i genuinely can’t watch the Slipping Through My Fingers scene without sobbing like a baby - I’ve never seen such a wholesome, melancholy portrayal of a mother and a daughter on screen, and it’s so beautiful. Thanks so much for this video!

I agree, I'm totally fine with the fact that Pierce Brosnan isn't a very good singer, so long as he's on key, 'cause if anything it makes you feel less intimidated to sing along too if you're not a great singer either.

As a Greek living in Greece, thank you for that criticism! I love this movie, I understand it's made from the "foreigner's POV" but I think that if we start taking notice and changing all the things that have been co-opted without the locals' input, it would be great. Greece is not however a foreigner who just loves mythology or stories about Ancient Greece or even a tourist pictures it, it's not Zorbas (in 2022) and the Greek language exists, it's spoken everyday. Anyway, regardless, I love this movie, thank you for that video!

My boyfriend never wanted to watch Mamma Mia, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde and The Devil Wears Prada because he said those were girls movies. Guess what I made him watch and what he liked. Hint: He liked all of these movies. What would all the male critics say to that? Not that I care... but who would've thought that fun movies aren't just for the girls and gays 🤭 (Also my household owned Mamma Mia as soon as it came out on DVD)

@@lovelove-55s I mean, even then I could see someone dismissing Mama Mia (haven't seen the other one) as more low brow but fully harmless comfort films... But _Devil Wears Prada??_ That movie is a legitimate masterpiece of structure (the film as a whole and the protagonist's arc in particular are _so_ well crafted) and villainous characterization (in the case of Miranda)

My mother and I have owned 3 of the DVD's, and my grandmother has her own. This and Jennifer's Body are two of the most pivotal films in modern feminism. It showed young girls how dogmatic the ideals of masculinity being superior were, and are, entirely toxic and make them feel horrible about themselves. And then these two films gave us all the opportunity to look back with hindsight and explore how we have grown and can continue to push for a more free femininity- not an exclusive adjective for high-fem presenting women within a specific body type and sex appeal, but one that welcomes emotional maturity and a desire to cultivate growth in everything around us. There is no comfort in exclusivity, it breeds anxiety and unsuredness in one's own position in society while inviting everyone to explore femininity creates space for us all to support eachother. Okay, I'll hop off my soap box now.

Id also say teeth is a powerful film with jennifers body. I feel like alot of people never watched and it never really gained traction, but i found it better for the female image and power than jennifers body. It focuses on the predatory nature men have on young women. In the end theres alot of ways to interpet how the movie wraps up, but i found the main characters choice to maintain her power as she does as a way to cope with all the sexual assault she experienced. Crazy movie. Even though megan fox was so hot, and the gay kiss between her and dakota fanning still haunts my dreams. Uhhg to be a baby gay again.

My relationship with my mom was very rocky growing up. But if there was one thing we always had together was sitting together with my sisters and watching movies like mama mia and mean girls, chick flicks, and movies/tv shows. These movies she showed us have shaped who I am today. These movies are so important no matter how “vapid” they may seem to male critics. It’s a chance for female bonding when maybe there wouldn’t be anything to initially bond over. And yes, we had mama mia on dvd!

I fell in love with Amanda Seyfried as an actress through her incredible turn in Big Love, and "followed" her to both Jennifer's Body and Mamma Mia! I'm so glad I did. How much I love both those movies knocked all the misogyny I carried against "chick flicks" right out of me.

It's the ultimate feel-good movie for me. I remember when I saw this movie at the cinema when it came out. It had already been out for two weeks in my small Norwegian hometown, but still there was a really long line going all the way outside of the cinema of people waiting to watch it. During the movie, the crowd was singing along, laughing, and clapping anytime something funny happened, it was a great experience, and not really something I've ever experienced in my small hometown before, but everyone is so familiar with Abba and knows all the songs, at least that's how it is here in Norway, so it's something pretty much anyone can sing along to. It was mostly women, but the few husbands and boyfriends who had been dragged along were all smiling from ear to ear by the end of it too. My old dad who watches pretty much nothing but science fiction and action movies really enjoyed the movie too.

Why can’t these other men just enjoy things?

I remember seeing mama mia in theater with my mom when I was 10, and just thinking about how much Donna and her friends reminded me of how my mom and my aunts act when they would have their twice a year get together. It was an immediate warm nostalgia fest for me even at the first watch when I was so young. Even watching these few clips from the film with Donna's gang makes me miss those summers of sitting in the backyard while my aunts and mom were laughing away, losing their shit just from sitting in the sun, chatting, and drinking coronas together P.s- my family did indeed have the mama mia dvd AND my sister got me the cd for my birthday the year it came out. I still prefer some of the mama mia versions of abba songs because of this

Fantastic video!! I love Mamma Mia and I was baffled that in 2008, it managed to present a movie where women were sexy but not objectified, masculinity was teased and deconstructed, older women were desirable and had desires, and any form of the usual film conventions were tossed out the window for the sake of fun. I'd be curious to hear yours (or anybody else's) thoughts on the sequel and what shifts could be noted as a result of having a man in the director's chair/in several other leading roles. In my opinion it manages to maintain the spirit of the original pretty firmly but I haven't watched it in a sec. I could definitely think of a few pieces that could be scrutinized through a feminist lens though.

