Greetings from Christchurch (small world) and thank you @MamlamboFossils for an enlightening video. I came across this purely by chance & am glad that I took the time to expand my horizons. Your "hobby" looks fascinating & sometime soon I will come out to Waikuku to visit. Edit: I even found the Seven Sharp segment ... great stuff =)

It always amazes me that you can spot fossil-bearing rocks among the heaps of non-fossiliferous rocks. What an eye! Congratulations on your ten minute talk about the fossil turtle shell. It will get easier. My experience was that though I still was very anxious before, after a few minutes at the start of the talk, I was fine. I never memorized my presentations - that would give a lifeless result - except for the first few sentences and any particularly complicated sentences I had to get right. If I primed the pump this way, I could sail through the rest.
@MamlamboFossilsКүн бұрын
That's pretty much my approach to talks as well 😀

Hi, I'm blown away how gigantic the albatros are! I work with storks but your albatros are way bigger than our storks! Incredible.

I was just thinking that! They really are insanely large!

Nice video dude! Congrats on getting accepted to present your turtle skull :) I reckon those first two agates are gizzard stones. You can see the bigger one later on is hardly worn since it's harder than almost anything else on the beach, whereas the super round ones would indicate prolonged friction on similar hardness materials :)
@MamlamboFossilsКүн бұрын
That would be awesome if they are gizzard stones!

Turtle shell gets easy to identify in cross section when you've seen a few. It has 'diploe' structure like a human cranium, with compact cortex and a spongy middle layer.

Those tiny crab fossils are adorable, Morne! I wish I could find crabs this side of the ditch, but no luck in several years of hunting. I'll find one someday though, I'm sure. Take care and have a lovely Christmas.

Caution in interpreting rocks based on position only..at times the upper layers will erode away and lower layers exposed and/or be thrust over younger rock.

GSNZ - "come give a presentation, bring your fossils, and no you can't have the footage". 🤨This sort of stuff really irks me - did they pay for anything like travel costs or for presenting? If not I consider that quite bad form. It's one thing if it's a membership organization and they struggle for funds, but they also shouldn't hold that over individuals if they're doing it for free in regards to individual presentations. This is probably the largest publicity exposure for the society all year - if it were me I'd be begging you to post the footage. Sometimes these societies get too caught up in worrying about bureaucracy, and miss the forest for the trees.
@MamlamboFossilsКүн бұрын
It's not that I couldn't have the footage, there just wasn't any taken :) 100s of people presented, I was a very, very small part and I approached them for it
