Bought one while in college in 2012, paid 1000 bucks. Wish I would've gotten a few more bodies and lenses considering how insane the prices have gotten.

I appreciate your time and effort to make this video. In the future a quick minute to look up the owners manual will aide you in the operation of your equipment, such as ISO adjustment. I've seen many KZbin channels with a "good vibe" die a quick death. Skill, preperation and solid knowledge will see you through in the long run. Chill lo fi beats and f1.8 focus pulls only get you so far around here, I say all this because I like you guys and what your doing. Keep up the good work!

Nice critique. Do my channel next! lol But seriously, I hear what you're saying, but what I enjoy about analog photography is not limited to the hands on experience: I personally enjoy the exploration of trying new things and figuring things out without relying on google. Instead I enjoy asking people in the community something when I have a question. So I guess what I'm saying is that its ok for someone to make a video about their personal experience using a camera without the help of a manual if its about that personal experience. Yeah, he could have looked things up in the manual or done a google search, but so can the viewer.

@@MikMilman Understood, however my point was that trying something that hasn't been done before is extremely valuable but simple mistakes that are basic knowledge (ISO adjustment) are amateur hour mistakes. My critique came from my hope of seeing more "advanced" level techniques from you tubers because this place is awash with "tips for begginers" etc. etc. videos and after you've shot a few hundred rolls of film you realize that there isn't much content in aimed at the more mid and upper level photographers, more product pushers and click baiters. All the best, Metrik

@@metrik2148 Well, I can give you my theory why; most KZbinrs get their information from KZbin. So you have a vicious cycle of derivatives. Another problem is that KZbinrs need to make searchable videos. The videos I make about the philosophical side of photography falls into a black hole.

Great video! I've owned a Mamiya 7II for a couple of years now and it's exactly the camera I was looking for. I wanted a medium format, 6x7 camera that was not too big and something that I would take around. I shoot mostly landscape photographs and I prefer to shoot handheld. This camera is perfect for that! Lenses are super sharp and the camera just feels so good in your hands. I sold my Pentax 67 for this camera. Loved the Pentax but I wouldn't take it out because it was too cumbersome and heavy.

The 'dark slide' (light shield curtain) is supposed to be used in the event of a lens change. That is all. The shutter speed should not be tight. Push the button in the centre down firmly and the ring will move easily. FYI, both Martin Parr and David Bailey are users.

I couldn't justify the cost of the 7 and 7ii so I ended up with the Mamiya 6, the whole family is just fantastic. The glass is just so sharp and renders so nicely and the portability of it all is worth the money. Shooting in low light is super easy with it too, no lens to look through so its always bright in the VF, no mirror slap and you can take useable pictures even down to 1/4th of a second pretty easily with practice. The one aggravating thing on the Mamiya 6/7's that took a while for to get used to (and no one really mentions it) is that at infinity you only have 83% coverage in the framelines. So the lenses widen out dramatically when you focus to infinity but it is 100% at MFD. oh and that dark slide is for when you change lenses

Please let me know if you ever shot ISO 3200 b&w 120 film, how the images turned out. On a medium format film, iso 3200 puts out smooth grain noise images which is good when shooting a model indoors with some not alot, natural light penetrate through the scene.

I loved the Mamiya 7, but do find that the expensive price of entry makes it hard to expand lens selection. And the general end of 220 film doesn't lend itself to longer shoots. It was definitely harder to get closer, but when it worked, it was stunning. I just sold my Leica because I just didn't want to keep putting up the money for lenses. This camera and the Leica did help me appreciate rangefinders quite a bit, though.

Good review, good pictures - a bit like William Eggleston. A bit surprised that a Leica M shooter didnt like the Mamiya, but Im glad to hear the honest critique.

I totally agree with your comments about the camera. The Leica is best suited for documentary and hence this Mamiya would be redundant. The 67ii is best for portraits but comes with a hefty cumbersome weight disadvantage.
@fangxusun17235 жыл бұрын
if mamiya 7 is redundant, then the price of it will drop. However that is just not the case and it has become the most sought after camera out there. market always tells the truth.
@vangstr5 жыл бұрын
fangxu sun sorry to bust your bubbles but hype drives inflated prices. Redundancy does not drive prices. I merely stated redundancy due to the fact that the gentleman in this video stated he already owns a Leica rangefinder. Leica vs Mamiya 7 have their pro’s and con’s against each other but if one chooses size and discreetness Leica has a slight edge. Both are meant for reportage work in the field and have their strengths but adding a Mamiya when one already owns a Leica is why I stated the reason for redundancy.

And you mention that prefer your Pentax 67 over the Mamiya because you can get closer to your subjects, what is it about the Mamiya that makes that not possible?
@significantpass5 жыл бұрын
xesse1 the Pentax is an SLR while the Mamiya is a rangefinder, so with the Mamiya what you see in the viewfinder is not coming through the lens, unlike in the Pentax. As you get closer to an object, the parallax error of looking through the viewfinder rather than the lens increases, making composition more difficult.
@zguy951355 жыл бұрын
The framelines automatically adjust for parallax, it's very accurate at minimum focus distance. The closest you can get is 3.5ft though so a chest up portrait is about it, there's a closeup adapter but I wouldn't use it for portraits.

Hey Ho, I also have a Mamiya 7II but very often I have a problem while shooting. Sometimes I have a problem with the film advance lever. Very irregularly after making an image I want to wind to the next picture, but the film advance lever doenst move. The image is done, but I cant wind to the next image. Till now I do not have found a solution. I tried to rub the contacts, changed the battery but nothing could really solve the problem. I also do not know how to make the lever move. Sometimes its enough to just switch the camera on and off. Sometimes i close and open the curtain or change the exposure time after setting it to manual mode. Do you also have had a problem like this and know how to solve it? I would really appreciate andy feedback. Stay healthy so far. Greetings from Berlin