i went to see mamma mia with my parents to a fancy cinema festival in a park my city held when i was like, eight. convinced it changed the way my brain was wired forever, along with my parent's; we owned the cd soundtrack and we put it on every roadtrip until it got messed up from use a few years ago, and then we added the whole thing to the family's roadtrip playlist on spotify. screaming the last chorus of the winner takes it all at high velocity down a highway is a tradition for us, i still cry with my mom to slipping through my fingers. we mostly don't speak english, yet we have the whole thing memorized! we watch the movie every couple of years and think to ourselves that its truly one of the best movies ever made, it's one of my most fond memories of my life and im so thankful for it

Mamma Mia was released a year after I was born. I went through two DVDs because I scratched the first one so much from watching it constantly, Mamma Mia made me realize the joys of celebrating womanhood but also how women in film are neglected for the reasons you gave. I still watch it to this day and live by the soundtrack and love the campiness of the first film and it’s 2000s tones. (Unpopular opinion, I love Sam’s singing in SOS. He may not sound like a classic singer but he’s not bad and I actually enjoy his singing).

A few months back I had the absolute privilege of being present when my mum's boyfriend watched Mamma Mia for the first time. We were on a cabin trip and decided to watch a movie and whilst scrolling through netflix my sister, my mum and I all instantly agreed we needed to watch Mamma Mia, at which point my mother's boyfriend confessed to not having seen it. Now my family is a mamma mia household, ofc we owned the dvd, I saw it live for the first time when I was 8, and the second time when I was 15 with my then 9 year old sister and our mum- the men in our family: my brother and father, have the utmost respect for Mamma Mia and will watch it whenever it is on (I once walked in on my dad watching it on his own after the divorce). So we couldn't believe my mum's boyfriend had never watched it. He has 4 20-something daughters, but he has just never gotten around to it he said. But he was very happy to watch it with us and we did. What followed was one of the funniest nights ever as us girls sang every song with passion whilst he tried his best to keep up and sing along. He loved it!

My sister and I last visited our home state of Maryland without our parents (which was extra nice since they were abusive) when I was 15. We stayed with our childhood friends, also sisters, whose mom was like a second mom to us. They had the sing along edition on dvd. We watched it every single day, all five of us ladies singing along to each word, dancing around the crowded living room, then singing and dancing along to the songs happily stuck in our heads at the beach. Those memories are some of those I hold most dear, it was the happiest and most free I had felt in a while. This movie… I can’t explain enough the joy it brought a broken young woman.

What’s hilarious is that I’ve never been a huge fan of Mamma Mia but my brother (who is straight) used to turn it on and watch it with my mom all the time. I like the second one better but I think maybe it’s because I consider the first one to be one of the worst theater experiences I’ve ever had. There was a woman I was sat next to who was like, “I’ve seen this 8 times!” And would be like, “Oh! This part is so funny!” And spoil things before they happened.

Despite being a gay 2000s kid we didn't have a dvd of this and I never watched until I was an adult, but I love it so much! I love ABBA songs and the movie is just so much fun, it can't help but cheer you up. It's amazing how great a lot of the actors are at singing, but like you said I don't think it takes away from the movie when they're not. It makes them feel genuine and you're meant to sing along with abandon if you're watching it at home even if you're a bad singer just like they do. I love what you said about the Does Your Mother Know scene too because it's probably my favorite scene in the movie and the song is so much more enjoyable in this context. It's a perfect example of the celebration of middle aged women as vivacious and desirable in this movie.

In like, 2009, my best friend at that time brought the DVD to a sleepover, super excited to show me her favourite movie. We are about 12 or 13 around that time. I have that fond memory of watching it with her, tho I didn't understand a lot of it, growing up in a Christian household, and a lot of stuff flew over my head, like Harry being gay. Many years later, I rewatch the movie with my partner occasionally because it's a feel good movie! I feel like a lot of queer people like it too, not just because it's a musical. Also because it's heartfelt and a little camp and joyous and (somewhat) diverse.

18:46 this kinda shows what I dislike about alot of men. they see anything that women can enjoy, and just absolutely trash on it. I'm tired of men thinking something is garbage for not appealing to them. alot of the more male-targeted movies don't interest me, yet I don't go calling them "worse than torture" because they were made for men. It makes me feel bad for the wives of those reviewers.

Great video! The humour in this one was especially pleasing 👍 I never noticed how turning ABBA songs into duets eliminated the misogynistic tone, or Brosnan’s subpar singing actually worked for his character. Thank you for making me appreciate Mamma Mia! more. I miss “chick flicks.” The female-led blockbusters that basically just substitute male heroes with an actress miss the point.

I remember watching mama Mia when it came out and I didn't enjoy it but that was in my peak internalized misogyny days, you've inspired me to give this a re-watch

I went to the midnight release of Mamma Mia, back when that was a thing. It was the same night as some big movie, I think the Dark Knight, and my sister and I were there for Mamma Mia with like 5 other people lol.

mamma mia has everything that I like - it's a musical with abba music (which is one of my fav bands), features really great actors perfect for their roles, has so much joy and pure fun, of course things like costumes, location etc and my favourite scene that was one of my bisexual awakenings (lay on your love one me) and the same for the mamma mia: here we go again - I love both these movies with my whole heart

according to my family this was my absolute favorite movie as a small child - everyone in my live loves this movie and I never would have thought that there was such animosity towards it. havent watched it in a while but from what i remember it is a genuinely good movie! I must underestimate sexism in the film industry

We owned the movie on DVD and had a lot of fun with it. I'll admit that I haven't actually seen the movie in years though, so I bet a lot of jokes went over my head. Even more of a reason to rewatch it soon :D
