I saw the production starring Ginger Rogers, when it ran at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in 1969. I was 16 years old at the time. After the show had finished I waited with around 20 others by the stage door for Ginger Rogers to come out. When she did she came straight up to me and asked where I was from. She asked if I has enjoyed the show, and I replied, very much. She then said "You know, you are very lucky. When I was your age I never saw anything like this. She then smiled, waved, and got in the car that was waiting for her. I still have the souvenir programme she signed for me on the night.

@gregcurtin5311: And the reality is that Ginger Rogers and Lucille Ball we’re both born in 1911. But Rogers led a healthy life and Ball didn’t. Instead of playing “Mame”, Ball should have played “Mother Burnside” which required no singing or line interpretation, just belching AND NO SOFT FOCUS LENS TRYING TO HIDE A WRINKLED PRUNE FACE MAME!

There are two things I love about this (aside from Ginger Rogers). First of course, there is Julia McKenzie who ends up center stage at the end of the number sining the highest high note she is able to. But secondly, notice the really sad dancer standing directly next to Ginger during a lot of this number. His kicks are about half as high as everyone else and he rarely cracks a smile or moves his lips when he's supposed to be singing along with the rest of the chorus. Don't know who that guy is, but he's a whole production by himself!

I agree with your assessment. Ginger Rogers is stunning in this scene. Her smallest movements are lovely and graceful. The words of the song seem appropriate and true, because she does come across as delightful. The male lead seems polished and confident. The rest of the cast...watching them led me to check to see that this was an actual Broadway production. The choral singers and ensemble dancers of my high school production looked and sounded better than this. I have always thought that it would be extremely difficult, to ever be chosen for a choral or dance ensemble part in a Broadway production. I have thought that only top level dancers, supporting actors, and singers would ever be chosen. This video has shattered that illusion. They did not have one performer on that stage who could manage a decent high note. The dancer of your description...he may just be the worst of an amateur ensemble. They were all...awful.
@JM-lw3nx
@JM-lw3nx 3 жыл бұрын
Believe me, that was intentional. First of all it appears he was making room for Ginger's kicks, and not getting in the way or drawing attention away from her. The same is true for his lack of huge expression. You don't upstage a star like Ginger Rogers.

Do you mean that ungodly sound on top that is "sung" straight tone!! OMG! Well, it is exciting to have the tone at least, at the end of this. Who is Julia M? Oh, I saw the guy you mentioned!! OMG!!! You are right! What the hell? I wonder if he was a swing? No, real swings are ready to knock you down to get on that stage; they KNOW the parts!

@josephcollins6033 2 жыл бұрын
@@JM-lw3nx I do get what you say, but having done that as what they used to call a singer/dancer, with many stars, I can tell you that what he is doing actually upstages her. I would never have kicked as high as I could if standing next to her. But, the face!

@@julietalksmoney-2024 You talk money but no sense. Lucille Ball was too old, too brittle in the dance routines, couldn’t sing (couldn’t even croak!), read the lines badly and was filmed in a soft focus in an attempt to hide her age; it didn’t work. BUT she payed $2 million of the budget to get the role. She, and the few who did see the film did not get their monies worth. You know of film, art or common sense; keep talking money.

A unique opportunity to see the original Broadway staging and the original choreographer, Onna White, recreate her work for this London airing. The first Broadway Mame, Angela Lansbury had limited dance experience unlike Ginger Rogers. This choreography, which was based upon Lansbury's comfort zone, may not be a lively as one would expect, but, this number stopped the show. Rogers, who obviously had a lot of dance experience, early in her career, probably could have handled more, (the bulk of her movies were non musical). However, London productions of Broadway shows usually reflected the New York production stagings etc. Rogers clearly is vividly upbeat, with her smile and keeping her face out there for her audience in the theatre and for the camera, she loves that camera, this is obvious.....but then she was a huge Hollywood movie star and it shows in her eyes and her being. This quality, makes everyone else in the cast seem a little 'less'...but then this show was written to be played by a star.

Well stated. I read once or twice over the years that they added a bit more dance to "Hello, Dolly!" on Broadway when Ginger Rogers was in it because she was the first replacement and also well, cuz she was Ginger Rogers! I wished there was a bit more in this number but Mame's best dancing comes in Act 2 in "That's How Young I feel." I agree 100% that Ms. Rogers is selling it to the back of the house (and the camera) in a wonderful way. She did after all, start her career on Broadway. Interesting that 1930 "Girl Crazy" cast mate was also Dolly on Broadway.
@alivis1999

Yes, they edited out the part with the male chorus that started..."Well shut my mouth and freeze my face..".etc.but this is a good recreation of the original choreography. I saw this show several times as a teenager back in the late sixties. At that time Jane Morgan was starring. I also saw Ann Miller a couple of times. I would memorize the choreography and try to recreate it at home as I played the cast recording. Those were the days.

There is one scene where I feel Lucy excels in that movie. "We Need a Little Christmas"... before the number gets creepy, there is a point where she has such a pathos as she sings, "For I've grown a little leaner , Grown a little colder, Grown a little sadder, Grown a little older..." I don't think anyone I have heard has equaled her acting-wise while doing that part of the song.

I always think it odd that no one comments on the references to the Confederacy in this song. I'm not that PC, but this always bothered me. The South will rise again to do what?

At this time Julia McKenzie was being a little mischievous as when she was a member of the chorus I always looked out for her as she was always singing higher than any of the others. No wonder she got where she is.

Is that Julia McKenzie standing right behind Ginger Rogers at the close? Singing that impossibly high, high note? She really makes herself heard!

@@brianobrien7983 Julia Mackenzie is the second from the left when the camera initially pans ( Stage right ) or from the front looking at it left. I could not see clearly whether she was behind Ginger Rogers at the end. Sorry for tardiness in responding.

Yeah, her voice is too powerful for the chorus. Love her as Sally in Follies.

They should have used Ginger in film Mame Instead of Lucille Ball Or Angela Landsbury

Ginger could dance and high kicks. Lucille ruined Movie Mame she should never been cast but She I heard had financial interest in film. Either Angela or Ginger would have been tremendously better. Bea Arthur as Vera Charles didn't care for Lucille in Mame

When/why was this taped? When I saw it pop up, I figured it would be a typical grainy vid of some 70s show. But the quality is strong and fresh. It seems to be just one number put on from the show, but I wish they'd taped the whole thing like this. I'd love to see Ginger do the whole show like thsi!!

I believe this was a BBC command performance for Queen Elizabeth. It consisted of various acts so this would be the only scene from Mame in it. Done in 1969 or 1970.

I mean it's second tier stuff ... not terrible, but nothing for the ages. It was passé even when it was new. This piece, so clearly manufactured to be a 'showstopper' is just a snoozefest.
