MAME's 68040 timings are too pessimistic so they're running slower than they should. That said, those Mac Doom engine ports were famously not well optimized in the first place so they're not super smooth on hardware either.

Very cool. Would you ever be willing to do tutorial videos on how to source the games, and how to use MAME to run these? Asking since it's such an obscure thing without too much videos on this topic, and you seem to know what to do imo
@AldenfenrisАй бұрын
Unfortunately, you can't post direct help on how to get the "games" that is what googling/web searching and reddits/forums are for, but videos for how to set it up seem fair game.
@samuelbanyaАй бұрын
@@Aldenfenris I don't mind retro pirating personally. The copyright is usually way out of date, so the opposite argument is kind of dumb. However, it is actually kind of a weird topic because I just don't know where to get these rips. The only things really know are like 2003 MAME sets which are the golden standard. After that, it gets confusing imo.
@AldenfenrisАй бұрын
@@samuelbanya the issue is "I don't mind" is not the issue here man, it's illegal. You will have to Google or your web search of choice to find the info you need. Giving links and actual explanations will just put people in trouble. That's why so many forums and such have a "do not mention roms or where to get them" rules. Mind you u agree it would be nice to talk directly, share info and websites or whatnot.

on one hand there are people complaining about the lack of arcade progress, then when we do provide arcade progress, such as with these, there seem to be complaints about that too. If you've walked into any arcade, outside of the niche ones specifically buying up old games and running them on freeplay, you'll have seen that the majority of those locations are now full of this kind of thing too.
@nate567987Ай бұрын
@@mamehaze yea they are not too many things left that can be done in arcade
@mamehazeАй бұрын
@@nate567987 there are plenty, the majority of drivers could do with rewriting to be more accurate if we're honest; they're nowhere near the level of standalone emulators for other platforms because deep research has never been done on the PCBs. The problem is the majority of what can be done for arcades at this point requires *very* specific skills, and unless people with those skills (and enough interest in the platforms to do that work/research) start to contribute, they're not going to move forward. If somebody has been waiting 20 years for an improvement, chances are it's a simple case of nobody with the skills having come forward at this point, so people complaining about it won't change anything. There are also an awful lot more slot machines we'll need to emulate at some point; people seem to forget that those have been the face of arcades for a good 20+ years at this point too, with hundreds put out every year. These IGS ones are a direct result of the techniques developed when emulating Fearless Pinnochio, as they use the same type of CPU.
@DanJackson1977Ай бұрын
At what point did MAME become MESS? Not being snarky, I'm legit asking. I thought the mission statement was specifically to emulate arcade hardware. 🤷♂️ I feel like MAME has gone so far in the weeds with emulating everything BUT arcade hardware that I dont even recognize what it is anymore.
@mamehazeАй бұрын
The first version to demonstrate proof of concept of this functionality was 0.144, released in 2011, about 13 years ago. After a few years that became the form of the official distribution. The project is 26 years old, so it's been that way, in some form, for roughly half the life of the project. The goal is to make sure nothing gets lost to time, and the only way MAME, even as an arcade emulator was to continue at all, was if the greater needs of other systems started to be fully considered rather than treated as second class citizens. Arcades, and arcade tech were a dead end and focusing only on them was resulting in some truly awful code and decisions which were severely hampering the project and our ability to move forward. The hangover from that time can still be seen today, for example, missing waitstates in CPS1 etc. as the prior arcade focused 'dirty and fast' approach is still heavily ingrained in some of those drivers; even if research at the time was carried out it couldn't be implemented, but more often than not the research wasn't even being done. These days, it would be possible, if somebody does it as the need to emulate things like the Atari ST to a high level has resulted in sub-cycle accurate 68000 cores and a memory system that is aware of the need for such things. Had the change to fully incorporate MESS not happened MAME would have probably died entirely about 10 years ago, resulting in no progress anywhere as we were simply digging ourselves into a corner and rather than having a reason to come up with proper solutions, were starting to pile hacks upon hacks instead. There is a stark difference between the quality of any arcade driver from that era and drivers that have seen proper attention and rewrites since then to take advantage of what can be done now.
