure

In ‘I’m a B’ Hwasa plays with words again, the Korean title is “I’m a 빛 “ it means “I’m a light” but 빛 sounds like bitch in English. "When I concentrate on working on music, I often torture myself and become quite hysterical" Hwasa said. "That is why I used the b-word to describe myself in the tune, asking people for some understanding. On top of that, I also believe I am the light of my own life." She added "I think I missed out on a lot of things in my life as I worked too hard to move forward… I also did not take good care of people next to me and I felt guilty about that. Therefore, I wanted to express these feelings with the song." The initial scene can be compared to a birth, plus Hwasa has the same dress used in Maria, connecting the two mvs and themes as Maria was like a rebirth to her and the water (another recurring theme) represents life. When she opens the door the scene is like watching inside that box she came out but as you can see everything is black outside instead inside the box is bright because Hwasa is the light. As we will see later there are 2 Hwasa, one watching inside the box and one actually inside of it “there’s no light without shadow” as Hwasa said. The whole mv and lyrics are playing with dark and bright, white and black, you can clearly see it in this part “life is so incredible. Even if I go crazy my sin is beautiful” then “life is now so terrible I can’t cry even if I smile”. Her sin is beautiful because she’s doing what she loves, music, but she feels like she’s sinning because she’s ‘mistreating’ herself and the people she loves. This is her guilty pleasure: pushing herself beyond her limits. We can spot flowers in the whole mv, the pictures in the blue room, she’s wrapped under plastic like a flower in a bouquet and in the room with white furnitures, the only touch of color are the flowers…Hwasa loves flowers and her symbol is a flower. Talking about this room, in Maria mv Hwasa wearing a sort of straitjacket was monitored in a white tiles room, she was cornered by pencils (comments) pointing at her…now she’s free standing bold on those white tiles furnitures, this time she has a pencil in her hand and she’s completing a crossword with ‘Hwasa’ and ‘Crazy’. Basically she’s saying I’m crazy, so what? Again with the lyrics ‘In a word I’m out of my mind so far I’m alive’ like she has to go crazy working on music to really live. In the ending scene there is another recurring theme since Maria, the snake, another symbol of rebirth, transformation. Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. Of course that scene is hinting to another mv she will release for another track from Guilty Pleasure album. Hwasa co-wrote and co-composed 2 out of 3 tracks and this is the first time she teams up with non-Korean music producers.

Im a B is a continuation of Maria, its a metaphor as if she was born again when she came out of the box, shes still wearing the same dress that she wore in Maria in the last scene with Mamamoo. That she needs to be a bitch and strong for her to be able to survive in the industry.

Bless U will always be my favorite Hwasa song. There I said it! That, along with In The Fall which I'm pretty sure you haven't heard yet which is a crime. It was released in 2019, and is a beautiful ballad which shows off her beautiful runs and head voice which is just angelic. Like you said, all of Mamamoo are powerhouses, but I believe Hwasa and Wheein have the prettiest head voices. That's just me.

Hwasa made a behind the scenes/interview video about her making of the album. She talks about how this album was a struggle for her. She couldn't seem to be able to get words out and there was a period where the songwriting process got very difficult because things just weren't sounding right. So at some point she got very frustrated and eventually realized that she had been taking her frustration out on her cowriter/producers. She initially felt bad about it, but then came to the conclusion that in that moment, it was how she needed to be to stay sane through the process. So she called it her guilty pleasure- be a b to her friends in order to get what she wanted out the album.

First of all thank you for the reaction (as always) !! Guilty pleasure was a rushed album, Hwasa after Maria got a big success so she was worried about realising something that would not have met the fan’s expectations (which is crazy as all of her releases are so good), she was also badly influenced by the pandemic situation… the agency didn’t help her at all, they rushed the release of the mini album and made it released in a bad period and with a short promotion (just 3days).. after guilty pleasure she didn’t release any official solo songs (just collaborations) under that agency.. now she’s preparing for her full album, she’s actually been doing it for a long time but we know she’s a perfectionist 🌟

As leggosss said, I'm a Bitch (her intended title for the song) picks up where Maria left off. It seems to be an alternate ending where she committed suicide in Maria and is reincarnated wearing the dress from the final scene via a groaner of a visual pun where she's reborn from a box. It says Moo Moo on her nail, as you probably figured out by now. I also felt Guilty Pleasure was rushed and incomplete and that's probably why you wished the songs were longer. There are some great moments but it feels unfinished, esp in comparison to the Maria album. Sometime after Guilty Pleasure Park Woosang left RBW and I think the loss of her main songwriting partner is probably one of the reasons she didn't record another album under RBW.

Ahhh okay thanks yeah if RBW really rushed this album out the door it makes a lot of sense that she would consider that a big strike against re-signing with the agency. I do wish it was given more time to polish it because all of this album has such potential, but felt short 😊

@@SylverReacts Not only did they rush the project, they didn't package the album in the way that Hwasa has signed off on. She is extremely hands on with her work and she specifically designed every detail of what she wanted the album to look like, what extras went with it (like how the photo cards and stuff were styled). But it ended up being very different. She actually found out while walking Moonbyul through her album when she was on Studio Moon Night to promote it. She would tell Moon to look for a particular item and then she'd continue to find out that it was different or not even in the package. You could tell she was really deflated by it. During the unboxing the staff actually got a statement from the production team who gave some bs answer about whey they changed it. My guess is that it was really about production costs, what she wanted was a bit more elaborate than what they would normally put together for an album. Hwasa tried to play it off as if it was her mistake for misunderstanding what the final product would be, but you could tell took it very personally and just didn't want to start drama live on Moon's platform. I love RBW for so many things, but when it comes to marketing their talent properly, they just miss the mark. Their artists deserve better in that regard. And since her art and her concepts are so important to her, I'm really not surprised Hwasa left. At the end of the day, they just didn't respect her artistry enough.

I agree with you about FOMO. I think this song should have been 2 separate songs. Both are AMAZING! (But my favorite of the 2 is the first part, I truly would have loved if that was a full song by itself!) But just when you are really getting into the first part of the song it gets, cut off by the transition to the next song. It really could have been handled better. Hwa Sa didn't have anything to do with the writing, or producing of this track, and it shows. But she loves PWS (Logos), and if he asks her to sing one of his songs, she will do it. and her singing was spectacular, and that isn't the issue with the song, it's the production, which is don't usually have an issue with.

Right?! I loved both parts of Fomo, but it felt like an incomplete thought, it was a little frustrating. I love PWS and all of his work, but this one felt a little off, a little off for Hwasa is still a damn good track, but still.
